First Call for Abstracts and Special Session Proposals: IIFET 2014 AUSTRALIA Towards Ecosystem Based Management of Fisheries: What Role can Economics Play? The Seventeenth International Conference of the International Institute of Fisheries Economics & Trade (IIFET) Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia, 7 11 July 2014 www.iifet2014.org (under construction) Organized by: QUT Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation Marine and Atmospheric Research (CSIRO) University of Tasmania University of Adelaide MG Kailis Group The conference organisers welcome all with an interest in the economics of fishery management, seafood trade, and aquaculture, to join us for the seventeenth international Biennial Conference of IIFET to be held in the river city of Brisbane, Australia, July 7 11, 2014.

IIFET is the only global professional organisation devoted to improving understanding of all aspects of fisheries and aquaculture economics and seafood trade. Members include academics, fisheries managers and policy makers, seafood industry members, international organizations and national government representatives. Australia is one of the world leaders in terms of integration of economics into fisheries management. Federally managed fisheries have an explicit primary objective of maximizing sustainable economic returns, while most States also balance sustainable economic returns with social factors. Most fisheries are also managed under an ecosystem based management framework. Australia is world renowned for its implementation of property rights management systems for a wide range of species, and innovative developments such as tuna ranching. Experiences of integrating economic targets and rights based systems within an ecosystem based management system will be of great interest to an international audience of economists, managers and industry participants, while Australian practitioners will benefit from similar experiences elsewhere. The conference will be held at the Gardens Point Campus of QUT (http://www.qut.edu.au/). QUT is Australia s top university under 50 years old, and is rated 26 th in the world in the Times Higher Education listing. The Gardens Point Campus is adjacent to the Queensland Botanical Gardens, and to Brisbane City itself, on the river front. The conference is organized by the QUT School of Economics and Finance and CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, with collaboration also from the University of Tasmania and the University of Adelaide. These four organizations are the backbone of the Australian Fisheries Economics Network (http://www.fishecon.org). A feature of this conference is industry participation, with a major fishing company MG Kailis Group playing a key role in organizing the conference also. Conference Themes and Topics The general theme and title of the IIFET 2014 Australia conference is: Towards ecosystem based management of fisheries: what role can economics play? This theme will deal with the multi functionality and interrelationships between capture fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic ecosystems, and the role that economics can play in assisting effective marine ecosystem management. The following topics will be of particular interest: 1. Fisheries economics and environmental effects of fishing 2. Aquatic invasive species: their economic impact and management 3. Climate change: economic impacts and adaption 4. Fisheries in the context of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM.) In particular, how do we maximize total benefits of the use of the coastal zone, considering the externalities that coastal and marine activities impose on each other? 5. Economics of marine reserves for conservation and/or fisheries 6. Recreational fisheries management, particularly in fisheries with both commercial and recreational interactions. Topics may include: a. How do we compare the social and economic values of recreational and commercial fishing? b. How do we use these values to allocate resources? c. How do we integrate recreational and commercial fisheries management?

7. Aquaculture economics, including a. The economics of aquaculture feed b. Future global growth potential and limits c. New species (including seaweeds, microalgae) 8. Markets and marketing of fish products including a. Market benefits from reducing environmental impacts (e.g. MSC and other labeling/certification programs) b.
