Summer Issue A Message From The Mayor.. Our August 3rd and 4th are the days our community will flock to our downtown to enjoy all of the special events that are taking place. I invite you to come out to the festival this year, which always begins with the Grand Parade on Friday night. The entire schedule is on page 7 and there are quite a few new events to come and experience. The event ends with a fireworks display on Saturday night. This year, the rain date will be on Sunday. I hope you are able to come and enjoy our family friendly festival which has something for everyone. Once again, thank you so much to the Rogues Hollow Festival committee which works hard to bring this annual event to us year after year. The new school year will begin soon, and the Chippewa Local School Board invites the community to an Open House for the new Middle School/High School on Sunday, August 26th from 2-5 pm. P a g e 2 V i l l a g e o f D o y l e s t o w n A u g u s t, 2 0 1 8 3rd Annual Empty Bowl Project Benefitting the Doylestown Community Food Cupboard, this event will be held October 14, 2018 in the new Chippewa High School at 12:00 2:00 p.m. PURCHASE A TICKET FOR A SIMPLE MEAL TO BE SERVED IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF GIVING: For a donation of $30, each guest will receive soup, bread, a cookie and water and will be able to choose from a variety of handcrafted bowls to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. If one wishes to make a minimum contribution of $10, the meal alone is provided without the gifted bowl. There will also be a silent auction, basket raffles, and a 50/50 drawing with all of the money raised going toward support of the Community Food Cupboard. 100% of each meal s proceeds are devoted to curtailing hunger in our community. In 2016 and 2017 the Doylestown Community Food Cupboard was able to dramatically extend food distribution, thanks to the generosity and dedication of the community members. Due to the over $26,000 raised by last year s Empty Bowl Project, we successfully increased the volume of monthly food distributed including fresh fruit and vegetables; increased the number of families that participate in both monthly food distributions, and the Weekend Backpack Program; and created a new backpack program for all of Doylestown Schools. Serving 140 children with weekend food; started an additional program that provides 30 pounds of supplemental food every month to participating senior citizens; and Started a Summer Weekend Program for children in our community. THE DOYLESTOWN EMPTY BOWL PROJECT 2018 GOALS INCLUDE: Raise as much money as possible to continue supporting The Doylestown Community Food Cupboard in 2018-2019 and its outreach programs; We are working with money raised in 2017 and 2018 to add more space at the Food Cupboard, this includes the addition of a walk in Refrigerator and Freezer; to increase awareness of hunger and related issues. Through education, awareness, and actions, concerned individuals can influence change in people s understanding and attitudes which allow hunger to exist; To advocate for arts education. Nurturing the creative process though the arts enhances that possibility of finding innovative solutions to old problems. HOW CAN YOU HELP: The Doylestown Empty Bowl Committee is looking for local artists and crafters who would be able to donate handcrafted ceramic, wood turned, glass blown, fiber, or metallic bowls to furnish the needs of this worthy project. To help us ensure the safety of the people attending as well as those in the area, the Police Department is asking for the community s help by following a few safety tips: Keep little ones off the street as much as possible during the parade Encourage children who are on their own to stay in groups within the barricades and have a check in time Be aware of your surroundings Immediately report suspicious activity to law enforcement officers Lock ALL vehicle doors and roll up your windows Do not leave any valuables in your vehicle Securely carry your purse and put wallet/valuables in a safe place Choose alternate routes to avoid congestion if you do not need to be downtown Drivers should slow down and be aware of increased pedestrian foot traffic Pedestrians should be extra cautious and watch traffic. Different roads and alleys are closed at different times Do not leave bags, purses, or drinks unattended Remember that open containers of alcohol are not allowed except for in the beer tent Alert citizens are essential in helping us to keep our community safe. We urge you to pay attention to your surroundings and immediately report any suspicious activity to one of our Police Officers. If you are unable to locate a Police Officer report it to the nearest Fire/EMS personnel, to the information booth near the statue, or contact our non-emergency dispatch number at 330-658-2771. As always, you can call 911 in case of an emergency. Enjoy the festival and have a safe summer! Monthly pick up is held on the 2nd Monday of each month from now until October. Pick up dates are as follows: August 13th, September 10th and October 8th. Please note that pick ups will begin on the specified dates, weather permitting. Depending on the amount of brush that needs to be picked up, it may take several days to complete. Brush must be at the curb by 8 am on the scheduled pick up date. Once pick up has taken place in your neighborhood, the crew will not return until the next scheduled date. Each pick up is limited to a maximum of 15 minutes. If more time is needed, it will be left until the following month. Shrubs will only be taken if the root ball has been removed. Please keep sidewalks clear of brush. Thank you for your cooperation. Spraying takes place every Wednesday evening. If it is raining or if there are relative high winds, spraying will be moved to Thursday evening. Spraying will help keep the mosquito population down, but will not eliminate them. Please use protective precautions when enjoying the outdoors. We are offering this service to Village residents on Saturday, September 29th from 9 am to noon in the back parking lot of Village Hall. This program is made possible thanks to the funds which we receive from the Recycling Makes Sense Grant through Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Joint Solid Waste Management District. This grant is based on the tonnage produced by our residents who participate in the curbside recycling program. So that we can accommodate everyone, please limit shredding to 5 boxes per person. We ask that you please bring one or more canned food items for donation to the Doylestown Food Pantry. Thank you from our Village Council members. Lions Club Halloween Program October 27th An exciting new experience awaits the little ghosts and goblins of our community this Halloween season. This year we will combine old traditions with some new traditions in response to the changes in our schools, the coming alive of our downtown, and a desire to become current. Here is the tentative schedule: 2:00-3:30 pm Trick or Treat in the neighborhoods 3:30 pm Assemble at the Library Gazebo 3:45 pm March with Chippewa Band to the Square where the CHS band will present a short concert 4:00 pm The costume contest will be short and sweet with 3 prizes for most original costume ages 0-7 and 3 for those ages for 8 and up 4:30 pm Pumpkin viewing and judging for two categories-painted and Carved (three places for each 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.) APPLES AND POPCORN FOR ALL! Pumpkins should be brought to the Village Hall by 2:00 pm. There will be signs directing you to placement areas. Forms will be available, so please fill one out to show who created each pumpkin. Local merchants will be open for the community to enjoy. This new Halloween experience will be sponsored by the Doylestown Lions and THRIVE. A special thanks to C. J.
