History The Hotel Presidente was established in 1964. The funding owners, Samuel Gudes and Estanislao Scriba originally established themselves as fashion authorities with their high-end boutiques La Dama Elegante & El Caballero Elegante. They decided to branch out and what was originally going to be an apartment building, was changed into a hotel inspired by the visit of President John F. Kennedy to Costa Rica in March, 1963. Since then, the hotel became not only a meeting point for local figures and politicians, but also hosted international artists. As the city evolved, so did the hotel. By 1990 the hotel added, and ownership passed to the heirs of Mr. Gudes, who continued with the management and operation of the hotel. In 2014 the lobby underwent a complete renovation. In 2016 the Hotel Presidente offered its facade for the Urban Art Competition Tu Ciudad, Tu Lienzo. The artista, Sergio Guillén, won with his proposal Buscando el Gato (Searching for the cat). The mural was unveiled in 2017 and has rapidly become a landmark in the city. A favourite spot for locals, Azotea Calle 7, our rooftop bar is located on the 4th floor of the Hotel. Las Américas Room & Breakfast Lounge In 1966, Costa Rican sculptor, Francisco Ulloa decorated our Salón de Las Américas with a beautiful art piece inspired by the one found at the Salón Dorado at the Museo de Arte Costarricense, which used to be the Costa Rica s International Airport. The Salón Dorado was the diplomatic lounge and it is beautifully decorated by low-relief sculptures depicting scenes of important events in Costa Rican history. The mural with which Ulloa honored the recently founded Hotel Presidente was done in a similar technique with stunning results, a wonderful legacy for the past 50 years.
