R.I. President: BARRY RASSIN (Ester) District Governor - 9500: The official publication of the ROTARY CLUB of KIDMAN PARK INC. PO Box 83, Brooklyn Park SA 5032. Meetings: 6.30 pm Tuesdays West Beach Surf Life Saving Club, Seaview Road (end of West Beach Road). Partners and guests are welcome to join our regular weekly dinner meetings. LAST WEEK S GUEST SPEAKER, GRANT LOCK Grant had a fascinating story to tell of the 24 years he and his wife, Janna, spent living and working in the Taliban region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. It was inspiring to learn how a successful farmer and breeder of prize winning cattle from Kimba, motivated initially by Janna s desire to make a difference, became the Deputy Executive Director of one of the largest NGOs in the region. Grant was involved in a diversity of areas including improving eye-care and education. Janna s work included mentoring widows, who came to appreciatively call her Frishta (Angel). CLUB NEWS: PRESIDENT ROB CHAMBER S DESK From The President in Vienna Someone has to do this, so it might as well be me. All good here as you can see. Great idea to support Seaton High kids (or anyone else) to participate in the "River Murray Youth Forum". Many thanks to Robert Ryan and Tom Bunnik for taking a place on the organising committee for the Rotary Image Day on Sunday Oct 7. This is the best opportunity our club has ever had to tell the public what we do and how we do it. Over the years, Rotary has been reluctant to brag about our work and projects, big or small - a mistake in hindsight. Our biggest achievement, "Ending Polio", is being celebrated worldwide in October. When this project started in the early 1980's over 400,000 new cases occurred every year (mostly paralysing children). After 10 billion doses have been administered by 1 million volunteers, and over $4.5 billion raised mainly by Rotary, only a hand-full of cases remain. The original estimated in 1980 was $2 billion. After 3 years of no new cases the disease will be considered as wiped out and only the second disease (after Smallpox) to be eradicated. I hope all of you will take the opportunity to participate in our event on Sunday October 7. Just a few hours will make all the difference and show the public why you joined Rotary in the first place. Thank you for your support. From President Rob 3

CLUB NEWS: CATCH-UP IN CARDIFF While recently in Cardiff, Ed & Sheena had the pleasure of catching up with Steve Best, who led the Group Study Exchange Team from Wales that was hosted by Kidman Park in 2009 together with his wife Janet and team member Katherine over a delightfully slow dinner. Unfortunately two of the other team members were away on holidays and the third had work commitments. Steve and Katherine particularly asked to be remembered to their Kidman Park friends and noted that every year since they were in South Australia, they have had visits from Rotarian connections from District 9500! The Joker Draw Peter Murton had the winning ticket and won $58.00, but did NOT select the Joker Card. The Jackpot is now $1852.00!!!! POLICE CLEARANCE FOR ROTARIANS. Have you completed/updated yours yet? Rotary District 9500 requires all Rotarians and their partners who participate in projects with at risk individuals/ groups to have a Police Clearance. 1) Contact Megan Kerr for an application if you need one. 2) Have President Rob Chambers sign your completed form. Kindly supplied by Ed King. 3) Lodge the application at a police station. Bring your passport, driver s license, Medicare card etc for the 100 points ID check.
