The area around Sossusvlei is the most accessible part of the 300-km long and nearly 150-km wide sand sea that covers over 32 000 square km of Western. This expanse of dunes is reputed to contain some of the world s highest and most picturesque dunes. Sossusvlei is a huge ephemeral pan set amid red sand dunes. At any time of year, gemsboks and ostriches may be seen. Although it s hard going, the best way to get a feel for this sea of sand is to climb one of the dunes and have a look around this sandy sprawl, which extends 75 to 150 km in all directions. Dead Vlei Consist of a large stretch of dried, white clay at the base of the majestic dunes, Dead Vlei is one of many such clay pans found here but is perhaps the most beautiful. The skeletal remains of ancient camel-thorn trees appear dotted across the pan adding to the feeling of isolation. Sossusvlei Desert Lodge (&Beyond) in full inclusive 2
DAY 3 : DAMARALAND Departure from the Namib desert and charter flight in a Cessna C210 to Damaraland via Swakopmund (+/- 2h25 fly) Transfer to the lodge Mowani Mountain Camp Mowani Mountain Camp in Full board (drinks excluded) and 1 activity per day: all meals + 1 daily activity MOWANI MOUNTAIN CAMP Luxury lodge of 12 tents. The main building looks like an african village in harmony with the neighbouring rock desert. Mowani is situated in the Damaraland, a territory between the Skeleton Coast and s central plateau has traditionally been known as Damaraland, after the Damara people who make up much of its population. Damaraland forms a hilly transitional zone between the arid Skeleton Coast and the scrubby plateau areas further east. Moving inland from the coast, the terrain gradually rises from the flat terraces and coastal dunes into the foothills. With lots of space and a negligible population, Damaraland has a host of natural attractions, including s highest mountain, Königstein, which rises to 2573m in the Brandberg Massif. Web site: www.mowani.com Breakfast and visit of Twyfelfontein TWYFELFONTEIN Twyfelfontein boasts a large gallery of rock art, one of the most extensive in Africa. Unlike most prehistoric art sites in southern Africa, Twyfelfontein works are not paintings but engravings, which were executed by cutting through the hard patina covering the local sandstone. Most of the work probably dates back to the Early Stone Age, making them at least 6000 years old, and is probably the work of San and Nama people. From colour differentiation and weathering, researchers have identified at least six distinct phases of engravings. Although animal tracks and geometric designs are both represented in the various phases, there are very few human figures. Most of the engravings depict animals. 3
Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain: This mass of perpendicular dolerite pillars is located down the river bed, formed by the intrusion of volcanic rock dolerite about 120 million years ago. The Karoo limestone s which formed the burnt mountain were deposited around 200 million years ago. About 120 million years ago, the same period when Organ Pipes were formed, volcanic lava intruded limestone and caused metamorphism giving the mountain its distinctive color. DAY 4 : DAMARALAND This morning, in a 4x4 open-air vehicule, you will spend 4 to 6 hours searching for the rare desert adapted elephants and the Damaraland fauna Mowani Mountain Camp in Full board (drinks excluded) and 1 activity per day: all meals + 1 daily activity LES ELEPHANTS ET RHINOCEROS DU DESERT DAY 5 & 6 : ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK Departure from Damaraland and charter flight with a Cessna C210 to Etosha National Park and Ongava Lodge (+/- 50min fly) 2 Nights at Ongava Lodge - Fully inclusive: Included: all meals, tea coffee and cakes, Mini bar drinks, standard bar/beverage (excluded premium imported brands and champagne), and Laundry, AM and PM game drives into Etosha national Park or on Ongava Private Game Reserve ONGAVA LODGE 4
The lodge is situated on a private concession of 30000-hectares next to Etosha national park. The activities are 4x4 game drives in Etosha, walks and safaris in the afternoon or in the evening on the private reserve. Etosha National Park is a vast protected area that covers 20,000km² and offers shelter to 114 species of mammal, as well as 340 bird species. The park s name, which means great white place of dry water, is taken from the vast white and greenish-coloured Etosha Pan. However, it is the surrounding woodlands and grasslands that provide habitats for the area s diverse animal and vegetable communities. Etosha Pan is an immense, flat, saline desert covering over 5000km². In good rainfall years, incoming channels feed this vast shallow depression. For a few days each year, Etosha Pan becomes a shallow lagoon teeming with flamingos and white pelicans. The most widespread vegetation in Etosha is the mopane woodland, which fringes the pan. Mopane constitutes about 80% of the park s vegetation and from December to March, the trees wear a pleasant green coat. The animals of Etosha include such protected species as the black-faced impala and black rhinoceros. There are also large populations of more common animals such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, springboks, red hartebeests, blue wildebeests, gemsboks, eland, kudu, roan antelopes, lions and a few cheetahs and leopards. In addition to its large mammals, Etosha has some interesting smaller creatures, including both yellow and slender mongooses, honey badgers and leguaans. Bird life is also profuse.
