GR-3139 British Columbia. Dept. of Lands and Works. Crown land grants Originals 1851-1878 2.46 m (7 boxes) Microfilm (neg.) 1851-1878 16 mm 2 reels [B14435-B14436] Microfilm (neg.) 1851-1878 35 mm 1 reel [B14437] The series consists of Crown land grant records. Crown land grants are issued when land owned by the government is conveyed to private persons and organizations under the authority of the senior official responsible for Crown lands. Records from 1860-1878 have been indexed in the Historic Crown Grants database (access through GATOR http://a100.gov.bc.ca/pub/pls/gator/gator$queryforms.menu). Unlike the records in GR-3097, no volume or grant number is provided, only a reel number. The Crown land grants in this series have been recorded in registers covering particular districts or towns. Those registered after 1869 overlap with a centrally registered series of Crown land grants (1869-1930; see accession GR-3097). Each Crown land grant in this series is documented with a land grant registration form and, in many cases, related records. Most of the forms originally consisted of a and b parts; the latter was given to the grantee, and the former (a long, narrow counterfoil ) was kept by the government. These counterfoil records describe the sale or transfer of specific parcels of Crown land; some also describe the terms and conditions governing these transactions. (Some counterfoils contain very little information.) Registration forms generally document the following: registration number; grantee name; location, acreage, and lot number of the land; and the amount paid. Registration dates are in most cases distinguished on the forms from the dates land was initially acquired; this reflects the fact that purchase of land was generally not finalized for months or years afterwards, when all required improvements had been made. In rare cases, no registration or acquisition date is recorded. Attachments (usually glued to the relevant counterfoil) include sketches of land, applications for Crown grants, receipts, certificates of purchase and title, conveyances recording sale of granted land to other persons, state of title forms, court documents, and related correspondence and other documentation. The records are arranged in seven sub-series, as described below. Unless otherwise noted, within each sub-series the grants are arranged first by district or town, and then by registration number and date. Sub-series 1: Crown land grant records for lands in New Westminster District, including Douglas town, New Westminster City, and Hastings in the form of land conveyances initiated between 1859 and 1870, and granted between 1861 and 1870. This sub-series is an 1884 certified transcript "from the books of the Land Registry Office of Victoria". Sub-series 2: Crown land grant records for suburban and country lots in the districts of Hope, Lytton, New Westminster, and Yale; and for town and suburban lots in the communities of Boston Bar, Cariboo, City of New Westminster, Douglas, Fort Hope, Hope, Langley, Lillooet, Lytton, Seymour, and Yale. The lands were acquired between approximately 1859 and 1869, and granted between 1859 and 1878. Sub-series 3: Crown land grants relating to 1869 Mineral Ordinance, in Nelson, Lytton, and Yale Districts, 1869-1878. G:\RSD\@ORCS09\13050.20\GR-3139.DOC:2018/04/12 page 1

Sub-series 4: Indexed volume of Hudson's Bay Company deeds to lands on Southern Vancouver Island, in Victoria, Esquimalt, Metchosin, Sooke, and Lake land districts. The lands were granted between 1851 and 1858. A modern, typed numerical index exists for these records. Sub-series 5: Three indexed volumes of Colony of Vancouver Island land grants in one continuous registration number series. The lands were all in the districts of Victoria and Esquimalt, and were granted between 1857 and 1859. Sub-series 6: Colony of Vancouver Island certificates of title to lands in Leech River town, Maple Bay townsite, and Newcastle town (Nanaimo district). The lands were granted between 1860 and 1866. Sub-series 7: A Colony of British Columbia return of pre-emption claims in District of Alexandria for quarter ending 21 June 1861. It was originally inserted in the volume containing Sub-series 6, but does not relate to the records in that volume. The series is covered by the BC Lands ORCS (schedule 101687) under classification 10240-20 Crown grant registers. All extant records in the series previously held by Crown Land Registry Services have been transferred to the BC Archives. Series title has been taken from the records classification system. Also known as Crown grant registers. Microfilmed in 2000 by the Genealogical Society of Utah and in 2004 by BC Archives. Subseries 4 (the Hudson s Bay Company deeds) was filmed on 35 mm film due to its large size, and the portions of sub-series 2 and 3 filmed in 2004 were added to that reel. All other documents were filmed in sequence on 16 mm film. (The items microfilmed in 2004 are identified as B14437(2), B14437(3), and B14437(4), and as original volumes 20, 21, and 22.) Some of the loose cancelled or revised duplicate deeds were added to sub-series 4 later and were not filmed. Records were removed from bound volumes when microfilmed, except records in Sub-series 4, which remain in their original bound volume. Some of the volumes were original to the records, while other records in varying formats had been bound together at some point after they were created. In many cases, the bound volumes contained numerous blank forms. For the original bound arrangement of the records, see the Original Bound Volumes List below. Some of the microfilmed attachments (mainly receipts) have some wording obscured due to the fact they could not safely be separated from the counterfoils they are glued to. However, most of the information in this wording is also provided on the counterfoil, and if necessary original documents may be referred to for obscured information. Conservation restriction: use microfilm copy unless it is necessary to see coloured sketch tracings or obscured information on originals. Successor and related series include: GR-3097 Crown land grants (1869-1930) GR-3096 Crown land grant indexes (1869-1930) GR-3140 Crown land auctioneers agreements (1899-1914) GR-1069, Herald Street Collection, miscellaneous crown land grants records (ca. 1858-1910) G:\RSD\@ORCS09\13050.20\GR-3139.DOC:2018/04/12 page 2

In the following file list the file number indicates the placement of the original volume in the relevant box. The item number refers to the number assigned to each volume on the microfilm reel. Note that the volumes are not necessarily arranged in the same order on the microfilm as they are in the boxes. Some of these bindings were original to the records, while other records were bound together after being created; this is evident from the disparate shapes and forms of the documents bound together. All volumes except the one covered by sub-series 4 were dis-bound at the time of microfilming, and are now stored in folders and boxes. Because one volume in many cases contains two or more sections relating to different jurisdictions (each section corresponding to an item in the file list), it is not evident from the file list provided above which records were originally bound together. The following list is provided for this purpose. Note that the volumes are distinguished by the titles used on the original bindings, and by volume numbers reflecting the current order of the volumes (or the records from them). Also note that volumes 20, 21, and 22 were added to the accession after the other volumes had already been numbered, so are not in consecutive order.
