Buses are newly classified into arterial bus, local bus, downtown circular bus, and inter-city express bus. Trunk Bus (Blue): These buses operate at higher speeds and access the median bus lane connecting suburban areas to downtown Seoul. The city government is partly in charge of its operation. The blue color represents Seoul's skyline and Hangang (River) to symbolize security and freedom. Branch Bus (Green): Green buses are flexibly operated by private bus companies, to connect major subway stations or bus terminals outside downtown Seoul. Green stands for the mountains surrounding the city. Rapid Bus (Red): The red buses are express buses designed specially for those commuting between downtown Seoul and the metropolitan area. The color red exudes energy of speed. 8

Circulation Bus (Yellow): These buses circle downtown Seoul and stop at stations for blue buses and major railway stations, as well as business, tourist and shopping areas. Yellow was selected for its dynamic and friendly image. Operating Hours: Buses operate from 5:00 a.m. 2:00 a.m. Cost: Fares cost between 700 1,800 won, depending on type of bus and distance travelled Car Rental Rental cars are available for those visitors who choose to drive in Korea. Cars are driven on the right side of the road and most road signs are written in Korean and English. Chauffeur services are available with the rental car. Be prepared to pay the driver's meals and hotel expenses as well. Subway The Seoul Metropolitan Subway, located primarily in Seoul, is the world's most extensive subway system by length, the world's second largest subway by number of stations, and the world's second most highly used subway. It consists of 18 lines operated by Seoul Metro, Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit, Korail, Incheon Transit and private rapid transit operators. The system serves Seoul and nearby Incheon metropolis and satellite cities in Gyeonggi Province along with major cities in northern South Chungcheong Province and western Gangwon Province that lie over 100 km away from the capital. Tickets can be purchased at all stations. Operating hours: The subway operates from around 5:00 a.m. to midnight, depending on the route. Average charge: The fares range from 1,050 1,750 won depending on the route and distance. Taxis There are three kinds of taxis general taxis, deluxe taxis, and call taxis. The last two types of taxis offer a high standard of service compared to the first, but are more expensive than the first. You cannot always expect that a taxi driver is fluent in English, so it is advisable to tell the landmarks (many major hotels and attracts) near the destination. Vacant taxis have indicator lamps on, in front of assistant driver seat and on the roof. General Taxis The basic fare is 2,400 won for the first 2 km and 100 won for each additional 144 m. If the taxi is going less than 15km per hour due to traffic congestion, an additional charge of 100 won per each 35 seconds is added to the basic fare. Extra 20 percent is added to the fare between midnight and 4:00 a.m. Deluxe Taxis Deluxe taxis, called 'mobeom' taxis in Korean, are black with a yellow sign on the top. The fare is 4,500 won for the first 3 km and 200 won for each additional 164 m or 39 seconds if the speed drops below 15 km per hour. There is no late-night surcharge. Car phones are available and 9

receipts are given. Deluxe taxi stands are located at hotels, bus and subway stations, bus terminals, and on major city streets. Staff at the hotel will be able to provide assistance in calling a taxi should that be necessary. Train The train service in Korea is provided and operated by the Korean National Railroad (KORAIL). It is a fast, safe and reliable service with very reasonable prices. Trains are operated by strict schedules. The Super-Express Saemaeul-ho, Express Mugunghwa-ho, and Limited Express Tongil-ho trains operate on routes that literally cover the country. Tickets can be purchased at all train stations, selected tourist centers and the KNTC Tourist Information Center. Tickets can be purchased up to 3 months in advance, and it is very strongly recommended to purchase tickets in advance if planning to travel during holidays or peak seasons. Attractions Amsa-Dong Prehistoric Settlement Site The Amsa-Dong Prehistoric Settlement located in Gangdong-Gu is built on a location where a number of Neolithic remains were found. Pottery, tools, and other implements have been excavated from the Prehistoric sight where stone-age inhabitants dwelled in pits. A total of eight pit houses and a storage room have been excavated and restored to recreate conditions as they might have been 5,000 years ago. This site offers a fascinating glimpse back into Korea's prehistoric past. Changdeok Palace Changdeok Palace was built during the 5th year of the reign of King Taejong (1405) as a royal villa. It was later used as royal residence when Gyeongbok Palace was burnt down during the Japanese invasion in 1592. Since the site of the Palace is not level, the layout of the buildings is designed in such a way that architectural forms adapt to the changing natural terrain. In particular, the back garden, along with numerous pavilions, tens of thousands of trees and flowering plants attest to the Korean design tradition that harmonises the structure with its natural surroundings. Children's Grand Park The Children's Grand Park is composed of a zoo, Anistory (an animal show), botanical garden, amusement park, play grounds, swimming pool, outdoor performance halls and sports grounds for playing soccer and basketball. It is one of the largest parks located in an urban area holding about 50,000 visitors at a time. Children's Grand Park also provides many free performances, especially during spring time to celebrate the Spring Flower Festival. Dongdaemun Market Ever since its opening in 1905, Dongdaemun Market has been one of the major markets in Korea. Specialising in wholesale clothing, the market has grown large, having more than 20 shopping malls. A full range of fashion items that cover from head to toe, are found in Dongdaemun Market at inexpensive prices. Gyeongbok Palace Gyeongbok Palace was built in 1395, the fourth year of the reign of King Taejo. The palace, named 'Gyeongbok' or 'shining happiness' was built as a tribute to the permanent happiness and prosperity of Korea's kings, their children and the people of the nation. It was burnt down during the Japanese 10

invasion of 1592, and was left in ruins until being rebuilt in 1865, during the 2nd year of the reign of Prince Regent Daewongun. Many of the buildings at the palace were demolished during the Japanese colonial period. However, in the 1990s, the government launched restoration of the palace, and it has now been restored to its original state. On the site stand Geunjeongjeon, Gyeonghoeru, Hyangwonjeong, and Amisan Chimney, all in their original states. Insa-dong Shopping Area Insa-dong is a well-known street near central Seoul, lined with antique stores, art galleries, traditional teahouses, restaurants and book stores. Known for its vast collection of antiques and especially Joseon chests, it is a place that beckons casual shoppers and serious collectors as well. Itaewon Itaewon Street and adjoining alleys run for a mile or so, lined with boutiques, sidewalk stalls, tailors and souvenir shops, antique stores and art outlets. It is an extremely popular district for shopping and entertainment. There are many Western fast food restaurants, as well as pubs and discotheques that offer a hopping nightlife with jazz, country music or pop. Jeongdong Theatre This small concert hall near City Hall with a 400-seat capacity has deep symbolic and cultural value in that it was the first modern theatre in Korea, originally the Won-gaksa Theater when it was built in 1908. The theatre provides the cultural space to experience both traditional and modern performances by Korea's finest artists. In particular, "Korean Traditional Stage", which provides authentic renditions of a variety of musical performances that stretch far back into the roots of Korean tradition. Namdaemun Namdaemun Market is the best-known traditional marketplace. It plays a vital role in determining the economic flow and consumer prices in Seoul, dealing with all kinds of merchandise, ranging from everyday necessities such as clothes, miscellaneous goods, kitchen utensils, stationary, flowers, accessories, food, agricultural and marine products to articles of folk art and imported goods. Most shops have their own factories and make the products themselves offering both wholesale and retail prices. National Museum of Korea This international-standard museum maintains 18 permanent exhibitions displaying its collection of almost 5,000 artifacts and is equipped with video-viewing rooms and audio and video guide systems. The museum is due to relocate to its new premises within Yongsan Family Park, and is offering expanded capacity to meet larger exhibition needs. Moreover, the new facility will be a versatile and multipurpose cultural space equipped to take on research and public education in traditional culture and to serve as a platform of international exchange. Sejong Cultural Centre Located in the heart of Seoul, this centre ranks among the top ten performing arts centres in the world. It stands six stories high with three basement levels. This cultural center offers a place to enjoy topquality performances at an international level. At night, floodlights illuminate the building, giving it a sense of beauty, romance and mystique. It is a popular venue for symphonies, concerts, operas, ballet, and Korean traditional folk performances. Exhibitions and international conventions are held here, too. 11

Seoul Arts Centre Information Sheet The Seoul Arts Centre is located within Mt. Umyeonsan in Seocho-dong and offers fantastic performances every night. You can enjoy the best international facilities and cultural art programs all year around. The centre is composed up of a concert hall, a calligraphy hall, an art gallery, a library, an opera house and several outdoor areas. The outdoor areas, including the Korea Symbol's Square, hold romantic open stages in the summer. The centre is also famous as a date course for couples since it has so many quiet and beautiful areas. In particular, the Umyeonji is a beautiful outdoor studio for wedding ceremonies. Seoul Historical Museum Seoul Historical Museum is Korea's first museum featuring the history of all aspects of the city including changes in the citizen's living conditions and the development of the urban landscape. The collection of relics and artifacts, mainly dating back to the Joseon Dynasty, were collected with the help of many donors. The permanent exhibition covers the evolution of the city and its inhabitants since 5000 B.C. Seoul Tower Seoul Tower serves as an excellent landmark as it can be seen from almost anywhere in Seoul, Built on a 262 metre peak in Namsan Park, the tower reaches to 480 metres above sea level. The observation tower (370 meters above sea level) allows you to view the entire city and surrounding areas. World Cup Stadium / World Cup Mall The Seoul World Cup Stadium, located in Sangam-dong, western Seoul, was open on December 27, 2001 for the 2002 World Cup Korea/Japan. This is the largest soccer-only pitch in Asia, accommodating 64,677 spectators at once. During the World Cup, the opening ceremony and the opening match took place here. The city government remodeled the stadium by building a variety of facilities for citizens. The stadium was reborn as "World Cup mall", featuring a multi-screen cinema complex, a wedding hall, a sports centre and a discount store, as well as shopping malls. It is a best place providing one-stop services for shopping, sports, entertainment and cultural activities. 12
