TELUS Garden Context A unique combination of proximity, technology, content and operation will result in minimal impact with maximum public benefit The at TELUS Garden is located on the west façade, between the 6th and 8th floors. It is only visible in one direction from both Georgia and Seymour Streets. Unlike other media screens in the city (Canada Place, BC Place, etc.) its orientation towards the Central Business District will ensure minimal impact on residential and hotel uses, while maximizing enhancement of the public realm. A simple and proven technology of back projection onto a retractable screen will provide a glare-free static image or full motion video. At dusk the screen descends, and the façade transforms. At :00pm sharp, the screen ascends and the office tower is back as it was. Content will be mainly cultural and civic, with a small amount of brand recognition for companies within TELUS Garden. Technology Strategy The utilizes a simple proven technology, a series of projectors casting an image on a retractable screen. The screen will be located within the three-storey NW Sky Garden. The image will be back projected from projectors located within the adjacent raised floor assembly. During the day when the is not in use, the screen is retracted up into the ceiling space, but at night, the screen descends and the façade transforms into a theatre of light. There are no plans for sound. Rear projection allows the technology to be housed out of sight inside the building. This allows for better access for maintenance of the equipment. It also allows the light source to be located behind the screen, shielding and tempering the intensity while reducing glare. The energy being used to produce the image will be offset by the photovoltaics on the roof, making this a sustainable initiative. The projectors will be capable of producing a static image, or they can play a high resolution full motion video. The image size can vary depending on the desired output, but it can be no larger than the screen itself. Luminance Impact Measuring Sign Brightness What is a NIT A nit is a unit of measurement for luminance equivalent to one candela per square metre. It is used to measure the brightness of a screen. Why Are LED Screens Brighter LED screens tend to be very bright because of the need to be visible in daylight. A bright blue daytime sky ranges from 000 to 7000 nits in luminance and therefore the LED screen to compensate must be at or near a commensurate level to be clearly visible. How the Differs The is not required to be intensely visible in the daytime and has a much lower light output of only 0 nits. For comparison a static floodlit billboard has a nighttime luminance of less than 0 nits. Content & Operation The is not a Billboard, but rather a Community Canvas Cultural Content 90% of the content on the screen will be commissioned, licensed or donated Cultural content. Existing Media Signs Canada Place Proximity Content Operation Technology The high definition LED video screen/digital billboard at Canada Place faces onto a mainly commercial area but is in close proximity to a number of adjacent hotel suites and the residential upper storeys of the Fairmont Pacific Rim. This presents a number of challenges which require careful operational and content control to ameliorate negative impact. * Please note that since BC Place is under Federal jurisdiction, the City of Vancouver did not approve the Media Sign. Existing Public Art - Light Installation West Pender Place Proximity Content Operation Technology Created by Dutch artist Tamar Frank, this light installation is on the southfacing concrete exterior of the 6 storey Tower. The twenty six foot long horizontal LED strips change colour and pattern according to 0 pre-set computerized patterns.
