INTRODUCTION Lesotho is a mountainous, landlocked and completely surrounded by the Republic of South Africa, located at 29030 S 28030 E/29.5000S 28.500 E. It is the only country in the world which lies entirely above 1000 meters from sea level. Its lowest point is at 1400 meters above sea level, the highest lowest point of any country. Its remote and rugged countryside is spectacular and gives the visitor the thrill of discovering the unknown. The serenity of the landscapes lures visitors who enjoy more gentle pursuits. The terrain is perfect for hiking, quad riding and horse riding. Sites of staggering natural splendor await the curious visitor in some remote locations. Reaching those spots is a challenge in itself for many, and nowhere else are off-road sports more fun, grueling, exhilarating and positively addictive than in Lesotho. It has a treasure trove of Bushmen (San) rock art. The country is literally sprinkled with such sites and many of the pictures have important information for historian, depicting traditions, hunting methods and techniques and a way of living that is long forgotten. The wealth of rock art is attributable to the wonderful sandstone formations of the region, where nature has formed cliff overhangs which provided the ideal shelter for early man. It was on the on the walls that the San left us the valuable legacy of their paintings. Lesotho is also home to great engineering projects in dam construction which are also among the biggest dams in Africa. LESOTHO WEATHER WINTER (May to August) Winters are generally dry and cold, and are characterized by the domination of high pressure systems with the resulting clear skies, dry air and warm to moderate temperatures during the day with a sudden cold temperature just after sunset. SUMMER (November to February) Summers are hot and humid due to the proximity of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and Kalahari low-pressure area which draw in land and the moist tropical air masses from the Congo Basin.
