Regime breakdown by population and region, NIT 00 vs. NIT 01 Over the last decade, governments across the former Soviet space have used corrupt judicial and law enforcement bodies to incapacitate civic activists and eradicate the independent media, moving more and more countries into the category of Consolidated Authoritarian Regimes. In NIT 01, seven countries, with a combined population of.9 million, lived under entrenched authoritarian leadership. Change in Democracy Scores, NIT 00 01 Democracy Scores which represent the average of a country s democratization indicators have steadily declined in Eurasia, as well as in the EU member countries of Central and Southeastern Europe. Scores improved significantly in the Balkan region before the European economic crisis, but began a steep decline thereafter.
