The Blue World Institute on island Losinj in cooperation with the Town of Mali Losinj and Tourist Board is contributing to the research and conservation of the marine environment through public awareness and education. The Blue World was formed with the direct intention to take over the research and public awareness actions of the Adriatic Dolphin Project (ADP) started and managed by Tethys Research Institute in 1987. Blue World was founded in 1999 by 10 founders, mostly local but all involved in ADP during previous years. Presently, Blue World carries out three major programs, research, conservation and education.
The current priorities are: - Continuation of the work of Adriatic Dolphin Project, the longest ongoing study of one resident bottlenose dolphin community in the Mediterranean Sea - Establishment and promotion of the Lošinj Dolphin Reserve, a marine reserve in Lošinj - Cres archipelago, sustainable development and integrated coastal management of the area - Management and continuous content development of the Lošinj Marine Education Center (LMEC), a local education and interpretation center on marine environment and bottlenose dolphin community inhabiting the area opened in 2003. - Securing financial stability of the ADP and LMEC through activities, programs, donations and sponsorships - Creation of a public awareness team from the local community and expansion of the educational activities - Promotion and encouragement of sustainable use of the resources found within the Lošinj archipelago - Expansion of the research area and opening of new research and new field bases in Central and Southern Adriatic.
