Fire Watch Newsletter An Arkansas Fire Training Academy Publication Winter 2010 In this article: Pictures of AFTA after tornado - p. 2 Crossword Puzzle - p. 3 Off-campus schedule - p. 5 A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR As many of you may have heard, the Arkansas Fire Training Academy is currently recovering from the F2 tornado that hit on October 29, 2009. Fortunately no one was injured during the event although several buildings were damaged beyond repair. Two of the AFTA s older classrooms, apparatus bay, and smoke house were badly damaged. The new administration building did receive some damage but will be repaired. The week before the storm 125 students were on campus; the day the tornado hit only 42 students and 15 employees were present. We are grateful for that and the students that were there were able to get first-hand experience in dealing with an emergency situation. As the Director, I want to personally thank the Firefighter Standards Winter Class of 2009 for their exceptional display of professionalism during a chaotic time. The AFTA is moving forward, offering classes and beginning to rebuild. We will be back bigger and better than before. The AFTA thanks all the fire service family that helped during the time of the storm as it reminded us of how much it means to be part of a family you can always count on. Thank you again for all you do! Rachel Nix, Director AFTA

Confined Space Rescue Training As part of a combined training initiative between the EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and the PHTLS (Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support) classes in October of 2009, students took part in mock-up training scenarios at the Arkansas Fire Training Academy. Under the guidance of instructors Jimmie Bryan of the AFTA as well as Rob Chastain and David Hollis of Air Evac, the students participated in confined space rescue where they had to assess emergency scenes and determine the safest way of extricating injured patients.
