In addition to the donation above, our members voted at our June membership meeting to support the Cool City Car Cruize & Show and the American Cancer Society, with a check for $100.00. This, a first for our club, adds to our support of worthy causes in Michigan. Our club has been on the Cool City show committee for well over a decade, and felt that, given the strong sponsor support this year, we needed to further support causes that are near and dear to our club s heart. ! President s Corner JULY, 2018 Dear Friends and Members, During one of our last meetings at Fritz s Restaurant an after meeting broke out on the naming of our beloved Mustang. As late as the fall of 1963, there was not a consensus within Ford s upper management agreeing on a name. As we all know, Cougar and Torino were some of the other options. Henry Ford II was dating an Italian model at the time and, of course, favored the name Torino. J. Walter Thompson had been ordered to develop a promotional tape using the Torino name. Photographs of the stylized car had the name Cougar prominently displayed on a card in front of the experimental model. Additional names considered were Bronco, Puma, Cheetah, Colt, Monte Carlo, and Monaco. Lee Iacocca said naming a car is the most difficult part designing a roof, doors, and a hood were easy by comparison. Designer John Najjar borrowed the name of the Mustang from the WW II P-51 famous pursuit plane flown initially in the European Theatre of Operation. The aviation connection was rejected until Mr. Najjar got his dictionary out and read that the Mustang was defined as a hardy, wild horse of the American Quotes from Henry! Plains. At this point, designer Phil Clark was asked to sketch a running horse. Even with all this Torino was still the leading candidate for a name. In the fall of 1963, the Ford upper management scored some tickets to the SMU Mustangs and Michigan Wolverines football game in Ann Arbor. This was just as SMU was becoming a powerhouse in football. Michigan took an early lead in the first half (23-0). SMU played inspired ball in the second half, but finally lost 23-20. Lee Iacocca was impressed by their tenacity and at the end of the game, asked if he could address the SMU players at which time he congratulated the players on a great effort and told them, they had helped name a car by their performance that day. It is believed that Mustang was Mr. Iacocca s first choice from the beginning, but needed a little extra ammo to convince Henry Ford II. 1 We can all be proud that the car we love so much is truly a local product in its inception, design, production, and naming. JULY, 2018 John Clor s Mustang Night MCMM Shows & Events Midland Ford-Lincoln, together with Ford Performance Group s John Clor, and the MCMM, presented Mustang s Role in Ford Performance History. The event took place at Midland Ford-Lincoln, on Thursday, June 21, from 4 to 7 PM. About 45 MCMM members and guests attended, which included a car show in the parking lot with about 30 vehicles. The show included Model A s to Mustangs, F-100 s to Shelby GT350 clones. Attendees enjoyed lots of car talk before John s talk. John Clor s presentation covered a range of performance-related topics revolving around the strength of the Mustang over the years. Midland Ford-Lincoln was the winner of our Ford sponsor contest this past year as the top MCMM Ford supporter. The Thursday event also featured a preview of the Quick Lane NASCAR Ford Fusion that was part of Midland Ford-Lincoln s Friday event that included a pig roast. All of the events were open to the public. By Tom Welsh, Editor DJ Detailing / Coty's Landing Open House and Lunch Dave Hickey II, owner of DJ's Detailing, invited our club to an open house and cruise-in at his newly remodeled facility, 7711 Gratiot, in Saginaw. The event was on June 16th. Dave gave us detailing tips and demonstrated new products including a replacement for clay bar. The upper two photos show Dave working on the hood of Tom Welsh s Vista Blue GT with the new Nanoskin foam pad (See page nine for details on purchasing a pad). The pads are available in three grades, work like a clay bar, but with out the kneading and using much less time. Dave advise us to use cold water to clean the pads; never using warm or hot water. They will do about six cleanings and take less then half the time of a clay bar and result in a getter job. Thirteen MCMM members attended. The next stop was at Coty's Landing, 777 Midland Road, Saginaw, for a great lunch. Both DJ's and Coty's are MCMM show sponsors. All in all, we had a great time and learned a lot. Is the Sedan dead? Recent announcements from Ford indicate that the sedan is dead. An article in the Tuesday Saginaw News lists sales figures for three of Ford s sedans, the Fiesta, Fusion and Taurus. I went back and looked at what I ve owned or leased and found 13 sedans out of 25 vehicles. The others were two minivans, two convertibles, two pick-ups, and six station wagons. Of those, 18 have been Ford brands. My first one, a 1930 Model A Fordor Town Sedan started it off, and the last one, a 2015 Fusion, will not be our last. I like sedans, and when I look at the multitude of SUV s on the road, they are just not my favorite vehicle. The Focus and Fusion both are terrific sedans and both are still on my list of favorites. (I counted our Mustang fastbacks as sedans for the sake of argument.) The article on the death of sedans indicated that Fusion sales were 306,860 in 2014, and were 209,623 in 2017. I concede that that is a substantial drop, almost 50%, yet there are lots of vehicles with annual sales of less then 200,000 that are strong sellers in their category. Fiat- Chrysler killed the Dart and 200 and only has their larger cars in showrooms now. What will GM do? Ford said that the Fusion will continue through 2021, and the Fiesta and Taurus will end production in the spring of 2019. The Focus (in a different form) and the Mustang sedans will continue for the long term. Good thing for us! And speaking of sales, Mustang s U.S. sales were 81,886 last year, down from 106k in 2016 and 122k in 2015. Check out the sales numbers for our favorite car, at right, HorseSense 4.6 that also include sales for China and Europe. I was unable to find Mustang sales for other countries, like Australia and the middle east. Note that the 2018 Camaro sales are for three months only. Clearly, for four of the past five years, the Mustang has been the sales leader of the segment. And 2014? Well, I m guessing that Ford customers held back knowing the 6th generation Mustang was coming out with a huge upgrade. New Meeting Location Announced Regarding the new venue choice, I m anxious to see how G s Pizzeria meets our club s needs for our monthly meetings. It will be a shorter drive for many and an longer drive for others. I expect it to be well supported by our members that regularly attend. See you there on the 16th. President, Al Selesky, just announced that our new location is G s Pizzeria, 3823 Bay Road (M-84), in Saginaw. The restaurant is just south of Tittabawassee Road, between McCarty Road and Shattuck Road on the west side of Bay Road. The location replaces Fritz s Family Restaurant that closed in May. G s Pizzeria offers two rooms that we can use, a 35 person room and a 50 person room. We have reserved the venue for our July meeting, with plans to extend the reservations through October based on member feedback. The restaurant does have a $75 room rental but credits our meal and beverage purchases towards this, an amount that we generally far surpass. Salad Recipes & Reports Spaghetti Salad - Perfect for Summer! HORSIN AROUND! JULY, 2018 1 lb. Spaghetti 1 8-oz. bottle of 2 Tomatoes Kraft Zesty Italian Dressing 1/2 btl. McCormick Salad Supreme 1 Onion 1 Green Pepper Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese Cook spaghetti as on the package. Rinse in cold water, and drain. Mix dressing and Salad Supreme. Chop and add onions, tomatoes, and green pepper. Pour dressing over mixture and mix. Enjoy! (Editor: Options could include black olives, chopped cucumbers, and other cheeses or pasta types-spirals, etc.) Healthy Summer Salad Idea! By Recipe by Jean Trish By Recipe by Lori Amo 1 pint Grape Tomatoes 1 Ripe Avocado 2 Ears, Fresh Sweet Corn 2 tbsp Fresh Cilantro, Chopped Honey Lime Dressing Juice of 1 Lime Dash of Cayenne Pepper 3 tbsp Vegetable Oil 1 tbsp Honey 1 Clove of Garlic, minced Sea Salt and Fresh Cracked Pepper to taste Remove husks from corn and grill over medium heat for 10 minutes. The corn should have some brown grill spots and be tender and not mushy. Cut the corn off the cob then scrape with the back of the knife to get the juices. Set aside and let cool. Slice the tomatoes in half; dice the avocado and chop the cilantro. For the dressing, add all the dressing ingredients in a small bowl, and whisk to combine. Set aside. Combine the sliced tomatoes, avocado, cilantro and grilled corn with the Honey Lime Dressing just made. Mix gently so everything is evenly coated. Be careful to not mash the avocado. Let the salad sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to mingle. June Treasurer s Reports After reviewing balance issues back in April and May, it was found that the spreadsheet had a formula error in it that showed a $200.10 error. The formula was in March, and was resolved. With the correction, the bank statement balances with the club ledger/spreadsheet. A full Sponsorship and Stampede income and expense report was discussed at the June membership meeting. Social Activities: Rick Montagne - American Gasser show was on Saturday, June 23 at their business on Gratiot in Shields. On Thursday, June 21 st at 3pm in Midland at Wilson Ford the Appreciation Gathering was held. There was food and beverages and John Chlor gave his presentation. It was a good program and we had great attendance. John talked about a new website that Ford wants to implement for a universal site for all clubs. If it goes we will replace our present site with it. Approximately 10 members were going to Sloan in Flint on Saturday, June 23 rd. Board Position: Looking for show chair for the 2019 show. If interested please contact Al Selesky lots of help is available to them. Car Show Charity: For the 2018 car show we had a profit of $2,264. A motion was made by Tom Welsh and seconded by Dick Lebsack to donate $2,250 to our show charity, the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, and was passed by the members present. A second motion was made by Dick Lebsack and seconded by Dennis Donovan to donate $100 to the Cool City Car Cruize & Show / American Cancer Society and it was passed by members present. Quentin will see if MCA will count these two donations plus one we did earlier to a young man who is rebuilding a Mustang. We would then have three donations to our credit. Car Show Raffle Table Report: Gina wants to say a big thanks to all club members who helped support the raffle table this year. There was a total of 31 containers set up and some having more than 1 drawing per container. All of this is possible with everyone s help whether it be with their personal donations and or donations from area businesses or helping to sell tickets. New Business: New Meeting Place: Fritz s Family Restaurant is now closed so we are looking for a new spot.
