GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 2 PRESIDENT SENTIMENTS I hope everyone's holding up just fine in the 90 degree temps we've had recently. Summer is definitely here! It seems that a lot of our members have beat the heat by camping out at the diner or Route 66 taking in a banana split or ice cream sundae. Thanks to social media, I was also able to see that a few members enjoyed banana splits at the Elks Club 50's event. As for me, Ronnie and I have used the weekends and the heat to our advantage. We've spent a lot of time out on Pacific Coast Highway. Believe it or not, we didn't see too many Corvettes cruising PCH, so there wasn't much exchanging waves, but we did get a lot of thumbs up, nods & pictures taken. August will be a great opportunity to get those Vettes out on the road, driving to either beautiful Santa Ynez Valley and the Mendenhall Museum or the Taco Surf Restaurant in Sunset Beach. The weather should be great...so why not do both? We've set the date of our Charity Event and are playing our cards in a little different manner (no pun intended). We're on for our Poker Tournament. If you're up to trying your luck and joining a event where skills meet challenge - this is the event for you!! In order for it to be a success we need your help in promoting it. If you know any passionate poker players (new or shark), all are welcome. Please invite. Flyer will be included in this publicaiton. Stay cool, drive safe & save the wave! GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 7 MEMBERSHIP NEWS & VIEWS HUGH, TREMENDOUS THANKS to BOB NORMAN and KATHY HENRY and JOE and DEBBIE GARR. We were preparing to leave for breakfast the Sunday of the Big Bear Bash and my car wouldn t start. Bob, Kathy, Joe and Debbie came back and checked out my car while I called Auto Club and waited to make sure I wouldn t be stranded. Fortunately, it turned out to be a bad battery. We had determined that that was what it might be since my battery was installed in May of 2010. The car took a jump. I decided to skip breakfast and started home to get a new battery. Problem solved. I really appreciated the help, care and concern shown by Joe, Debbie, Kathy and Bob. It was nice knowing I was not alone. Also, while we were waiting a couple in a Corvette staying over at the hotel came over and asked if I needed help. Very thoughtful. There are two morals to this story: (1) We have some wonderful members who are willing to step in and help; and (2) You should pay close attention to preventative maintenance. If I had taken my careto Rich at Corvette Specialists and had a routine, preventive maintenance check, he would have noticed the date on the battery and the whole adventure could have been prevented. It is summer and car trips are planned. BEFORE you hit the road make an appointment to see Rich and have your care checked out to avoid these annoying problems. Lesson learned. TREMENDOUS THANKS, AGAIN, to DON MEYERS who opened up his beautiful party house for the 4 th of July party. It was a lot of fun. People enjoyed the pool and just getting together. This year Bingo was added. Along with having a great time, we raised a little money for the charity fund. Thanks to Kathy Henry, Cheryl Verdicchio and Don for making this happen. Don s home is the best place to watch the fireworks display from across the San Gabriel Valley. Don also deserves thank for setting up the Social dinners. This year he is trying to pick restaurants that will donate a percentage of what we spend on eating to our charities. When picking a place for the Socials, Don also has to look at the parking and whether they will give us separate checks (or at least break the checks down to tables). If you have an idea for a restaurant that meet these criteria, let Don know, he is always looking for new places for the Social. The Big Bear Bash was really fun this year. My THANKS to Bob and Kathy, Joe and Debbie and Matt and Kim who came out and sat in the sun to watch me run the auto-cross. I think their cheering me on, helped me beat my best time and get first place in my class. I think they were more excited than me when I saw I was 2 seconds below my ideal time. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT. While we are thanking members, BIG THANKS to Don and Sharon Holtz for hosting a get together at Big Bear on Saturday night. Even though they had to leave early Saturday afternoon to drive down the mountain, they opened their cabin and even joined us for dinner. It was a great way to spend an afternoon. For those of you who are kicking yourself for missing the wonderful time we had this year, the Big Bear Bash will take place either the second or fourth weekend in June. Believe it or not, the Robinhood Resort is already filling up. There are only a few rooms left and a waiting list is being created. If you think you might go next call, call the resort and reserve a room. Just tell them you want to reserve for the 2015 Big Bear Bash. The Robinhood Resort s phone number is (909) 866-4643. HAPPY 50 TH ANNIVERSARY to Wes and Libby Berry. 50 years, what a great achievement for two wonderful people. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 8 In addition to sending out an email asking for reservations for the business meeting dinner, I will have a sign up sheet each month at the business meeting. If you know you are coming to the meeting the next month and will be eating, you can sign up then. No need to RSVP to the email. If you DO NOT have email or did not sign up at the meeting, please give me a call and let me know you want to eat. This will save me a little time in trying to contact you. Also, please try to have your reservations in to me by the Sunday before the meeting. Rob needs time to shop and prep before Wednesday. Thanks for your cooperation. Saturday, September 13, will be the Mendenhall s Museum tour in Buellton. I have made my reservation at the Pea Soup Anderson Inn in Buellton for Saturday night. The cost was about $110 with my AAA discount. The event is put on by Leif and Debbie Hagman and I can t wait to check out this new museum. Should be a great day. GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 9 Fourth of July at Don Meyers Home What a wonderful relaxing day it was, everyone brought tasty food for our pot luck and Rosa out did herself, she made a delicious Mexican meat dish, beans, rice, jello & cream cheese pie, Pina Coladas & homemade fruit pop cycles. What a feast! We had aprox. 25 club members there. I really enjoyed everyone, what good people we have in our club. Bingo was so much fun, we earned $48.25 for our charities and the winners from our club were, Patty Morgan, again and again, how lucky she was. Bob, Mitch, Cheryl and a couple more. Thank you all for playing for fun and charity. Thank you Don, for inviting us to your beautiful home and to see the fireworks all around us. Thank you Rosa for all your hard tasty work, Muchas Gracias! Kathy Henry

GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 11 TECH TALK Oil consumption and the PCV valve Like other well established technologies, PCV systems can be taken for granted. But PCV faults can cause a wide range of derivability symptoms, as well as oil consumption and/or leakage issues. The PVC system replaced the road draft tube and has been on cars since the early 60's. The Positive crankcase ventilation system was invented by GM's Cadillac Division while building Tanks for WW II. The crankcase has a lot of gases and vapors that we would rather not breath, so these blow by gases are redirected into the intake system and burnt in the combustion process. The PVC system moves about 3 to 8 cubic feet of air per minute This may not sound like a lot of movement, but it does evacuate the crankcase by causing a vacuum in the valve covers, lifter valley and the crankcase area. This allows oil to flow back quicker into the oil pan quickly. When the PVC system fails, oil may be consumed. If there is a oil usage issue check the PCV system first. There is a valve and lots of hoses on a C 5 6. Un fortunately GM only sells the assembly for $120 to $150. The valve may be procured at the local parts house, but rubber components are GM only. If the PVC system is working OK then it time to think about changing the weight of the engine oil. C 5 can use a 10W-30 instead of 5W-30 or maybe higher C 6 to 2009 can do the same C 6 and all Corvettes 2010 or later are limited to Mobile 1 5W-30 Dexos 1 oil only. Late C 6 and C 7 are left only with 1 oil that is slightly heaver. If you are putting your foot into the gas and there is oil consumption Red Line oil makes a 5W-40 Dexos 2 oil. This oil will not void your warrantee. Honda, Ford, Chrysler's, are all switching to Dexos oil, but in a lighter grade 0W-20 or 5W-20 A degraded PCV system can cause sludge. Water can get into the oil pan byway of blow by gases by the rings. This is something that no one wants. When you drive the car drive it for at least 30 minutes on a freeway once a week or more. Nothing makes a engine last longer than clean oil. ED... ED MORGAN MEMBER 1982 Questions? morg74@aol.com
