President s Report Unfortunately our speaker for Monday night, Glen Pattison presenting on hypnotism, had to cancel. Rob is trying to get Glen another time, but this may not happen until next year. A special thank you to Alan Paynter who gave a job talk at short notice. Even though he has been retired for 16 years it was an interesting talk. Rob Hamer came to the rescue with a very entertaining set of short videos. Well done Rob, I enjoyed it, as did the members. The family picnic is on this Sunday (19th) from 11am at Fagan Park. (It is also the day of the Youth Exchange Welcome BBQ, so Bev and I will arrive a bit later). We are looking forward to it. Our Trivia night on Saturday 25th August is fast approaching. Rob Hamer and his team are organising what will be a fun night. What we need is prizes (and lots of them) for the raffles, silent auction and the trivia winners if you have something suitable, or can approach a sponsor for a suitable donation, that would be greatly appreciated. Please bring them with you to next Monday s meeting. Last count there were 22 tables booked if you haven t got your booking in yet, please contact Rob ASAP. We are hoping for a full house of 40 tables. Last Saturday night Clive, Bev and I went to Winston Hills Club trivia night. We sat with Miriam (Larry was still in hospital) and had an enjoyable night. This Saturday night (18th) is Macquarie Rotaract trivia night. Rob Hamer has organised a table, there are still a few places available if you would like to come. Also on Sat 25th August we have our next Bunnings BBQ. Barry is away, so I am coordinating this one. Please give your usual support, these BBQs are good fund raisers. The Garage Sale is on 22nd and 23rd September and planning is proceeding well. Thank you to those members who have nominated the stalls they prefer to be on. Tom has designed a large temporary awning to be mounted on the RFS building which will provide a large weatherproof and secured area. We have just been given the OK to proceed with this. The committee meetings are now every Monday after the Club meeting. Next Monday s meeting is a partners night. Faye Yarroll is a bilateral Cochlear implant recipient and the topic is "My only regret in life is that I had to wait so long to hear. President Bob Davison Volume 26 Issue 7 Page 2 of 8 Monday 20 August 2012

Night Report President Bob welcomed everyone to the meeting and the Loyal Toast was given by Clive Denmark, which on this occasion included the Queen. President Bob explained that at short notice the speaker for the night had to pull out of his engagement. It would appear that a quite a few members were disappointed as the topic of hypnotism was of great interest. Let s hope that he can be rebooked. Appreciation was given to Alan Paynter and Rob Hamer who came to the rescue by providing in house entertainment. Miska was then invited to give a rundown on his previous week s activities. There was very little mention of school but a good emphasis was given to ice skating that was undertaken twice in a seven day period. Miska obviously enjoys giving lessons which must come as second nature to him. He also mentioned going to the gym and then resting at home! Last Saturday he excelled himself when working at Donations In Kind and President Bob remarked how helpful he was loading up hospital beds and the strength he displayed sounds as if we are on a winner for all that lifting prior to 22nd September Fete It must be the Trivia Night season with several clubs conducting them with the idea of we ll go to yours if you ll come to ours which seems to be a very fair way of raising money. Rob Hamer reminded the members about our club s Trivia night on 25th August. There are 21 tables booked at the moment and Rob is anticipating that the final number will be about 30. Rob asked those members who have not replied to his email to let him know asap if you intend to go. There were a few hiccups regarding the booking but Rob has sorted it all out. Col Wright mentioned the Fagan Park picnic day next Sunday starting at 11am. This is a family occasion, ideal for young children to attend. It is suggested that you enter by the bottom gate and meet near the Mediterranean Garden which overlooks the lake. There is just a $5 entry/parking fee. If the weather is not good either Colin or Carol will decide whether or not to cancel. David Turnbull then told the meeting that as of Monday 13th August he had sold his business. This was greeted with loud cheers and from the look on David s face there was a heck of a lot of relief after 44 years in the business. He added that he would remain in the role of manager for probably three years with the company that took it over Intelara. President Bob reminded members that there are quite a few outstanding membership fees to be paid. He requested that the matter be attended to as soon as possible. Alan Paynter then gave a talk on his working life, with a wry smile on his face when he mentioned that he had been retired 16 years no wonder he looks so young! Volume 26 Issue 7 Page 3 of 8 Monday 20 August 2012

He mentioned the coincidence that he and David both attended St. George Technical College and at the annual giving of awards they both received a prize. Little did they know that they would meet again many years later at the WPH & Cherrybrook Rotary Club. Alan mentioned that back in the middle 1960s he did general plumbing then branched out into specialty bathroom renovations. With a stroke of genius he decided to use a Franklin caravan as a mobile showroom taking all the samples of baths, toilets, tiles, etc. to various locations. It was towed by a Holden Monaro. He became President of the Master Plumbers Association in 1980 and remained in business for 30 years. However, at 53 years old he experienced some health problems. He spoke briefly about his eye condition and the fact that he could not drive at all. Fortunately the condition rectified after about 13 months. In l996 he retired from business, did overseas travel, had improved health and is happy to report that he is going well. Rob then took over the entertainment of the evening by providing all sorts of funny adverts and snippets from old TV shows. He recounted a story of a well known footballer at a dance who had made some trite remarks in the presence of his wife. She apparently socked him full in the mouth and he fell flat on the floor in front of a crowd. While struggling to get up, with a smile on his face he said What a Woman. There were many advertisements for Bud Light and a warning about an underwater birth that might be disturbing to those who have not witnessed this before! The final shot was a plucked chicken, sitting in a basin of water with an egg between its legs. WHO THINKS THESE THINGS UP? Fines and cross fines netted good revenue through the usual devious means and it was Bob & Bev Davison s wedding anniversary this week. There was a reminder that next week s speaker will be talking on Cochlear Implants an Australian invention. Clive will be speaker host and Graham Evans is night reporter.
