Action on Stroke Month Newsletter 7: July 2015 You re amazing! Thanks to you, this has been our biggest and most successful Action on Stroke Month. Over 400, fun-filled Action on Stroke Month 2015 events took place to Make May Purple. This edition of our newsletter is dedicated to showcasing some of your incredible efforts. England We transformed the English coastline, from Gateshead to Portsmouth, by lighting up some of the country s most recognisable buildings in purple The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Mount Orgueil Castle and Victoria Hall College in Jersey and the stunning Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth were some of the iconic buildings to get the purple treatment. Jon Barrick, Chief Executive at the Stroke Association, said: We re delighted and privileged to have so many dedicated supporters who are passionate about working together to conquer stroke. Scotland Action on Stroke Month 2015 got off to a flying a start with the Royal Botanical Gardens and Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh Planting it Purple with a gorgeous purple flower display. The iconic SSE Hydro building in Glasgow was bathed in a beautiful purple glow to mark its support for the month. TV presenter Dr James Logan put his best foot forward in the Edinburgh half marathon and all over Scotland schools, nurseries, swimming pools and restaurants went purple to raise funds for people affected by stroke. Stroke clubs also made special Bake it Purple cakes and the intrepid people of Glasgow took part in the adrenaline-filled Big Swing event. Angie Macleod, Communications Manager at the Stroke Association in Scotland, said: It was exciting to see the people of Scotland coming together in Action on Stroke Month. People who have had a stroke, their families, carers and many other supporters embraced the Make May Purple theme to raise vital funds for our life-changing work. Thank you to everyone who helped us to make it the best event yet. It s going to be a hard act to follow in 2016!
Northern Ireland So many special events took place throughout Northern Ireland. We had information days, ensuring people could find out more about stroke, and Step Out for Stroke events that raised nearly 3,000 for the charity. We also offered free blood pressure checks at the actionpacked Balmoral Show one of the biggest events in the agricultural calendar. Tom Richardson, Northern Ireland Director at the Stroke Association, said: We re extremely grateful to the people of Northern Ireland for their tremendous support during Action on Stroke Month. Their dedication and commitment to helping those affected by stroke knows no bounds. Thanks to them, we re able to fund the latest research into stroke and can give stroke survivors, and their families, the best possible support.
Wales Staff and volunteers took up the Make May Purple challenge by visiting some the most iconic statutes and landmarks in Cardiff for special purplethemed photoshoots. The month was also given an artistic flavour, as people held special Paint it Purple art exhibitions in Cardiff and Denbigh. Ana Palazon, Director Cymru, Stroke Association Wales said: The passion and enthusiasm of the people of Wales electrified this year s Action on Stroke Month. So many people came together to make it their personal mission to raise awareness of stroke. Their generosity of spirit shown throughout the month is nothing short of breathtaking. In Bridgend and The Mumbles, over 460 people donned their walking shoes for our Step out for Stroke events, raising 6,130 to support our work to conquer stroke.
