HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION CHERRY HILL SCHOOL MEETING MINUTES OF August 2, 2017 Roll Call: Members Present: Dave Curtis, Steve Foley, Kathy Martin, Elizabeth Dornik (Arrived 7:15 pm)-(historical Society), Darrin Silvester, Ralph Welton Member Absent: Terry Bennett, Melissa McLaughlin Staff Present: Gregg King, Joan Lager Call to Order: Commissioner Foley called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Approval of Agenda: Motion by Welton, supported by Foley to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried by all members present. Approval of Minutes: Motion by Martin, supported by Foley to approve the minutes of the April 5, 2017 HDC Meeting. Motion carried by all members present. Motion by Martin, supported by Silvester to approve the minutes of the June 8, 2017 Special HDC Meeting. Motion carried by all members present. Committee Reports - Historical Society: Ms. Martin reported the new exhibit at the Museum has been well received. They had a couple of hundred visitors go through it. The Strategic Planning Committee will be meeting in the fall to set Long-Term goals for the Society. The Society is planning a Fall Harvest Tea on Saturday September 23 rd. Mr. Curtis reported the Rally on Ridge was well attended and brought over 550 people through the barn and exhibits at Preservation Park. Mr. Curtis presented the commission with a large amount documents from the estate of Ms. Ruth Wyles. These contained minutes and other Historic District Documents. Mr. King will go through them and add them to the HDC archives. August 2, 2017 1
Building & Grounds: Sheldon School: Replacement of the damaged brick and the decking and ramps at the rear of the building has been completed. All are invited to top by to see the great work the mason did with the bricks. They preserved and reused as many of the original bricks as possible and incorporated them back into the wall. Mr. King will also be looking into replacing the front doors of the school. Once renovations/repairs are complete, the building will temporarily store the old/obsolete election equipment from the Township Clerk s Office until a determination can be made as to how this equipment will be disposed of. There are several uses for the school under consideration by Canton Leisure Services. Cherry Hill School: Plans to re-stucco the School have been cancelled as the money ($100,000) has been pulled. See New Business Item IV for additional work to be done at Cherry Hill School. Bartlett-Travis House: The front porch steps, at the corner closest to the road, will be repaired/replaced. Also some of the face brick will be repaired. Education: Nothing to report Development: Nothing to report Legal: Nothing to report Staff Report: See Building and Grounds Old Business: I. Sheldon School/Interior and Exterior Maintenance Covered in Building and Grounds Report. II. Certificate of Appropriateness Outcome 50015 Cherry Hill Road Applicant/Builder Gino DiGiandomenico Orlando Builders. New Business: I. 2017 B-4 Preparation 8th Annual Beer, Brats, and Bands at the Barn. Saturday Sep 9, 2017 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Mr. King reported that plans are well under way for this well received annual event. There will be a new addition Ypsi Alehouse will be joining Canton Brew Works and Liberty Street as the breweries serving at this year s event. II. Sheldon School Usage The Township Clerk will be storing the old grey ballot bins as well as August 2, 2017 2
III. Knudt Jorgensen House 51262 Cherry Hill There is a new owner of this 62 acre parcel. The attorney for the new owner has contacted Mr. King regarding regulations of this historic district parcel. Mr. King explained alterations to the actual structure(s) on the parcel would be subject to HDC approval and would require Certificate of Appropriateness. Ms. Lager will verify with Canton Municipal Services Department regarding how departments know a Certificate of Appropriateness is necessary. IV. Maintenance issues Cherry Hill School Mr. King stated the slabs at the front door as well as the rooftop air-conditioning unit Cherry Hill School are in need of replacement. These projects will be completed in 2017. Additional topics: Mr. King has received a copy of the letter sent to Supervisor Williams by the Michigan state Housing Development Authority Michigan State Historic Preservation Office congratulating Canton on our participation in the Certified Local Government Program. Ms. Lager will email a copy of this letter to each member of the HDC by Friday August 4, 2017. A copy of this letter is attached.
