From the Badges? We Don t Need No Stinkin Badges! Or Do We? Perhaps everyone hasn t seen the 1948 movie, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, starring Humphrey Bogart, but I m sure everyone s heard the famous quote (actually misquote) from that film: Badges? We don t need no stinkin badges! The actual line in the movie was somewhat longer than that, but this abbreviated version, first used in a 1967 episode of The Monkees and later in the 1974 Mel Brooks film, Blazing Saddles, certainly caught the gist of the original, and became the version so often quoted. It is, of course, a quote used to express contempt and protest against rules, conformity and convention. One of my favorite versions of the quote was on a t-shirt my dog got for me: Leashes? We don t need no stinkin leashes! She was right, we didn t. But the truth is, sometimes we actually do need those badges and leashes, even if we don t like to admit it. Although many of you may not be aware of it, our chapter actually has some of those pesky leashes, four of them to be exact four policies that provides basic rules on how we deal with Alcohol, Group Riding, Group Riding Formation, and Releases. The first three are important because they help keep us safe during our chapter rides, while the last one is important because it helps ensure our Harley-Davidson insurance policy, which provides liability protection for all of us, remains in force. Our Alcohol Policy is pretty simple and straightforward: Alcohol will not be consumed during or before a chapter ride. Our Group Riding Policy provides basic guidelines for riding safely in groups, including start with a full tank and empty bladder, don t split lanes or pass a motorcycle in your lane, don t block traffic and the allimportant Ride Your Own Ride. Our Group Riding Formation Policy stipulates the Staggered Formation as the default riding formation for chapter rides and details how the staggered formation works. Our Release Forms Policy explains the necessity and importance of completing and maintaining release forms for various chapter activities. It also stipulates that a member sponsoring a guest is responsible for making sure the guest signs the appropriate release form(s), and explains what release forms are required for minors, as well. These policies put us all on the same sheet of music when we participate in chapter rides and activities. And they provide the authority to make sure our rides and activities remain safe and fun for all of us. Take a moment and check them out won t take long, they re all short. They should be on our website by the time you read this. RIDE SAFE AND OFTEN Rod

. APR. Curtis, Safety Officer Upcoming Events 8 th Chapter Meeting 11 th LOH Meeting 16 th Easter 28 th Leesburg Bikefest No one is lost if they are riding a motorcycle, may be misplaced but it ll all work out. We still have riders pushing the red lights when we are group riding. I promise, no one gets left behind so it isn t worth the risk. Keep in mind our Lead RC and sweeps are in constant communication. Enjoy but be safe! MAY Joe, Historian 13 th Chapter Meeting 14 th Mother s Day 29 th Memorial Day JUNE Daytona Bike Week #76 is now behind us. Cooler weather invaded for the week but to the 2 nd Dawn to Dusk Ride visitors from up north was probably still a great break from the real cold. Like the so called fake 10 th Chapter Meeting news going around, apparently Florida has fake cold weather. I actually enjoy it cold enough to put on a leather but hate wearing chaps or my cold 18 weather Father s riding Day pants. A visit from my nephew and his friend who came down for bike week, both ride HD's. Makes me happy to see younger folks sharing our passion. Hopefully some of the younger riders will start joining HOG chapters to keep the clubs going and learn to share their passion with other likeminded folks. Hope you all have a safe spring season. Stay Well (and warm) Be sure to check the calendar for other activities and rides.

Our Jan. 2017 HOG of the month is Lee Reney who lives in Leesburg with his significant other Patricia Metcalf. Lee is originally from Syracuse, New York and worked for 25 years at Carrier Corp. as a skilled tradesman. Lee also served 25 years with the United States Marine Corp, retiring in 1992. (Thank you for your service) Lee rides a 2007 Heritage Soft Tail Classic (Patriot Model). Lee has been riding for approximately 50 years and joined HOG in 2003. His most memorable ride was 5 years ago with his son to Rolling Thunder in Washington, DC on Memorial weekend. Our Feb. 2017 member to recognize is Ruth Brzezinski lives in Tavares and is originally from Fenton, Michigan and is retired. Ruth s most memorable ride was to Destin Beach for the Florida State Rally and it was the first rally she ever attended and she had a blast! There were bikes everywhere, beautiful weather and plenty to do. Ruth met so many nice people too! Ruth has been riding as a passenger with her husband Marshall for 8 years and has been a HOG member for 5 years. She is one of three activity officers of LCHOG and proud to say she has been in that position for 4 years and loving every moment of it. We are going on a cruise for our next LOH weekend. Carnival Paradise, 4 nights departing May 18, 2017, returning May 22, visiting Cozumel Mexico. Room rates range from $364 for inside cabin to $699 for balcony. Still working out the details. You will need a passport. Sign in sheet was started at our LOH meeting. If you would like to join us send me an email or call me. Our March 2017 spotlight is Jeanette Bare who lives in Inverness with her husband Jim Bridgeland. Jeanette rides 2011 Hot White Denim Streetglide and has been Luz riding Temple, for 9 years Ladies and a HOG of Harley member for also 9 years. Jeanette and Jim moved to Inverness from Marathon and both LOH@LakeCountyHOG.com are retired. Jeanette enjoyed her rides through California, Oregon coast and up to Milwaukee to Harley Museum. Jeanette had some good riding while visiting SD-Deadwood, Needles Hwy, Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Sturgis and over to Devil s Tower in Wyoming. Her most beautiful rides were while on a nice sunny day over the bridges in the Florida Keys. The beautiful clear blue sky, with the sun shimmering on the water. Couldn t be any better!!

Editor s Note Volunteer Signup for the Leesburg BikeFest, Friday, April 28th through Sunday, April 30th begins soon. Look for the announcement for signups to begin for BikeFest. We shall have website signups, as well as signup sheets at our next membership meeting on April 8th. Gator bucks will be awarded for participation to help out with Parking and Security at Gator H-D Carolynn Bayne, Volunteer Coordinator What are two blondes doing in front of a motorcycle? Arguing about who gets the window seat A young man walked into our insurance office to purchase coverage for his new motorcycle. Only one question confused him. "Do you have a lien holder on the vehicle?""i've got a kickstand," the prospect replied. "Is that the same thing? What's the difference between a vacuum cleaner and a motorcycle? A motorcycle can hold two dirt bags. Our next LOH/GNO meeting will be on April 11th at Francesco s Italian Ristorante, in Summerfield, at 6:30 PM. If you did not sign up at the meeting send me an email, or sign up at our April Chapter meeting. The theme for the night is Easter. Can t wait to see what attire you ladies will come up with. I registered for the International Female Motorcycle Rider Day. If you are attending this event don t forget to add Lake County H.O.G. as your Chapter. The group with the largest amount of participants will win $1000. The event will be held on May 6, 2017. Visit the web site at www.roadqueenusa.org Luz Temple, Ladies of Harley

CORNER In my two plus years here, I am so amazed, pleased and excited with the Lake County H.O.G. member rider participation in our Chapters sanctioned rides. The increase has been phenomenal with us averaging between 36-40 members riding during our peak months, often requiring two or more groups, make me realize how much we need more volunteer Road Captains willing to take up the responsibility of planning and pre-riding routes with everything evolving, emphasized and directed toward safety for everyone. If you have the interest in helping our Chapter, I welcome and encourage you to offer your talents and services for the benefit of all. Back in October 2016, Clermont H.O.G invited Lake County members to participate in our first interchapter ride to tour the USS Yorktown Aircraft carrier in Charleston, SC and we recently reciprocated by hosting the Florida Caverns weekend ride which was again well received and not just a meal destination (although we are guilty of that being a top planning priority) but rather for the uniqueness and event adventure experience. We anticipate our continuing of these interchapter adventures, most likely at 4-6 month intervals, and hope you might decide to join and participate on some of them with us. As a riding chapter, each time you sign-in your ride miles are recorded for posterity and further distinguished by both weekend and Wednesday rides. These combined 65,185 mile totals reinforce that we are indeed an active riding chapter as evidenced by: 28,730 January miles 11,750 February miles 24,705 March miles (only thru 3/22 as of this writing!) Here s wishing everyone a healthy and even better 2017 year of riding start your engines Nic Talantis, Head Road Captain
