But in more recent years, outside sources have influenced the local music. "Zouk" from the French Caribbean is changing the sound of calypso, while steel band music has been imported from nearby Trinidad and Tobago. Healing Initiative Leadership Linkage (HILL) Student Magazine Strategy Country challenges and opportunities An International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation on August 27 ended a ten-day visit to Grenada warning that the local economy continues to face significant challenges from high unemployment, a large debt overhang, and balance sheets weakened by impaired loans. The IMF team headed by Aliona Cebotari, the fund s mission chief for Grenada, was conducting the first review of Grenada s IMF-sponsored US$21.7 million programme under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) that was approved in June this year. Cold War 1983 Conflicts- Possible Compromise United States invades Grenada Constitution rights and Duties Whereas every person in Grenada is entitled to the fundamental rights and freedoms, that is to say, the right, whatever his race, place of origin, political opinions, colour, creed or sex, but subject to respect for the rights and freedoms of others and for the public interest, to each and all of the following, namelya. life, liberty, security of the person and the protection of the law ; b. freedom of conscience, of expression and of assembly and association ; c. protection for the privacy of his home and other property and from deprivation of property without compensation ; and d. the right to work, The Invasion of Grenada was a 1983 United States led invasion of the Caribbean island nation of Grenada, which has a population of about 91,000 and is located 160 kilometres (99 mi) north of Venezuela, that resulted in a U.S. victory within a matter of weeks. Codenamed Operation Urgent Fury, it was triggered by the internal strife within the People's Revolutionary Government that resulted in the house arrest and the execution of the previous leader and second Prime Minister of Grenada Maurice Bishop, and the establishment of a preliminary government, the Revolutionary Military Council with Hudson Austin as Chairman. The invasion resulted in the appointment of an interim government, followed by democratic elections in 1984. The country has remained a democratic nation since then.

Language Alphabets English Foods Cuisine. Special dishes reflect the cultural diversity of Grenada. The national dish, Oil Down is a combination of breadfruit, coconut milk, turmeric (misnamed saffron), dumplings, callaloo (taro leaves), and salted meat such as saltfish (cod), smoked herring or salt beef. Learning from the past and present for the future The recorded history of the Caribbean island of Grenada begins in the early 17th century. First settled by indigenous peoples, by the time of European contact it was inhabited by the Caribs. French colonists drove most of the Caribs off the island and established plantations on the island, eventually importing African slaves to work on the sugar plantations. Control of the island was disputed by Great Britain and France in the 18th century, with the British ultimately prevailing. In 1795, Fédon's Rebellion, inspired by the Haitian Revolution, very nearly succeeded, and was crushed with significant military intervention. Slavery was abolished in the 1830s. In 1885, the island became the capital of the British Windward Islands. Grenada achieved independence from Britain in 1974. Following a coup by the Marxist New Jewel Movement in 1983, the island was invaded by United States troops and the government overthrown. The island's major crop, nutmeg, was significantly damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Healing Initiative Leadership Linkage (HILL) Student Magazine SYMBOLS & SIGNIFICANCE Country Name GRENADA

It also represents a link to Grenada's former name, which was the "Isle of Spice". The red colour of the flag stands for courage and vitality, gold for wisdom and warmth, and green for vegetation and agriculture. NATIONAL ANIMAL AND BIRD The animal life is varied and includes such wild animals as the mona monkey (a small, long-tailed, West African species that was introduced by slaves), the manicou (a species of opossum), the agouti (a rabbit-sized rodent, which is brown or grizzled in colour)

NATIONAL SPORT Cricket is one of the most popular sports of Grenada, with intense inter-island rivalry with its Caribbean neighbours. Grenada National Cricket Stadium of St. George's hosts domestic and international cricket matches. NATIONAL TREE Grenada's national flower is the Bougainvillea (Nyctaginaceae), a genus of woody climbers. Bougainvilleas are widelygrown and popular tropical vines whose main attractions are very colorful bracts or leaves. These bracts are mistaken by many as the flowers of the plant because of their prominence. NATIONAL FRUIT BREADFRUIT Official language: ENGLISH Capital: ST. GEORGE S Population: 107,317 THANK YOU
