The words Nura Gili are from the language of the Eora people, Nura meaning place and Gili meaning fire/light. Nura Gili at UNSW brings together these concepts to create the meaning place of fire and light. The theme of place remains important to the many cultures of Indigenous Australia. It is therefore important for Indigenous Programs at UNSW to acknowledge and recognise the very place that we have all come together to work, share, study and learn. The site of Indigenous Programs at UNSW is located near a 8000 year old camp site within the grounds of Prince of Wales Hospital. The site holds significance as a place of gathering, meeting, teaching, sharing and as a place where the ancient people taught Aboriginal culture and history. The concept of a fireplace and fire in general reflects a warm, relaxed and nurturing environment created by age-old fires many years ago and recreated today by the staff and students of the Indigenous Programs. The idea that there is a place in UNSW where a fire is burning, a place where people can come to gather and share is indeed the inspiration, drive and purpose for all involved with Nura Gili at UNSW. The logo was designed by Lucy Simpson a Yuwaalaraay woman, and graduate of a Bachelor of Design from the College of Fine Arts, UNSW. The inspiration for the design comes primarily from the importance and significance of the place. The design draws on aspects of the flame such as the warmth, which is represented through colours. A symbolic representation of fire, is quite organic and fluid, yet strong and powerful in its structure. The heart of the flame is represented in the centre of the design, and is symbolic of the coming together of the Nura Gili Student Centre and Resource Centre. It may also represent both members from the Indigenous and non-indigenous community coming together to learn and share.
