So we arrived at our first meeting not knowing what the Salisbury HOG Chapter was all about! It didn t take Tommy and me long to figure out that we wanted to be a part of the Chapter and we joined in the Spring of 2005. Since that time Tommy has served as Director (two years), a Road Captain, and now Head Road Captain. I have served as Newsletter Editor (two years), Assistant Director, LOH Director, and now Chapter Director. I have enjoyed every moment but now it is time for someone else to take the reins. In less than two months, it will be time to elect our new Chapter Officers for 2014!!! If you are interested in becoming Director or an Officer for 2014, let your desires be heard!! Nominations will take place in October and elections in November. Be sure to check out the Activities Calendar on our website as we have lots going on in the next few months: dinner rides, Chapter meetings, overnight rides, Biker Blues and BBQ (be sure to sign up as a volunteer), Chapter Picnic, Chili Cook-off and more!! Come on out and join us we have lots of fun. It won t take you long to figure out that you, too, want to be a part of the Salisbury HOG Chapter!! WE ROCK!! Thanks for all you do for the Salisbury HOG chapter! -Deb Mason SALISBURY HOG MEETING TIMES: Next Chapter Meeting: Road Captain Meeting: Ladies of Harley Meeting: September 17, 2013 6:30 pm September 24, 2013 6:30 pm September 24, 2013 at 6:30 pm All meetings will held in Tilley s HOG Room unless otherwise noted.

Safety Director Message: Well, I don't know about everyone else, but this has been the wettest summer I can recall. With that said, it would be a good idea to review some safety tips for wet roads and rainy weather. Painted surfaces on roads, like crosswalks, jump out as one thing to be aware of. These spots are particularly slick for a bike where a car doesn't have to think twice about driving over them. The best approach is to ride across them as straight as possible. Excessive lean angle can cause the rider to find themselves sliding alongside of their bike on the surface of the road. Another hazard to keep an eye out for are potholes. The amount of rain as we have had this year has resulted in a population explosion of this form of road gremlin. Your bell is working overtime trying to keep these at bay. The left position in your lane is normally the best since potholes and broken pavement seem to prefer living on the edge or center of the road. Keep a sharp eye out for these gotchas. Rain brings with it poor visibility. There are a couple of items that help here. Raingear is an item that most riders are very well acquainted with this year. Most raingear comes with reflective markings. This greatly increases the ability for cars to see you. Bright orange is another plus when it comes to being seen. If it's raining so hard that you can't clearly see, it is best to pull off the road and wait it out. After all, we generally ride for the enjoyment and are not normally in a rush to arrive at our destination. Speed can be a big factor as well. Make sure you're riding at speeds that are safe for the conditions. Rain slick roads can be hazardous, and hydroplaning on two wheels is not anyone's idea of a good time. Do not let the wet weather get you down. Time your rides around the storms and get out there and enjoy the best thing going. RIDE and be safe doing it! Just a reminder: Rider Skills Classes If you have taken the Rider s Edge courses that Kristy Dell operates, this would be an excellent supplement to that training. If you ride 2-up most of the time, as we do, take your passenger as well. It would make the assessment more in-line with the way you ride and they encourage that. Following is the link to sign up for the course: http://www.bikesafenc.com/calendar.lasso September Safety Tip: Look Twice. Motorcyclists: Look twice is still a good rule to follow. Never assume that a driver sees you. Ride defensively and take responsibility for staying safe around cars. Car Drivers: Look for motorcycles. Motorcycles are small and tough to see. That means many drivers miss them, causing collisions that are often fatal to the motorcycle rider. Be safe and RIDE HOGS RIDE! ~~~Michael Garriott (msgarriott@gmail.com) Salisbury HOG Tilley HD Salisbury

Assistant Director Message: It has been brought to my attention that legislators in the U.S. House of Representatives have been talking about passing a law that would mandate motorcycle check points on highways. There are those who feel that bikers should not be allowed on OUR interstate highway system. They do not seem to understand that we are much more aware of safety than your average car driver. We do not text while riding. We do not watch DVD's while riding. We do not even eat while riding (well, maybe Grant Eagle does). We are constantly scanning for possible problems. We yield to cars and trucks because we know they can hurt us. Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner has filed a bill (HR1861) to prohibit the federal funding of motorcycle only roadside checkpoints. Please contact your sitting member of the House and ask them to cosponsor and/or support this bill. The U.S. Capitol switchboard number is 202.224.3121. Lets all have fun, ride our butts off and be CAREFUL. Dave Carman Road Captain Message: I hope you all are well and getting to ride as much as you want to. Riding safe is a constant and consistent work in progress. Riding skills are the same whether you are alone or with a group. The one thing to remember is be alert, be aware of your surroundings, and watch what other vehicle operators are doing. People who do not ride do not know how we as riders operate and many times do not know how we navigate. They think we can stop on a dime, and do not realize that we need our space just like any other motor vehicle. Please always use your electric and hand signals whenever possible. Ride safe and I look forward to seeing you on our rides. We still need additional road captains and I would be glad to talk with any of you about helping us to keep everyone safe. Again, if you ever have any questions or suggestions, do not hesitate to contact me at: goodhousekeeper@hotmail.com. Tommy Mason, Lead Road Captain www.tilleyhdofsalisbury.com

Ladies of Harley: As the year winds down, the Ladies of Harley still have a lot of events going on! Please remember to check the Calendar of Events located in this newsletter or on the Salisbury Hog website. In October we will be hosting our annual Pink Pancakes for the Cure. More information will be forthcoming soon, but mark your calendars now to join us Saturday, October 12, 2013. Volunteers are still needed for this event! Also, please try and join us for the ride to the Statesville Hot Air Balloon Festival on Saturday, October 19, 2013. This should be an awesome event! We appreciate all you do in your support of the Ladies of Harley! Jayne and Vickie. Maggie Valley 2013 Everyone had an awesome time in Maggie Valley. Here are a few memories! Gary Rally Information: The 3rd annual 2013 Tilley Harley-Davidson Biker Blues BBQ Rally will be held at Tilley Harley-Davidson, on Friday & Saturday, September 20 and 21, 2013. This family oriented event is a Biker Blues BBQ Rally combined with a Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned BBQ Classic. This event will bring together sponsors, vendors, first class entertainment, the general public, and motorcycle enthusiasts for an admission-free event. We are expecting the 2013 event to be bigger and better than any event ever held in Rowan County and Salisbury. We also anticipate this event to become one of the largest Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned events in the Southeastern United States. Our event quickly became recognized as a premier KCBS event and our Grand Champions in 2011 and 2012 have been invited to participate in the American Royal World Series of Barbecue in Kansas City MO. Not only will we host this event free to the general public, our goal is to have proceeds going to our event charities. For more information on the event or vendor opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact Gary Moss at info@bikerbluesbbqrally.com or by phone at 704-638-6044. We invite you to visit our website: www.bikerbluesbbqrally.com for event information and photos.
