Today, all five siblings of the fifth generation (Ed, Will, Frank, Ellie and Mimi) play a key part in the success of the family business. Selling their own prime lamb and angus beef through their specialist butcher shop based in Launceston, Landfall Farm Fresh, the siblings have harnessed the paddock to plate concept and created a vertically integrated company, including breeding, birthing, raising, marketing, selling and distributing. Frank Archer may be the youngest son in the family but he stands as the grounding force of the family business. Frank will share his family s story and give us an insight into the innovations of his generation.
The Seasons of Life with Olympic Swimmer, Shane Gould Shane Gould won 5 individual Olympic swimming medals at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games 3 gold 1 silver 1 bronze. She received unprecedented national and international fame for her achievements, with world athlete of the year and Australian of the Year awards. Shane withdrew from competitive swimming when she was 17 but transferred life skills from elite sport experiences to diverse projects and life adventures over 40 years. Some of these are; farming carpet wool sheep, training horses, teaching surfing, raising four children, and running small businesses - blueberries, swim school, riding school, holiday accommodation, public speaking. Shane is a lifelong learner, doing two masters degrees in Environmental Management and Contemporary Art and is now in her final year of a PhD, studying the culture of swimming in Australia. Today she resides on the beautiful East Coast of Tasmania where she researches, writes, photographs and creates programs for drowning prevention and people fearful of the water. She swims in the cool waters off the coast of Bicheno every morning with an organically formed group of community members, humourously called, The Coffee Club Wild Ocean Swimmers. We are privileged to have Shane join us at GrowthLink to talk about her journey at each phase in the seasons of her unique life. Based at Tunbridge in the Tasmanian Midlands, Annandale (2600ha) has traditionally been a fine merino farm carrying 5000 sheep, with some irrigated and dryland pastures and cropping (poppies, grazing winter cereals) grown when its 465mm annual rainfall and creek flow allowed. In 2014 the Gardner s changed the paradigm when they established a 1000-cow dairy herd in an area where this had never been done before. Purchasing 1840 megalitres of water, the Gardners capitalised on the $100 million Midlands Water Scheme which is the largest irrigation development in Tasmania s history. The scheme itself won an Engineering Australia Award, an Earth Award and was a finalist in the National Infrastructure Awards. The scheme has the capacity to supply 38,500ML of water to traditionally dry areas of Tasmania over two delivery periods in summer and winter. The Gardner s have been the courageous leaders in taking advantage of the opportunity this irrigation scheme has offered and Richard and Emily will share the story of innovation with GrowthLink.
