(ca.1859-1920) MAP COLLECTION, 1876-1913 Processed by: Ted Guillaum Archival Technical Services Accession Number: 2010-054 Date Completed: June 28, 2010 Revised by Cathi Carmack: June 2, 2018 Location: VI-C-top

INTRODUCTION The Oswald A. Dietz Map Collection, 1876-1913, consists of 84 hand drawn maps and one letter. Mr. Dietz was a civil engineer in Chattanooga, Tennessee and his maps are predominantly subdivision maps of the Chattanooga area. All the maps in this collection have been encapsulated and are in very good condition. They were removed from the Map Collection where they had formerly been assigned number 648. They are now contained in one oversized archival box. Each carries a number as noted on the container list and titles are transcribed as found. This collection has not been microfilmed. There are no restrictions on the use of the materials in this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT Mr. Oswald A. Dietz, ca.1859-1920, was a civil engineer in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The 84 maps in this collection, most hand-drawn, show his technical skill and precision as a map maker. Most of the maps consist of property that was subdivided and developed in the Chattanooga area as the city expanded. Mr. Dietz was born in San Antonio, Texas but resided in Chattanooga for the last 40 years of his life. His wife died in the yellow fever epidemic of 1878. He was employed with the Sewer Pipe Company in Chattanooga at the time of his sudden death at age 61 on January 26, 1920. He was survived by his son, Lawrence A. Dietz, who was serving in the United States Army in Coblenz, Germany, and by a sister, Miss Katie Dietz of Wiesbaden, Germany. Source: Obituary, Chattanooga Daily Times, 1-27-1920, Page 3.
