The Council Weekly CENTENNIAL CORNER Ode to the old pepper tree at the San Gabriel Mission Steve Salazar was a regular presenter and emcee at San Gabriel community events. He is remembered for his legendary toasts, inductions and oaths, and he often captured the history of San Gabriel in his verses and poems. Centennial Co-Chair Mary Cammarano came across several of Mr. Salazar s famous selections, and this one titled The Old Pepper Tree is a tribute to 204 year-old tree brought from Mexico and planted in 1790, according to records at the San Gabriel Mission. Near our beloved San Gabriel Mission This gnarled old pepper tree stood. It held a spot so dear to many With gracious, gallant fortitude. This ancient and historic landmark Had a distressing end one can surmise. The winter storm of nineteen ninety five Was the culprit for its demise. It came to us over two centuries ago And withstood Mother Nature s wrath, Standing bravely, arms outstretched Until that windy storm turned toward its path. Time alone took its toll On this dear and long time friend. It saddened folks in our town To hear about its tragic end. The memories will linger on As we remenisce of times long ago. It was a favorite meeting place And it s sad to see it go. Farewell old friend we ll miss you When near your path we ll trod We ll remember you as the old pepper tree That grew near the House of God. What would you send to the future? During San Gabriel s 100th birthday, the unearthed time capsule from 1963 revealed old newspapers and aerial maps, a vial with a handwritten message, and a handful of coins. In December, the City will bury a new time capsule to be opened in 2063. Share your ideas for the time capsule to centennial@sgch.org with the subject line Time Capsule Ideas. As you think of items, please keep in mind that a time capsule is intended to indicate what life was like at the time it was sealed.
