PREFACE This publication is the second edition of the Florida Transportation Almanac, developed and produced by the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa. It follows the original publication produced in 1995 and the Florida Transportation Almanac and Atlas on CD- ROM produced in 1996. The Almanac contains data from existing data sources throughout Florida and the United States. A range of transportation topics is covered, and, to the extent possible, statistical data are for the most recent year available as of May 1998. Although most of the information provided in the Almanac is available directly from the respective agencies that compiled or collected the information, the ability to access this information from a single source offers significant advantages to the transportation community. The Almanac comprises eight major sections, as follows: # Section 1, DEMOGRAPHICS, presents information for the U.S., Florida, and the 67 counties in the state. All data are taken from the 1990 Census and previous. # Section 2, TRAVEL BEHAVIOR CHARACTERISTICS, summarizes travel behavior characteristics and trends in Florida and the U.S. Summary statistics are provided for all personal travel in the U.S. and Florida, as well as for the aggregated metropolitan regions in Florida. In addition, characteristics of the journey-towork are provided for the U.S., Florida, and its counties. # Section 3, MODAL STATISTICS, includes information on highways, aviation, public transportation, rail, seaports, transportation demand management (TDM), freight, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). # Section 4, TOURISM, focuses on tourism statistics for the state. # Section 5, TRANSPORTATION FINANCING, presents information on Florida's transportation tax and fee sources and transportation costs associated with the construction and operation of various modes, including highways, bridges, airports, public transportation, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities. # Section 6, TRANSPORTATION EDUCATION AND RESEARCH, presents an overview of the transportation education programs available at the state s universities and colleges and a summary of the activities of the state s transportation research organizations. # Section 7, DIRECTORY, includes contact information for various transportation-related organizations in Florida, including planning agencies, operating agencies, commissions, councils, committees, and professional associations, among others. # Section 8, MISCELLANEOUS, contains a list of frequently-used transportation acronyms as well as a metric conversion chart. SECTION HIGHLIGHTS Florida # According to the Bureau of the Census, Florida s population has increased more than 160 percent from 1960 (4.95 million) to 1990 (12.94 million). # During this time, household private vehicles increased 382 percent (1.68 million in 1960; 8.09 million in 1990) and licensed drivers increased 252 percent (2.55 million in 1960; 8.99 million in 1990). # The number of vehicles per household in Florida has increased from 1.08 vehicles in 1960 to 1.58 vehicles in 1990 and the number of licensed drivers per household increased from 1.65 drivers in 1960 to 1.75 drivers in 1990. # Changes in population, households, and vehicles resulted in household size decreasing by 21 percent while the number of vehicles per household increased 46 percent. # The gender distribution in Florida has remained relatively stable from 1960 to 1990 with approximately 48 percent of the population being male and 52 percent being female. # The percent of households in Florida above the poverty level has increased slightly between 1970 and 1990 from 84 percent to 87 percent. United States # Total U.S. population increased 39 percent from 179.3 million in 1960 to 248.7 million in 1990. # During this time, household private vehicles increased 181 percent (54.8 million in 1960; 153.8 million in 1990) and licensed drivers increased 95 percent (84.5 million in 1960; 164.9 million in 1990). # The number of vehicles per household in U.S. has increased from 1.03 vehicles in 1960 to 1.67 vehicles in 1990 and the number of licensed drivers per household increased from 1.59 drivers in 1960 to 1.79 drivers in 1990. # The growth in U.S. vehicles per household (62 percent) also exceeded that for the number of persons per U.S. household (-20 percent). # The gender distribution in the U.S. has remained relatively stable from 1960 to 1990 with approximately 49 percent of the population being male and 51 percent being female. # The percent of households in the U.S. above the poverty level has remained stable between 1970 and 1990 at 87 percent. 3

SECTION HIGHLIGHTS Florida # According to the 1995 NPTS, persons in Florida made 16.1 billion person trips that covered 137.9 billion person miles of travel during the year in which the NPTS was conducted. # It is evident from the 1995 NPTS data that Florida average annual household travel increases as household size and vehicle availability both increase. The Florida households traveling the most are those with four or more persons and four or more vehicles. # In terms of average daily travel, males and females in Florida make approximately the same number of person trips each day; however, men travel more person miles due to higher average person trip lengths. Overall, females between the ages of 30-39 years make the most person trips (5.44 person trips per day) and males between the ages of 16-19 travel the most person miles (74.38 person miles per day). # In Florida, the typical household makes 2,329 vehicle trips covering 19,218 miles annually. An analysis of household vehicle travel by mode indicates that family/personal business accounts for the largest segment (619 trips) of annual vehicle trips while trips to and from work account for the largest segment of vehicle miles of travel (VMT) (6,023 miles). # In Florida, the average person trip length for work purposes on public transit is 7.48 miles while the U.S. average is 11.86 miles. Comparatively, the average person trip travel times for this same mode and purpose are nearly equal for Florida (39.18 minutes) and the U.S. (40.88 minutes). These data reveal that the average speed of public transit usage for work trips is significantly slower in Florida (11.5 mph) than for the U.S. (17.4 mph). United States # According to the 1995 NPTS, persons in the U.S. made 378.9 billion person trips that covered 3.4 trillion person miles of travel during the year in which the NPTS was conducted. # Between the first NPTS conducted in 1969 and the one conducted in 1995, the number of household vehicles in the U.S. increased 143 percent, the number of person trips increased 161 percent, and the number of person miles of travel increased 143 percent. # Similar to Florida, the NPTS data indicate that U.S. average annual household travel increases as household size and vehicle availability both increase. The U.S. households traveling the most are those with four or more persons and four or more vehicles. # In terms of average daily travel, males in the U.S. make slightly more person trips each day than females; however, they travel significantly more person miles due to higher average person trip lengths. Overall, females between the ages of 30-39 years make the most person trips (5.00 person trips per day) and males between the ages of 40-49 travel the most person miles (54.00 person miles per day). # In the U.S., the typical household makes 2,321 vehicle trips covering 20,895 miles annually. An analysis of U.S. household vehicle travel by mode indicates that family/personal business accounts for the largest segment (626 trips) of annual vehicle trips while trips to and from work account for the largest segment of VMT (6,492 miles). 33
