Loch Monzievaird

L o c h M o n z i e v a i r d 3 Introduction Loch Monzievaird Self Catering offers great accommodation in surroundings full of natural beauty and interest. This area of highland Perthshire abounds with wildlife and activities, and it is also a convenient centre from which to tour other parts of Scotland. History King Kenneth 1V of Scotland was killed at the battle of Monzievaird in 1003. On the north side of the Loch, on what was known as the "Dry Isle" are the remains of an old fortress called Castle Cluggy. This was the original home of the lairds of Ochtertyre. The fortress was referred to as "ancient" in a charter of 1467. It belonged to the Red Comyn who was eventually killed by Robert the Bruce in the convent of the Minorites at Dumfries. It is thought that Sir William Murray last inhabited the castle in the middle of the 17th Century. About eighty yards to the west of the ruin is a small artificial island that served as the prison. At the west end of the loch is a large mound, where plague victims were buried in the reign of Charles 1. Landscape The grounds in which we are located are part of a designed landscape, which began, with the building of Ochtertyre House as the Murray family seat in Perthshire between 1784-90. This is a Georgian category A listed building that looks out over Loch Monzievaird from an elevated position. Ochtertyre is now a private house, but in its time it has been a school (Seymour Lodge 1939-1965), a theatre and a restaurant.

4 L o c h M o n z i e v a i r d The self catering accommodation has been developed under separate ownership from Ochtertyre estate and is contained within an area of approximately 40 acres at the west end of Loch Monzievaird, including the original Gamekeepers Lodge. The designed landscape has been described in many articles over the years and has been quoted as having outstanding architectural value, as making a significant contribution to the local scenery and providing the highest values in nature conservation. Our grounds are protected by Historic Scotland. Woodlands 19th century accounts of Ochtertyre describe fine trees harmoniously grouped in the grounds. The woodlands were established as part of the designed landscape in the latter half of the 18th century. They include many two and three hundred-year-old oak, ash, beech and Scots pine trees. There are also some other interesting varieties that are marked for public knowledge. The scenery was beautiful enough to inspire Robert Burns on a visit to Ochtertyre in June 1787 to write: "Is there a spot in Scotia fair So full of beauty rich and rare, Where Nature with a lavish hand, Has formed a perfect fairyland? All gaze with wonder, and admire Thy beauties, lovely Ochtertyre!"

12 L o c h M o n z i e v a i r d Activities at Loch Monzievaird Walking: The walk around Loch Monzievaird has been described by guests as one of the best short walks that they have ever known. The lochside path takes you on a winding route through huge beech trees, past wild irises and feeding birds of all varieties. From many vantage points you can observe the Georgian splendour of Ochtertyre house rising high above the loch. Pets: Well behaved cats and dogs are welcome at Monzievaird. We have 4 lodges which remain pet-free year round. Logging & nature trail: The path around the loch is about a mile and a half, an idyllic setting for a jog, run or nature walk. Many species of birds and other animals visit us throughout the year. Play areas: We have a small play area with swings, a slide, and a climbing frame, and large open areas for other ball games. Space is not a problem.

L o c h M o n z i e v a i r d 13 Fishing: There are three fishing boats at the boat house that can be hired on a daily basis to fish for wild brown trout. The season runs from the 13th of March to the 6th of October, with the best months being April, May & June. The loch is not stocked, but holds a good head of Brook Trout that spawn in the feeder burns. Fishing on the loch is by boat only. For bank fishing we have a mile of brown trout fishing close by on the river Earn, with clear banks and good picnic places. Tennis: The hard tennis court is located close to our reception building in a well protected position surrounded by conifer and larch trees. This can be booked and hired by the hour. We also have a tennis ball machine for hire and tennis coaching can be arranged. Disc Golf: We have our own 9 hole disc golf course, hidden well away from the lodges in a wooded glen of old oak trees. This is a challenging game for all ages and a very popular sport in the U.S.A. which involves the use of frisbee discs to throw from tee to target. Discs can be hired from Reception.

14 L o c h M o n z i e v a i r d Other activities close by: Golf: There are 30 golf courses in Perthshire ranging from small highland nine hole courses, to eighteen hole championship courses. St. Andrews and Carnoustie are about an hours drive. From Monzievaird we have about 20 courses within half an hours drive, 6 of which you can reach in less than 15 minutes Crieff (one 18 and two 9 hole courses), Comrie a beautiful 9 hole highland course, St.. Fillans and Muthill (both 9 hole). Crieff Hydro Hotel has a driving range and 6 hole junior course at it s golf centre, less than a mile from here. The three championship courses at Gleneagles are only 15 minutes drive. Fishing: There is a wide choice of game fishing in Perthshire. In addition to the boat fishing on Loch Monzievaird, the River Earn is very close by for trout fishing and we have access to a lovely two mile beat 2 minutes from our grounds. The Earn also has a good autumn run of Salmon. The huge River Tay system is easily accessible for days out. Fishing can be arranged to suit most requirements depending on the time of year. Salmon fishing must be booked in advance. Salmon and Trout association casting instruction (STANIC) is available at Monzievaird. Riding: There are good riding centres at Gleneagles and at Crieff Hydro, both welcome the novice and the experienced. Trekking is also available at other locations locally. Activity centres: There are many locations for canoeing, white water rafting, and highland safari's. The longest zip line in Europe at Go Ape is within 30 minutes drive.

L o c h M o n z i e v a i r d 15 Glenturret Distillery Winter at Loch Monzievaird We are open all year. During the winter months we offer short breaks over weekends and midweek as well as our weekly breaks. Christmas and Hogmanay are reserved for weeks only. The lodges have very efficient heating systems and are well insulated from the weather. The winter months can offer the opportunity to see the countryside in dramatic form. Rivers and burns in full spate rushing over waterfalls, frozen lochs and white hillsides glistening in the sunshine. For wet days there are swimming pools in Crieff and Perth. For a day out skiing we are only 45 minutes drive from Glenshee. Most golf courses are open with winter greens in use when weather dictates. Glenturret Distillery: Glenturret is Scotland's oldest distillery. The Turret Burn rises high up on Ben Chonzie and flows into Loch Turret, from where it rushes down through one of the loveliest glens in Scotland. The distillery is located at the foot of the glen and is just a short walk or drive from Monzievaird.
