With now over 400 breweries across the state, New York is currently ranked 4th in the country for number of craft breweries. But craft beer is not about mass production; it is about passionate locals employing artisan skills to infuse the values of their community into flavorful and memorable brews. WXXI is pleased to be the presenting station of this new 13-part series, where hosts Matt Archambault and Maya Contreras travel to various regions of the state learning about the brewer s stories as they hunt for great beers. Breweries featured include Rochester s own Three Heads Brewing, Genesee Brewery and Swiftwater Brewing Company. Thirsty for adventure? Brewed in New York has you covered! I m pleased to announce that WXXI is presenting a new series that spotlights the craft beer revolution happening in our town Norm Silverstein and across New York State. Brewed in New York premieres Thursday, July 5 at 8:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV, as well as on public broadcasting stations across New York State. The premiere episode spotlights three of our breweries here in Rochester. More about the series can be found on the front cover of this magazine and at BrewedinNewYorkShow.com I also encourage you to follow the series on Facebook: @BrewedInNewYorkShow and Twitter: @BrewedInNY. I hope you enjoy the series and maybe even find your way to one of our local craft breweries. I have more good news last month our WXXI News team brought home four awards from the New York State Associated Press Association. The awards recognize excellence in writing, presentation, and reporting by radio and television stations from around New York State. The first place award went to the WXXI News Exited podcast produced by reporters Karen Shakerdge and Veronica Volk from WXXI s Inclusion Desk. The fivepart podcast and broadcast series shares the stories of eight young people as they navigate transitions in various settings high school, higher education, sheltered workshops, day programs and home life. If you haven t listened to this series yet, I encourage you to do so by visiting WXXINews.org. WXXI s Inclusion Desk is a multi-platform reporting effort designed to inform and transform attitudes and behavior about inclusion. It is part of our Move to Include initiative a partnership between WXXI and the Golisano Foundation. Congratulations also goes to second place award winners: Beth Adams for her feature story on Challenger Baseball; Denise Young and Jeanne Fisher for their series spotlighting local Vietnam veterans; and Veronica Volk for her continued coverage of the massive flooding along the Lake Ontario Shoreline and the St. Lawrence Seaway in 2017. I m proud of the incredible work that comes out of our newsroom. They are truly dedicated to bringing you fair, balanced, and in-depth reporting that keeps you informed on what s happening in our community and around the world. An award-winning news department, great programming, and strong engagement in our community none of this would be possible without your individual support and the continued support of our underwriters. We can never say thank you enough for being part of the WXXI family. I hope you re enjoying your summer. Perhaps we ll see you at the Corn Hill Arts Festival, checking out the 6x6 artwork at RoCo, in line for a movie at the Little Theatre, or at one of our Hochstein at High Falls concerts. There s so much to do in Rochester this time of year and WXXI is proud to be part of it! Best regards, WXXI will be at the Corn Hill Arts Festival July 14 and 15. Be sure to stop by our booth and say hello to our staff and volunteers. You might even meet one of our radio hosts, TV producers, news reporters, or podcasters. NEWS&EVENTS JOHN WAGNER OWNER, WAGNER VINEYARDS ESTATE WINERY Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER On Seneca Lake in Lodi, the Wagner family has been growing grapes for five generations. In 1979, Bill Wagner opened WAGNER VINEYARDS ESTATE WINERY and began producing all estatebottled wine, concentrating specifically on vinifera wines. The family-owned business has since opened The Ginny Lee Café, a full-service restaurant and wedding venue, and Wagner Valley Brewing Company. Owner John Wagner shares more. Q. How would you characterize Wagner s wines? By growing all of our own grapes, we have the ultimate control over the quality of our fruit and are able to maximize varietal flavors. This results in wines that are fruit-forward and very expressive of traditional varietal character. Our wines range from dry to sweet with an emphasis on the balance of the finished wine, resulting in food-friendly wines. Q. Most popular selections? Dry Riesling, Semi-Dry Riesling, Dry Rosé of Cabernet Franc, Unoaked Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Q. How does your location on Seneca Lake impact the growing process? We re located on a small sliver of land on the east side of Seneca Lake, known as the banana belt, that spans from Lodi to Hector. This land is adjacent to the deepest section of the lake and tends to have slightly warmer winter temperatures and higher growing degree days during the growing season. Q. What is one thing most people don t know about making wine? Grape characteristics vary with every vintage, resulting in the need for different winemaking techniques every year. Q. Tell us about your Octagon Cellar Club. Our Octagon Cellar Club, named after the unique shape of the winery, provides members with four shipments per year of three specially selected bottles of wine. Selections focus on our premium award-winning vinifera wines and each shipment can include a Library selection, limited release, or pre-release. Q. What events are on deck for the summer? On Friday nights from Memorial Day to Labor Day, we have our Pub Nights on the Brew Deck, which include picnic-style dinners and live music, and of course, Wagner wines and brews available for purchase. Our customer appreciation weekend, Alta B Weekend, will be on July 28 and 29. wagnervineyards.com Wagner Vineyards @WagnerVineyards @wagnerflx To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email underwriting@wxxi.org > A CAMEL HERDER LEADS HIS CAMEL TRAIN OVER THE SAND DUNCES IN NUBRA VALLEY, INDIA. CREDIT: COURTESY OF MATT DUTILE TED WILLIAMS THE GREATEST HITTER WHO EVER LIVED MONDAY, JULY 23 AT 9PM ON WXXI-TV This American Masters documentary takes an in-depth look at Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams. It honors Williams centennial (August 30, 1918 July 5, 2002) and looks at the impact the iconic hitter has had on the current generation of stars in Major League Baseball. To fans, the Boston Red Sox player was baseball s Peter Pan: the eternal Kid who combined preternatural gifts with a fierce work ethic to become one of the greatest hitters who ever lived. Lesser known was how he was driven by shame over his Mexican-American background, humiliation over his father s weakness, and a deep rage over his mother s virtual abandonment of him and his younger brother. In The Walk, by Elizabeth Strout an older man sets out for a walk in his small New England town and ponders changes in his life and community. Ellen Burstyn reads this work by the Pulitzer Prize winner author of Olive Kittridge. The second story, Listen, by Susan Minot is a provocative collection of rumors, concerns, and perceptions about the state of our world- -as if we are overhearing the whole country muttering under its breath. Jennifer Ikeda and Khris Lewin read with urgency. ORDER 9066 SUNDAY, JULY 15-29 AT 9PM On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, just months after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Some 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were forced from their homes on the West Coast and sent to one of ten relocation camps, where they were imprisoned behind barbed wire for the length of the war. Two-thirds of them were American citizens. This moving, three-part series, hosted by Sab Shimono and Pat Suzuki, chronicles the history of this incarceration through vivid, first-person accounts of those who lived through it. With archival audio, historical context, and deeply personal narratives, the series offers audiences a nuanced and memorable account of how this shocking violation of American democracy came to pass and its legacy in the present.

Formed in 2002, the Festival works to enhance quality of life in the Finger Lakes by fostering an appreciation of music, particularly classical and modern chamber music. The festival is the brainchild of Richard Auldon Clark and Joyce Hunt of Hunt Country Vineyards, who met by chance at the New York State Fair the summer of 2001 and discovered their mutual love of classical music and the Finger Lakes Wine Country. Richard expressed his dream of bringing his Manhattan Chamber Orchestra to the area and Joyce enthusiastically offered her winery as the venue.
