Colorado El Paso County History 12 here are many things neat about the state of Colorado. It T became a state 100 years after signing the Declaration of Independence, which gives it it s name of the Centennial (100th year) State. It resembles a perfect rectangle on any map, being 387 miles long from east to west, and 276 miles long from north to south. It is referred to as one of the Rocky Mountain states, because more than half of the state is rugged and mountainous, with over 1,000 peaks above 10,000 feet high. Marking the western edge of the Great Plains is eastern Colorado. In and around Denver, most of the population resides. Denver is not only the state capital, but is also the largest city of the Great Plains. Lying one mile above sea level, it still has the highest level of elevation in the nation. As does the Rio Grande, the Colorado, which is the major river in the western United States, has its source in the state. Colorado is truly one of the most breath-taking states in beauty, because of the towering mountains, mighty rivers and sprawling plains. Tourism is becoming a major industry, with skiers visiting Vail and Aspen in the winter. Colorado s other source of income is a variety of mineral wealth; gold, silver, copper, zinc, manganese, molybedenum, coal, lead and uranium. Forming part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 is eastern Colorado. Much of the remaining state comes from territory that was handed over by Mexico after the Mexican War in 1848. Nearby the Maroon Bell Mountains, is one of the world s most famous ski resorts, Aspen. Aspen is also home to a well-known environmental center. In northern Colorado, the Rocky Mountain National Park has more than 100 peaks over 10,000 feet high. State Symbols Blue Spruce Lark Bunting Rocky Mountain Colombine In July 1858, gold was discovered along the South Platte River in Arapahoe County, Kansas Territory. This discovery precipitated the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. Many residents of the mining region felt disconnected from the remote territorial governments of Kansas and Nebraska, so they voted to form their own Territory of Jefferson on October 24, 1859. The following month, the Jefferson Territorial Legislature organized 12 counties for the new territory including El Paso County. El Paso County was named for the Spanish language name for Ute Pass north of Pikes Peak. Colorado City served as the county seat of El Paso County. The Jefferson Territory never received federal sanction, but on February 28, 1861, U.S. President James Buchanan signed an act organizing the Territory of Colorado. El Paso County was one of the original 17 counties created by the Colorado legislature on November 1, 1861. Part of its western territory was broken off to create Teller County in 1899. Originally based in Old Colorado City (now part of Colorado Springs, not today's Colorado City between Pueblo and Walsenburg), El Paso County's county seat was moved to Colorado Springs in 1873. 13

Reduce Ṙeuse. Recycle. Americans throw away 25,000,000 plastic bottles every hour The average person generates over 4 pounds of trash every day and about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year. Over 75% of waste is recyclable, but we only recycle about 30% of it. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to listen to a full album on your ipod. Recycling 100 cans could light your bedroom for two whole weeks. 22 23
