Panama the centre of the world! Where do two big continents and two great oceans meet, only divided by a narrow strip of land? We will give you a clue! What is the most famous canal of the world? Well, by now you must have guessed it! Yes, indeed, it is PANAMA, where the North and South American continents meet and where the Atlantic and Pacific are connected by the Eight wonder of the World, the Panama Canal! The Panama Canal still going strong When the Spanish conquistador Balboa managed to cross the Central American Isthmus in 1513, he was the first European who discovered the biggest ocean of the world, the Pacific Ocean. A dream was born to build a canal connecting the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans. However it took over 400 hundred years of enormous efforts to make the dream come true. The Panama Canal was inaugurated in 1914, being then the greatest technical achievement ever made by mankind. The very same canal is still operating today being the most important waterway in the world, with more than 12000 yearly transits. A third lane is now under construction which will guarantee a growth of the traffic for years to come. For anybody visiting Panama a cruise through the locks of the canal is a more than a must, it is a life time experience! Panama City three cities in one. Panama City was the first city founded by white men on shores of the Pacific and is today a super sight of many dimensions. The ruin city, Panama Viejo was destroyed in 1670 by the British pirate Captain Morgan, where after the city was rebuild on a nearby peninsula which was easier to defend. This beautiful city, with many churches and palaces is now called Casco Viejo and has been surrounded by the modern fast expanding business city. Due to its fast expansion Panama City has been called the Monaco of Americas with over 100 foreign banks and an ever increasing amount of luxurious skyscrapers painting the skyline. The Jungle closer than You would believe Panama has wild nature and wilderness beyond reach and according to statistics 44 % of the country is still covered by forest. Drive only half an hour out of Panama City and You are actually in the middle of the rainforest. The Darién jungle was impossible to penetrate even for the though builders of the great American Highway and they were forced to give up facing the depth of the jungle and the steep mountains. Therefore it is no surprise that Panama is, according to UN statistics, the fourth richest land in the world when it comes to plant varieties and species. Also the fauna is very rich, making Panama a future paradise for all kinds of ECO travel. This has already been discovered by ornithologists from all over the world who are coming to Panama trying to spot as many as possible of the almost 1000 bird species inhabiting the country. The Islands the virgin paradise The archipelagos of Panama are unique! On the Pacific Ocean the Pearl Island group, earlier inhabited by brave pearl divers and ruthless pirates, is now every summer visited by the great Humpback whales. They come in hundreds in July with their newborn babies and stay in the area until they feel strong enough to face the challenges of the ocean. On the Atlantic side you can find the pristine Bocas del Toro area, virgin islands with endless beaches that are superb for swimming and snorkelling. Living Indian culture Also located on the Atlantic side is the amazing San Blas Islands, a group of more than 400 islands of which 48 are inhabited by the proud Kuna Indians. This is Kuna Yala territory, an autonomous Indian nation with more than 40000 people who are world famous for their Mola art, a handicraft that has been carried forward for generations by the skilful Kuna women, who still wear their beautiful native clothing. In Panama there are seven different Indian tribes and cultures, all with their own languages and rich cultural traditions. Some of the tribes live on the islands, others along the rivers deep in the jungle and some up in the mountains, all trying to preserve their unique and distinctive lifestyles! The Indian culture and heritage truly adds an extra distinctive flavour to everyday life in Panama.

The mighty Volcán Baru The mountains and the valleys of Panama are of great beauty. The highlands begin in the province of Coclé, west of Panama City, reaching all the way to Chiriquí on the Costa Rican border. From the heights of the mighty Volcán Baru, 3478 meters, you can on a clear day see both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Here you will also find the beautiful valley of Cerro Punta that provides Panama with all its vegetables and fruits. Not far away on the other side of the Volcán Baru lies the picturesque flower city of Boquete, famous for its lovely parks and huge coffee plantations. Here in the highlands the climate is superb, a steady 20 25 degrees all year round, making it a favourite area for foreigners looking for a safe an healthy place to retire! Beaches for everyone When it comes to beautiful beaches, Panama has a lot to offer, having two ocean coasts, the Atlantic and the Pacific, with more than a thousand kilometres of shores each. The most developed is the Costa Blanca area, with huge all inclusive resorts and superb recreation areas as golf- and riding clubs. Also lovely are the almost deserted island beaches of Islas Perlas and Bocas del Toro. The water temperature being pleasant with +25 degrees it offers you a lovely opportunity for water sports and games such as sailing and surfing, swimming and snorkelling. Sports and recreation The deep-sea fishing is superb and Panama now holds several biggest catch world records. Also be prepared for some world class diving in the region of Island Coiba a natural reserve on the Pacific side. Back on the shore, golf is very popular with several excellent golf courses designed by American specialists. For back to nature tourists, the trekking and riding offers exciting possibilities and in the mountains canopy is popular and rafting is wild in the rivers. Entertainment Panama is rich in entertainment! No where else than in Las Vegas are there so many casinos open 24 hours per day. The folkloric tradition with lovely costumes and native music is featured in the yearly carnivals in February, such a huge celebration that all other business in Panama closes down for a whole week. The Panamanians are fun loving people who don t mind a party even in the middle of the week. In Panama City there are numerous pubs, bars, discos and nightclubs, which provide fun and amusement teams until the early morning hours and in the resorts on the beach and islands the entertainment is provided by the enthusiastic hotel action team who never seem to sleep. The people The Panamanians are friendly people with Spanish, French, North American and Asian background, mixed with the original Indian roots. They are very proud of their independence and treat foreigners, especially those from overseas, with a friendly curiosity. In Panama the old and new life styles mix in a very special way, ultramodern technology meets with ancient Indian tradition. Panama is a safe country to visit with high-tech communications and a good infrastructure. Here you can watch the sun rise in the Atlantic and see it set in the Pacific on the very same day. That is why there is a saying: The world meets in Panama! Food and shopping Food in Panama is a pleasant surprise, with various food styles of the world being offered, especially in Panama City. The service in the restaurants is friendly and professional and the food is excellent, covering all international cuisines, accompanied with an excellent choice of wine and spirits. Best restaurants are found in Bella Vista and Casco Viejo districts of Panama City. Shopping opportunities are incredible, all leading boutique brands being available in huge ultra modern shopping malls but also big department stores with low price profile. Best of all, due to the present exchange rate of the dollar the prices are attractive. If you want to buy in bigger quantities, just head for the Colon tax free zone on the Atlantic side. At the same time you can visit nearby Portobello, Panamas oldest town, founded by Columbus himself in 1502, famous for its fortresses and the black Christ.

Panama City Fast growing Panama City has a population of approximately 1.000.000. It was the first city founded by white men on shores on the Pacific Ocean and is today called the Monaco of the Americas a city of many dimensions. The capital of Panama is a curious blend of old Spain, modern America and the market atmosphere of the East. The old town of the city, Casco Viejo, with its narrow, cobble stoned streets and colonial buildings, has most of the interesting sights and is also the culture centre, with many magnificent churches, theatres and museums. The best way to discover Casco Viejo is by foot. Start from the Plaza de Francia, stroll the famous city wall walk Paseo las Bóvedas, pass by the magnificent national theatre into the Simon Bolivar square with the impressive San Franciscus Cathedral. Continue a few blocks to Independence Square with the impressive Canal museum. Don t miss the nearby San José church with its splendid golden Baroque altar and try to end up admiring the presidents palace overlooking the bay. You might easily spend a whole day here, still wanting to come back the next day. Another truly worthwhile excursion is a visit to Panama Viejo, the ruin town, sacked and burned by Captain Morgan in 1670. The fascinating historical ruins are spread over a wide area and very photogenic, including the landmark of the city, the newly restored bell tower of the old cathedral. The nearby Indian market is the best in town which also goes for the historical museum situated by the entrance to the ruin town. However what is really striking to any visitor is the tremendous Panama City skyline with its luxurious skyscrapers. They really reflect the heart of the Panama's prosperity and growth, the business-city with hundreds of foreign banks, insurance and investment companies all competing for quick money to be made! Luckily enough the restaurant district Bella Vista has so far been saved from over development and offers a tranquil and charming surrounding for some excellent restaurants with a very international menu.

Islands San Blas Islands The San Blas Archipelago lies in the Caribbean Sea on the Atlantic coastline and consists of almost 400 islands of different shapes and sizes, stretching for more than 250 kilometres all the way from Porvenir peninsula to the Columbian border. About 40 of the islands are inhabited by one of the most indigenous Indian civilizations in the Americas, the Kuna Indians who have established their own self ruled territory called Kuna Yala. You can experience the extraordinary beauty of the real Caribbean, white sandy palm islands surrounded by coral reef, framed by the palm lined coast and the jungle cloaked mountains, it all looks very close to paradise. There are no roads into the region, but a regular air service is provided with several daily flights to the different airstrips. Only the Indians themselves are allowed to handle business on the islands so be prepared for a colourful but friendly reception. Try to stay for a few nights to grab the unique atmosphere. The huts provided for accommodation are very cosy, most of them nowadays with running water. The main reason for coming to San Blas is to be acquainted to the Kuna Indians and their lifestyle. They have managed to protect their unique way of life, culture and heritage, being especially famous for their unique Mola handicraft. Islas Perlas (Pearl Islands) Departing from Panama City, a fifteen minute flight takes you to Contadora in the archipelago of Islas Perlas, which earlier was famous for its pearls and pirates. Contadora Island is the fifth largest of the Pearl Islands and the centre of the tourism. The small village of Contadora features two cosy small Inns and two hotels directly on the beach as well as few good restaurants. The Contadora Resort, with colonial styled three floor wooden buildings is situated on Playa Larga, deservingly called the long beach. There are six other nice beaches around the island to explore, which makes one for every day of the week. Although close to Panama City Contadora seems to be an other world, which is probably why it was chosen as the final refugee place for the Shah of Iran. The small village stands in contrast to the luxury villas up hill, were now Julio Iglesias and Oscar de la Renta have their villas. A favourite excursion is island hopping to the nearby deserted islands.
