Year 9 Outdoor Education Week 5 9 or 12 16 September 5 August 2016 The Year 9 Outdoor Education program aims to extend students from their Year 8 experience. It also has clear links with the Year 10 Tassie Icon Outdoor Program, Health Curriculum and Connections Program. All students have received an email informing them of the program they will be attending. It is important that time is taken by families to discuss the program, family logisitcs and equipment arrangements for each student.. Staff School staff and experienced outdoor guides will work with your child. Planning Timeline 19 August CareMonkey details and forms are complete. 19 August Equipment loan request forms are completed on the Google form. 29 August Week One camp group can borrow equipment from the store at school. Key times and location Monday 5 or 12 September, 8.40am 3.30pm ; A planning gear check and introductory day. Students bring all equipment for a gear check and to use during the day. The equipment may be left on site over night. It is important students note where they need to be; Rafters and Sea Kayakers Boat Club, 1 Lallaby Road, New Town Bay. Mountain Bikers Outdoor Store, Bell Street Sports Ground. Frenchmans and Three Capes Walk Cricket Pavilion, Bell Street Sports Ground. Tuesday 6 or 13 September : All programs leave from Bell Street Sports Ground. 8am Mountain Bikers, Rafters and Frenchmans Cap groups. 8.30am Sea Kayakers and Three Capes Walk. Friday 9 or 16 September. All programs end at 3.30pm at Bell Street Sports Ground. Program intent Bushwalking Three Capes Track : Complete the latest Great Walk of Tasmania. Start at Eaglehawk Neck and walk to Cape Pillar which includes the tallest ocean cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere. Visit Cape Hauy, the Totem Pole, and the Moai on the way.
Bushwalking Frenchmans Cap : After a stunning approach to the Mountains the group will be camped adjacent to Tasmania's second tallest cliff. Views from the peak extend across South West Tasmania and out to sea. A possible side trip to the swirling Irenabys on the Franklin River may complete the program. Mountain Biking Derby : Millions of dollars have been invested in this international standard mountain biking venue. This program is suited to all riding abilities. The trails flow and glide creating a natural roller coaster through the forests. Sea kayaking The Channel : Camp on tucked away islands, pull into 150 year old hand carved ports and when possible use the wind to carry the group to the next destination. Rafting Huon and Picton Rivers: Load boats with camping equipment then use gravity and skill to travel down stream. The more challenging Picton River may be approached if conditions suit. Notes on equipment: Families should not buy a lot of fancy and expensive equipment. It is important to check the equipment lists below, then it is suggested that students try to borrow equipment from friends and family. If there is still a need to borrow equipment then it is important that students have listed this on the Year 9 Outdoor Education Equipment Request Google form. All school equipment is due back on the Friday of the camp. Medical considerations and personal medication It is imperative that students carry personal medication with them at all times. Written directions for the medication must be provided on CareMonkey. Food It is important that students bring nourishing food and one litre of water. A balanced portion of chocolate and lollies may be bought. A possible food list has been emailed to all students. Cancelling and modifying program If factors warrant, the program may be altered or cancelled. Lyn Johnston as Co Head of High School will be informed.
