Polynomial Roller Coaster

Six Flags Great America (30 pts) Purpose: Procedure: (Be specific!) Data Tables: Remember that ALL measurements and calculations must be in METRIC units. You may choose to collect measurements and answer questions on ANY TWO roller coasters. Roller Coasters - Height of tallest Hill Angle 1 # of steps (degrees) Distance (d) Angle 2 (degrees) Eye height (h p) Hill height (H) Roller Coasters - General ride information # passengers in full car # cars in train # passengers in full train Time of ride (s) Use the information below to determine the mass of a fully loaded train for your two roller coasters. Mass of one person: Mass of one car (without passengers): ~ 65 kg American Eagle: 1050 kg Superman: 500 kg (?) Batman: 485 kg Viper: 1050 kg Demon: 725 kg X-Flight: 500 kg (?) Raging Bull: 1225 kg Mass of fully loaded train Mass of Car Ride name Mass of Train Mass of People Mass of fully loaded train

Calculations / Questions: (14 pts) Answer the following questions for both roller coaster rides that you chose. Show all calculations, including formulas, plugged-in numbers, units, and circled answers! 1. Calculate the height of the tallest hill for each roller coaster. 2. Compare your measured heights of tallest hill to the advertised values found online and calculate each 3. Which hill on these roller coasters was the tallest? Why? 4. Calculate the work (J) required to bring a fully-loaded train to the top of the first hill of each roller coaster. (Remember that work equals the change in energy.) 5. Where on the roller coaster is the maximum velocity reached? Explain your reasoning. 6. Calculate the maximum velocity (m/s) of each roller coaster.

7. Compare your calculated maximum velocities to the advertised values found online and calculate each 8. Compare your measured total ride times (s) to the advertised values found online and calculate each 9. Calculate the average velocity (m/s) of each roller coaster. 10. How do the average velocities compare to the maximum velocities? Why is there a difference? Internet Research (3 pts) Collect information on the park s advertised ride characteristics (available at www.sixflags.com) to help you answer the roller coaster questions for the lab report. If you cannot find the required information on the official website, google it, or ASK YOUR TEACHER! Maximum Velocity (m/s) Track Length Maximum Height Total time of ride (s) The information you find online might NOT be in correct (metric) units. For all types of conversions that you complete (feet to meters, mph to m/s, etc.), SHOW YOUR WORK BELOW!

Selfie Scavenger Hunt! (3 pts) First, you will need to join the Facebook Group 2016 SPASH Physics Great America. A link to this group is available on physicsspash.com During the field trip, Ms. Wernicke & Mr. Hagstrom will post photos of themselves in different locations around the park and upload them to the timeline of this group. In order to receive full credit you must: Reply to at least TEN selfie posts with a photo of your own IN THE SAME LOCATION at the park. o Group photos are acceptable. o Any new posts will not be counted. You must REPLY to the original post for credit. o You must be clearly visible in the photo. 2 points of extra credit will be awarded for: o The person who posts the most photo replies o The most identical photo reply o The most creative photo reply Conclusion: List and briefly explain 3 ways that amusement park rides are directly related to SPASH physics content. List and briefly explain 3 sources of error that you might have encountered during data collection. Summary:

1. About how many rides did you go on? Great America Questionnaire 2. Which one was your favorite? Why? 3. Which one was your least favorite? Why? 4. List any problems you encountered while collecting your roller coaster data. 5. Did you have any problems using the protractor device? If so, describe them. Would you have preferred more equipment to help with measurements (knowing it would need to be carried)? 6. About how long did it take your group to collect the data at the park? To discuss results later? 7. What is your opinion of the scavenger hunt -- length, difficulty, enjoyment, etc? 8. Other comments or opinions?
