Next Meeting The next meeting of the Maribyrnong Orchid Society will be held at the Maribyrnong Community Centre, Randall Street, Maribyrnong on Tuesday the 10 th February, 2009. The Early new growers group start at 7.15pm and is conducted by the informative Steve Stebbing. This group runs for approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of the monthly meeting. We also have Pots and Ferts and plants sales tables operating at every meeting. Members may bring 10 orchids to be sold on the sales table each month. The Society deducts 15% commission on the sale of all plants. Please note that all plants must be labeled correctly and state whether they are hot/cold growing and expected floral colour, if not in flower. Plants are also to be listed on a sales form, available from members on the Sales table, to be filled out by the selling member.

18 th AOC CONFERENCE 2009 UPDATE The organization of the Conference and Show are proceeding as to plan. The Speakers' program is now complete and the Vendors listed below have accepted. All we need now is for you to respond. Early Bird Registration closes at the end of March 2009. After this time the Registrations costs go back to normal. All forms to register can be downloaded from the web site www.mosorchid.org and follow the prompts or write to The Secretary, 15 William Road, Little River 3211 We are now in the final stages of organizing the roster for orchid club members to help out for a half days work. The Vendors will take orders prior to coming to the conference if you phone them to bring down prearranged orders for you. This will save you freight costs. Our "Welcome Cocktail Party" on Wednesday 9 th begins at 6pm. You are able to attend this at a cost of $30 or if you are a full Registrant you get this free. (Full Registrants have first priority) The Conference Dinner is an extra cost. This will be held at the Italian Sports Club, Heath's Rd Werribee on Saturday 12 th. We can only accommodate about 300, so if you want to come, get your booking and money paid early, however Full Registrants will have first priority to this event. Exhibiting plants Everyone is eligible to exhibit their orchids. Most of you will be putting your exhibits on your club stand, but if they are not putting up a display you are welcome to bring along your orchids and will be made most welcome. Don't forget you can also exhibit in the Floral Art Section too.

18 th AOC CONFERENCE & SHOW WERRIBEE 8 th - 13 th Sept 2009 I would like to give 4 hours of my time to be a Volunteer to help with the running of Conference & Show. Please indicate which time suits you best. Please be aware the Lecture program is on Thursday & Friday when putting your name down to help. Jobs on the 4 days listed below are: supervising the orchid displays, supervising and organizing the crèche for sales plants, raffle ticket sales, spot door prize giveaways, door entry and giving out general information for visitors and Registrants.We can give you your preferred day, but will allot the jobs out as required on the day. Three winners were drawn from those members who had 100% seedling return. The Seedling winners for 2008 were: Roy Crowson, Geoff Ragg and Frank Bruce. Each winner received a $20 gift voucher from Bunnings. 2009 Seedling Competition The seedlings for the 2009 Seedling competition will be a Sarcochilus. They can be purchased only by those members who are willing to bring them back each month for viewing. The seedling Sarcochilus Sweetheart had one of the parents which was red and the other white with a big red centre, so there will be quite a few that have lots of colour in them. The seedlings will be sold for $5 from the front of the hall. Members will be asked to select a number and then they will be given the corresponding seedling that has the same number. Members cannot pick and choose. Also please have the correct money on hand. Vale Roy Takacs We are saddened to report the passing of our respected club member Roy Takacs, who passed away December 2008. Our sincere condolences are extended to his wife Madeline and family. Anthony has now been promoted to Open and S & M Hurwood have been promoted to Intermediate level beginning 2009.

Life Membership At our Xmas meeting, Mr. George Downie was presented with the Life Membership award. George has been a member of the club for 14 years. During this time George has not only been a delightful and lovely personality but he has assisted our club at meetings and shows. George has helped with Pots and Ferts since 2000 and has been part of the Committee since 2002. George has a simple and wonderful legacy: "If you belong to a club, one needs to put something back into it". Congratulations to George Downie on your achievement, it is certainly well deserved. President Report February 2009 Our February meeting is the start of a very big year for our club. Firstly I would like to wish you all the best for 2009. At the February meeting we will be taking booking for our first bus trip that will be held on Sunday 17 May 2009, to Australian Ferns and Orchids and Mt Beenak Orchids, the cost will be $20.00. Our April meeting is our AGM and it would be great if we could get new members on the committee. (Think about giving some time to your club and become a committee member) The first show for the year will be our Winter Show. This show will be on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May 2009, which is not too far away. So keep these dates clear. I look forward to see you all back at the club at our February meeting. Anthony Scerri President Social Trip While all members have been taking a break from Club life, our President Anthony has been busy organizing the next bus trip. The bus trip will be on Sunday the 17 th May 2009. The bus trip will be traveling to B & T Ferns and Orchids in Silvan, then on to Clive Hall s orchid nursery at Mt Beenak. A Barbecue lunch will be provided. Cost will be $20. Wilma will be taking names and deposits at the next meeting for those interested in taking part in the Bus trip. ORCHID SHOW CALENDAR Maribyrnong 2009 Orchid Shows Autumn Show: Winter Show: Spring Show: 23 rd & 24 th May 11 th and 12 th July Cancelled due to AOC AOC Conference 8 th to 13 th September Sarcochilus Festival: 14 th & 15 th November All Maribyrnong Orchid shows are conducted at our club rooms, which are located at Maribyrnong Community Centre in Randall Street. Orchid Species Society Sunday 15 th March - 9.30a.m. to 1p.m. City of Whitehorse Horticultural Centre Jolimont Road, Forest Hill Happy Birthday to Gerald Our dear Patron Gerald McCraith is celebrating his 100 th Birthday on rd the 23 of February. All our members extend their warmest wishes. Happy Birthday Gerald! Supper Roster Thank you to all those who provided and helped prepare the supper at monthly meetings through out last year. I will be bringing the Supper Roster to the February meeting, to be passed around so members can select a month to help with supper duties. Meanwhile the Club needs two members to help with the supper duties for this meeting. If you can help it would be much appreciated. All members are welcome to bring in a plate for supper to be enjoyed at the end of the evening. Committee Nominations At our April meeting we will be holding our A.G.M. We are hoping that some members may like to be part of the Maribyrnong Orchid Club Committee? The committee is always looking for new members willing to put in new ideas. Give it a good thought as next month s newsletter will include Nomination forms for those interested in becoming part of this committee. Guest Speaker this month The guest speaker this month will be Mr Ron Neyenhuis and he will be talking about using Coir (Coconut Husk) as a growing medium.
