90 YEARS O F HISTO R Y The Barclay hotel was built in 1926 as part of Grand Central Terminal s urban design plan which launched Manhattan s Midtown East renaissance. With a fashionable, yet residential atmosphere, the hotel became popular among the New York social register set.
The history of The Barclay Hotel is directly linked to the building of Grand Central Terminal. Owners of the Terminal placed tracks underground and offered building sites for the development on the roof of its new terminal.
