FRACP written exam prep course 15th - 26th October 2018 Melbourne Course Arrival Information Course Venues Week 1 (15th - 19th October): The first week of the course will be held in the Skyline Conference Rooms at the Rydges on Swanston Hotel, which is located in The University of Melbourne precinct at 701 Swanston Street, Carlton 3053 (on the corner of Swanston Street and Lincoln Square North). See attached Map 2 Week 2 (22nd - 26th October): The second week of the course will be held in the David P Derham Theatre in the University of Melbourne s Law Building, located at 185 Pelham Street, Carlton, 3053 (Building 106, at bottom-centre of Map 2 below). Enter the building via the entrance on the corner of Pelham and Barry Streets. These venues are only 0.5 km (or a five minute walk) from each other. Registration on the first day The DeltaMed registration desk will be located just outside the Lecture Room on the fourth floor of the Rydges on Swanston Hotel. There will be signage in the lobby directing you to the Lecture Room. The Registration Desk will be open from 8:00am on Monday 15th October. The introduction to the course will start in the Lecture Room at 8:45 am and the first lecture of the course will commence at 9:00am. You will need to go to the Registration Desk at the beginning of each day to collect your course notes for that day. You should receive an entry-ticket for the course via email the week before the course. Please bring this with you to the course (it may be stored electronically on your smart phone or printed out). It will enable you to quickly sign-in and collect your course notes each day of the course. Please have it ready to show our registration staff for scanning on entry to the venue each morning. If you forget this entry ticket, please have some photo i.d. (licence, passport, hospital i.d.) ready to show one of the DeltaMed staff members at the Registration Desk (allow for extra-time to be taken). Parking Car parking in-and-around the venues can be very difficult. On-street parking is available in the surrounding area, but most of it is metered and of short-term duration. Public Car Parks: The Closest Car Park to the first week s venue is located on the corner of Grattan & Cardigan Streets (entrance on Cardigan Street) and costs $15 per day. The Eastern Precinct Underground Car Park is located at 375 Cardigan Street (between Elgin and Faraday Streets), Carlton, and costs $17 per day. Entrance is off Cardigan Street. See Map 1. The Elgin Street Car Park is located on the corner of Elgin & Lygon Streets (entrance on Elgin Street) and costs $18 per day. See Map 1. The Closest Car Park to the second week s venue is The University Square underground car park. The entrance is via Berkeley Street (near the corner with Grattan Street). Berkeley Street cannot be entered from Grattan Street due to tunnel works. It can be entered via Pelham Street. The carpark entrance is marked by P icons on Map 2 (below) and runs below the Alan Gilbert Building (Building 104, to the lower-left of map 2) and costs $20 per day. How to get to the Venue: By Public Transport The University and its surrounds are very well served by trams along Swanston Street and Royal Parade from the CBD and many other suburbs of Melbourne. Note: Royal Parade becomes Elizabeth Street near the CBD; and vice-versa.
Trams during the first week of the course The closest tram line to the first week s venue runs along Swanston Street and stops right outside the Rydges on Swanston Hotel (at the Lincoln Square Tram Stop). In the first week of the course, if you are travelling on an Elizabeth Street/Royal Parade tram, then you will need to get off at the Royal Melbourne Hospital stop and walk up Grattan Street to Swanston Street. Trams during the second week of the course The venue during the second week of the course is only a five minute walk from the first week s venue. And it is closer to the Elizabeth Street/Royal Parade tram route. All the afore-mentioned streets are marked on the attached Map 2. For full information on tram services and all Melbourne public transport, contact Public Transport Victoria (PTV) on 1800 800 007 (daily 6am - midnight) or on-line at http://ptv.vic.gov.au. The PTV website contains a journey planner and special section on how to reach the University. You will need a myki card to travel on public transport Please note that you will require a myki smart-card to travel on trams. The re-usable myki smartcard stores value to pay your fare. myki cards can be purchased at most 7-Eleven Stores and at major train stations, such as the Southern Cross Station (which is also the airport bus city terminal) and Flinders Street Station (Melbourne s main train station in the CBD). Ask the driver to take you to Rydges on Swanston Hotel at 701 Swanston Street, Carlton 3053 (on the corner of Swanston Street and Lincoln Square North). Information for travel from Melbourne Airport Melbourne s Tullamarine Airport is Melbourne s international and main domestic airport. All major airlines use this airport, apart from a few Jetstar flights which use Avalon Airport (see section on Avalon below). Please note that the majority of Jetstar flights operate from Tullamarine. **IMPORTANT: there may be travel delays due to current freeway expansion works. From the airport by Taxi: Taxis are available from the taxi rank outside the airport terminals. It is approximately a 35 minute trip from Tullamarine Airport to the University (21km) by taxi at non-peak times. At peak times, it can take up to 40-50 minutes. The 35 minute ride will cost around $55 - $60 Ask the driver to take you to the Rydges on Swanston Hotel at 701 Swanston Street, Carlton 3053 (on the corner of Swanston Street and Lincoln Square North). From the airport by SkyBus: The SkyBus service is an express bus service between Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) and Southern Cross Station in Melbourne s CBD. Daytime departures are every 10 minutes and the service operates 24/7. It is a 30 minute journey from the airport direct to the Southern Cross Station in the city at non-peak hour times. Fares are $18 adult single and $36 adult return. A Family Ticket (2 adults and up to 4 children) is $36 one-way; and $72 return. Taxis are readily available at Southern Cross Station and a taxi to the University should cost approximately $20 and could take around 20 minutes (it is approx a 4km trip). Alternatively, information on reaching the University by public transport from Southern Cross Station can be found on the Public Transport Victoria website http:// ptv.vic.gov.au; this will, however, involve changing trams and/or train, as there is no direct connection from the Station to the University. Skybus timetables and further information can be accessed at https://www.skybus.com.au It also runs a hotel transfer service from Southern Cross Station, which is free for Skybus airport passengers. Skybus Pick Ups and Drop Offs Points: Melbourne Tullamarine Airport T1: For Qantas Domestic & QantasLink travellers (Pick up & drop off) T3: For Virgin Australia, Regional Express and International travellers (Pick up & drop off) T4: For Jetstar and Tigerair domestic passengers (Pick up but drop off at Terminal 3) The SkyBus city terminal is located undercover at Southern Cross Station, near the corner of Bourke and Spencer Streets in the CBD. This is also the pick up/drop off location for the SkyBus Hotel Transfer Service. Information for travel from Avalon Airport Avalon Airport is situated some 55km from Melbourne s CBD. There is an airport bus linking it and Southern Cross Station in the CBD. The journey will normally take from 40-60 mins depending on traffic. Please refer to the information above in the section from the airport by Skybus on how to reach the University from Southern Cross Station. Further information on the bus service from Avalon Airport can be found at www.avalonairport.com.au Other information you might find useful prior to arrival Catering on the course Morning and afternoon tea will be provided on each day of the course. You can purchase lunch from the many nearby food-outlets on and off campus. A map of these food-outlets will be provided at the course. Course Schedule Registration will be open from 8.00 am on Monday 15th October. The introduction will commence at 8.45am on the first day. Then the first lecture will start at 9am. After the first day, registration will open at 8.30am each morning, the first lecture will commence at 9am and the last lecture will end at 5pm. The course will finish no later than 5 pm on the last day of the course (Friday 26th October). A more detailed copy of the schedule will be made available on our website closer to the course.
