ABA TRAVEL: PERU 2015 1 unusual journey with R. Crusoe & Son Lima. 1886. Dear American Bar Association Members, I want to invite you to join other ABA members on a spectacular visit to Peru where you will experience the richness of both its ancient and modern cultures. Because the trip takes place in early September, it has an extremely limited reservation window. I think you will agree that this is a fabulous opportunity and hope you are able to take advantage of it. Our good friends at R. Crusoe & Son have developed a fascinating journey to Lima, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu. Travelers will meet interesting locals, share in a special private dinner, or pachamanca, and explore ancient Incan settlements all in the good company of fellow ABA members. The travel schedule also allows plenty of free time to relax or further explore on your own the wonders of Peru. This would be the first of many ABA Travel excursions. There are limited spots available for this trip so please register early. Registration closes June 23, 2015. Larry Gill Deputy Executive Director and Chief Revenue Officer ABA Leisure T he Inca master masons, worshippers of the sun, and rulers of Peru. That is, until one particularly heady conquistador rode into town and single-handedly wiped out an entire civilization. Today Peru, gentle South American republic, is a mix of ancient temples and Spanish colonialism. Except in Machu Picchu, where for four centuries or so Inca and Inca alone reached for the sun from a peak 2,000 feet above the rain forest. Come explore the riches of Peru. Study the still mysterious Inca. Acquaint yourself with stories of brash explorers. During our journey, we stay at luxurious hotels, indulge in fine cuisine, and tour with exceptional local guides. Arrive in Lima, Peru s capital city (traveling to South America is easy there s little if any time change, so jetlag isn t an issue). Rest up at the luxurious Miraflores Park Hotel, then we re off to explore the city s colonial architecture. Founded by conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535, Lima was the capital of Spain s South American colony for 300 years. On day 2, beyond the city limits in the town of Villa, we sit down to a private lunch at a hacienda and watch a Paso horse demonstration. Paso is a breed of saddle horse distinguished by a smooth lateral gait. It was bred in Peru specifically for overseers who traveled across plantations. Back in Lima, at the Museo Rafael Larco Herrera 1 ABA Travel 2015 Peru with R. Crusoe & Son 888.490.8007

From above, the Maras salt flats resemble a mammoth mosaic in brown and white. Sacred Valley. we view fine pre-columbian artifacts. On day 3, fly from Lima to Cusco, then drive into Peru s Sacred Valley, heartland of the Inca Empire. In the town of Pisac, peruse the market and view ancient Inca terraces. We will sit down to lunch at Hacienda Huayo Ccari, owned by a well-known Cusco family. Then we participate in a private pachamama, an old Andean ceremony in which a shaman makes offerings of native cereals, grains, fruits, coca leaves, and corn beer to Mother Earth. Our homebase in the Sacred Valley? The lovely Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado, set among verdant fields and towering mountains on the banks of the Urubamba River. Our explorations continue on day 4 at the salt pans of Maras, which span across a hill above the valley. They were created by the Inca during the 1400s. In the town of Chinchero, we will visit the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco, where the director, Nilda Callanaupa, speaks with us about the work done here and its importance to modern-day Peru. Then we head to Ollantaytambo, a living Inca ruin in which today s small population still uses the original Inca fortress and surrounding structures in daily life. Dinner this evening is quite special a private pachamanca, an Andean meal in which meat and vegetables are cooked in an earthen oven set into the ground. After our meal, we are treated to a performance of song and dance by local artists. Traditional weavers in Chinchero show us how it s done. The following morning, we catch the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu, where we have a guided tour. It is believed that this Inca city was abandoned before conquistadors ransacked and conquered Peru. This would explain why it sat undisturbed for hundreds of years before Yale University professor Hiram Bingham discovered the Lost City, virtually untouched, in 1911. Archaeologists and anthropologists theorize that Machu Picchu served as a religious center for the Inca. The complex s grassy central court is surrounded by almost 200 houses, palaces, and temples constructed of dry (mortarless) masonry. Machu Picchu. One of the world s most exquisite archaeological sites, 2,000 feet up in the Andes. 2 ABA Travel 2015 Peru with R. Crusoe & Son 888.490.8007

But perhaps most impressive is the site s setting dramatically perched atop a 2,000-foot high ridge overlooking the Urubamba River. Our hotel at Machu Picchu is the Sanctuary Lodge, a Belmond (formerly known as Orient-Express) property and the only hotel situated right at the entrance to the archaeological site. This means we have easy access to the site from early morning, before other visitors arrive, to late afternoon, when most visitors have left. Take time at the site the next morning. Climb Huayna Picchu, hike to the Sun Gate, or continue exploring the main site. Lima We train back to Cusco for time in this charming city. Our hotel in town is Palacio Nazarenas, another Belmond property, this one on a tranquil plaza. This former palace and convent has emerged from Air travel Land travel years of restoration to become one of the city s most exclusive hotels. Dr. Peter Frost, author and expedition leader, presents a lecture on Inca history on day 7. Then we explore historic Cusco including the Inca Sun Temple, Plaza de Armas, and the colonial cathedral. We regroup for lunch in Cusco, then head to Sacsayhuaman to see fine examples of dry Inca masonry using enormous stones. On day 8, we will tour the San Blas neighborhood, where Cusco s artists and artisans work along narrow cobbled streets, then visit the Pre-Colombian Art Museum (MAP). Enjoy lunch and the remainder of the day at leisure before we gather for a festive farewell dinner. We fly back to Lima on day 9, where a dayroom awaits for your use. Enjoy time at leisure before your late-night flight home. ABA Travel: Peru 2015. 9 Days. Day 1: United States; Lima, Peru Wednesday, 30 September 2015 Fly to Lima, transfer to hotel.
