The Bank, Highgate, London N6 5HF t: 020 8340 2328 f: 020 8341 5698 e: info@channing.co.uk www.channing.co.uk 26 September 2017 Dear Parent/Guardian YEAR 9 DUKE OF EDINBURGH S BRONZE AWARD At Channing, Year 9 students have the opportunity to complete the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Students attended an assembly last week introducing and explaining the requirements of the Scheme. DofE participants need to complete four sections: physical, skill, volunteering and expedition. The physical, skill and volunteering section is organised by and completed in the student s own time. These aspects of the Award Scheme should be started as soon as possible. The expedition section is organised by the Channing DofE team. Students will be required to complete a practice expedition and an assessed expedition. Leading up to the practice expedition, there will be a parents information evening. The dates for these expeditions are: Practice expedition: Wednesday 20 - Friday 22 June 2018 in the New Forest (DofE & PE trip during enrichment week) Assessed expedition: Saturday 08 - Sunday 09 September 2018 in the Chilterns The expedition training is incorporated in an Outdoor Activities unit of work in physical education lessons. This unit will be started in January 2018. These lessons cover map work, navigation skills, route planning, safety, first aid and camp craft. For more detailed information about the Bronze Award please follow the link to the presentation that was given to Year 9, https://prezi.com/view/fkyhnp5pnh52m67zlvim/, or go to www.dofe.org. Equipment & Costs Online entrance packs, a compass, a map case and maps for the expeditions will be ordered by the school at a charge of 69.00 per student. This amount will be added to your autumn 2017 end of term bill. There will be further charges to cover the costs of the expeditions and these will be detailed in future correspondence. The total cost of these two trips will amount to approximately 215.00 (practice 140.00 and assessed 75.00) and will be added to your summer 2018 end of term bill. Your daughter will also require a large rucksack of approximately 60 litres, a sleeping bag, a sleeping mat, waterproofs and appropriate clothing for camping and walking in the countryside.
Please see the attached personal kit list for more details. Shared items such as tents, cooking stoves and fuel bottles are provided by school. To confirm your daughter s participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Scheme, please return the completed reply slip with the pupils and parents agreement to the Bronze DofE box in the PE department by Friday 13 th October. When returning the reply slip, your daughter should take a pink Signature Log Sheet from the DofE box, so that she can start counting her physical, skill and volunteering hours. Each onehour session should be recorded and signed on the pink sheet by the activity s assessor. We are also allowed to back date by 3 months, but not before 1 st September 2017. Once your daughter has chosen her physical, skill and volunteering activities, the attached Record Sheet should be returned to the DofE box in the PE department. The Record Sheet provides us of the details of your daughter s chosen sport, skill and volunteering activity, and helps to avoid your daughter commencing an unsuitable activity. Should your daughter have any questions about any aspect of the Bronze Award, please encourage her to come and speak to Miss Wijmeersch during DofE Club which runs every Friday from 12.45 13.15 in the Bursar s office. Finally, should your daughter not want to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, please tick the option on the reply slip. If your daughter does not wish to do the Award, she still has the option to take part in the practice expedition, as this is a combined DofE and Physical Education trip. Please indicate your choice on the reply slip. Yours sincerely, Miss E Wijmeersch Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award Coordinator
