Aconi - Sydney Mines - North Sydney HAPPY LABOR DAY EVERYBODY! As we approach the upcoming Labor Day weekend, let us pause to honor all the laborers on Cape Breton Island who toil each day to make our lives better. Labor Day has always been celebrated with great enthusiasm, not just for the day off from work or school but to really honor the progress workers have made in Cape Breton industry. Elsewhere in this issue we have a Labor Day Quiz and it explores some of the major gains that workers have made in Canada, and right here in Cape Breton with the support of local labor leaders and organizations. For the many workers in the early years of coal mining, steelmaking and building trades, workers often had to fight management to make their working environment safe and to earn a wage that would be fair for the work performed. On this weekend we would like to salute the many hard working men and women in Cape Breton who daily make life easier for all of us - Happy Labor Day. This precaution is often overlooked but if you lose one, it will help protect your data and if people can t use it, it will more likely be turned in. 2 - Back up your files. Especially critical ones like projects and notes. This precaution is often overlooked. 3 - Secure your wireless router. This helps prevent other from using your bandwidth but it also protects your information from being seen by others. 4 - Encrypt your Laptop - Most people have a login password but the data on the hard drive is often unprotected and especially banking and financial information are often left unencrypted. if you lose your laptop or it is stoen, this information is very lucrative to thieves and it leaves you open for identity theft and banking fraud. 5 - Keep Facebook information secure. Many people, especially new students at a new school, often forget that there may be others in the student population that are not trustworthy. Keep personal information secure and also you may think it s funny to post some of those Frosh Week party pictures on your Facebook page but your future employers may not see them in the same light. Assume that your Facebook page is open to the public. PAGE 4 OZZY OSBOURNE Speak of the Devil-Live (EagleRock) - In January of this year I wrote a review for the new rockumentary DVD God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, in which Ozzy spoke in detail about the tragic death of Randy Rhoads, and how it still affects him to this day. This new DVD is a restored and remastered version (DTS and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound audio) of the concert taped on June 12, 1982 in California, just a few months after Randy s passing. Ozzy witnessed firsthand the plane crash that killed Randy, and the horror and shock of it all put Ozzy in a deep depression. The band was in the middle of the Diary of a Madman tour at the time, and things were put on hold for a few months, but you would never know that by watching this return to the tour DVD. Ozzy is totally over the top on stage, a whirling dervish of raw rock and roll mayhem. Backed up by Don Airey on keyboards, Rudy Sarzo on bass, Tommy Aldridge on drums and Brad Gillis on lead guitar (Randy s replacement-if that could ever be possible) Ozzy hits the stage in dramatic fashion starting the concert off with the song Over the Mountain and never looks back. This is classic heavy metal at its best, featuring sets, props and effects that epitomize 1980 s era heavy metal and all its excesses. For the next hour plus you get to see and hear classic Ozzy tracks such as Mr. Crowley, Suicide Solution, Goodbye To Romance, Believer and of course the By Paul Power unmatchable Crazy Train. Not to forget his humble beginnings, Ozzy and band also launch into the classic Black Sabbath songs Iron Man, Children Of The Grave and a blistering version of Paranoid, which puts Brad Gillis in the spotlight with his sizzling guitar licks. As I mentioned above, no one could ever replace Randy Rhoads, but Brad filled in very nicely on this tour, and went on to be a key member of the band Night Ranger (remember them?). There are also some other songs from Ozzy s first 2 solo albums performed here (there s a grand total of 14 tracks on the DVD, counting the guitar and drum solo), all of which are molten metal scorchers. Throughout Ozzy s career he has been held up as a poster boy by right-wing religious zealots as an example of satanic and dark forces in music; well, this concert is hotter than hell and it s clear that the audience had one devil of a good time that night. To his critics, it may seem like an oxymoron to say this, but here it goes, God bless Ozzy Osbourne, this DVD is truly wicked. Branch 008 - Sydney Mines Legion Notes DECORATION DAY - In the past years, Branch 008 celebrated Decoration day and it was held on the 4th Sunday in September. This year it will fall on September 30th. Every year a Service is held at each graveyard in town. Branch 008 erected a monumen at each graveyard back in 1982 and 1983. Veterans, Members and Guests parade to each graveyard, a different one each year. They hold a service with a Guest Speaker to honor our Fallen Heroes. We have many great Heroes who have passed on and many great stories that never get the chance to be told. Our Veterans are our unsung heroes today and every day! Every year we lose more and more Veterans. Our WW2 War Veterans average 85 to 95 years of age. Our new Veterans we welcome with open arms for you will be our Veterans to the young and tell them your stories of the great acts you have done to help our Nation become a better place to live. We have Veterans that have returned home from places outside Canada and cannot cope with the life of being home. Some may live on the street. Some are too scared to receive our help. You may know these people. Let s try and help these Veterans and direct them to the Branch and we can help with our Service Officer and give them the help that is needed to fight back and put your family and community first. We should be proud of them - We Remember Them! Nova Scotia Nunavet Command has started a program to help these Vets and direct them to help that they badly need. We are here to help! PAGE 12 Run For The Cure - Sept. 30th The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada's largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs. It was founded by a small group of volunteers who wanted to raise awareness and funds for the breast cancer cause. The Run for the Cure has made great strides since then, while staying true to grassroots and our volunteer founders vision. Last year, Canadians united to raise over $30 million in the 2011 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. The fundraising efforts and volunteer support of over 170,000 annual participants allows the Foundation to continue funding groundbreaking research, education, awareness and advocacy initiatives. This overwhelming support reached international soil in 2011 to include the first international Run site, in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is extremely grateful for this support and is honoured to be entrusted by the nation to continue to lead the way towards our vision of creating a future without breast cancer.
