President s report Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook The three students who were giving speeches on the Four Way Test and their families were; Erina Yip with her father Eric, her mother Bonita and her sister Jouita. Irene McBride with her father Michael and her teacher Penelope Phillips. Ibrar Ahmed with his mother Shazia. Other guests included Bob Kaye-Smith, Phil Davis (Castle Hill Rotary Club) and prospective new members Colin Sharpe and Allan Twohig. An interesting and enjoyable night again with three very good Year 10 students presenting the Four Way Test in a new way. Each one was very eloquent and thanks to Colin McGowan and Trish Bell for adjudicating it would not have been easy. The winner will go on to the next round with, the finalists speaking at the District Conference next year in Canberra. At our next meeting the District Governor, George Papallo, will be visiting the club. He will meet with the Board prior to the normal meeting would everyone please make District Governor George and his wife Kathie welcome. The AGM is to be held on the 6 th December, if you would like to be more active and participate in management of the club contact Colin McGowan. It would be good to see a strong roll up at the meeting. We are looking forward to a quiet period after the DG s visit and the AGM, just Christmas. Our next activities are the The Raffle, Sausages Sizzles, the completion of the Rotary Walkway at Warrah and the Book Fair coming up in the New Year. But don t forget the Christmas parties with our Sunday Christmas Lunch on 5 th December at the Castle Hill Golf Club and our Christmas Meeting with Kris Kringle on the 13 th December. Graham At our last meeting 15 November 2010 President Graham opened the meeting and welcomed our many guests. The Stan Report - Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) course next Wednesday (24 th ) and Friday (26 th ) is from 9.00am until 2.00pm (NOT 9am 4pm as previously announced). The Carol Report The Club s Christmas Luncheon is on 5 th December at the Castle Hill Country Club. Cost is $45 per person. Community Service Report President Graham reported on the fence building at Warrah last Saturday. Dick Bushell was thanked for his great effort in organising the project (Hear! Hear!) Ros Bushell and Sandy Burrage provided us with a very welcome, splendid morning tea. Thanks must go to Col Sharpe who as a non- (but prospective) member made a sterling contribution with his expertise in hole digging and hammer swinging. Col said his dad always taught him That if a job is worth doing, it is worth doing well! The Col McGowan Report: 1. AGM - 1 st Dec. Board Members 2. Chiara leaving the McGowans and moving to the Bickford s. Chiara then gave her weekly report. Col Baxter: At the Porsche Club AGM, our Rotary Club was singled out for accolades A cheque from the money collected for CANTEEN was handed over. Suggested that our club do the same with our donation to CANTEEN in association with Porsche Club The Keith Report:- members advised about Nominee Forms for budding directors. Nominations will only be accepted if the nominee agrees. Members asked to please attend AGM on Monday 6 th December to effect new bylaws and changes in our constitution. President Graham reminded us about the visit by District Governor George Papallo next Monday 22 November. A donation will be given to his wife Cathie for the Stillbirth Foundation. If bringing guests please organise this with Carol. All Board members are to meet at 5.30pm before next Mondays meeting. Michael Moroney told the club that he had been able to raise $145 on Saturday 30 th to be donated to CANTEEN. This great effort was acknowledged by the club. The Bob (Davison) Report:- Next DIK 11 December. Bob explained Donations In Kind (DIK) to our guests (well done Bob) 24 containers per year are sent to people in need overseas. Qantas donated blankets, hospitals donate beds when updating, Schools donate desks. Police also donate goods seized after raids. (This was later clarified as being sneakers, clothes etc,) Rosemary introduced the three students to speak on THE FOUR WAY TEST exploring all aspects of this. Col & Trish were given the difficult task of adjudicating. Erina Yip from Cheltenham Girls High School explored the TRUTH in dreams. Whether what we dream is FAIR to all, will they build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS and can they or will they be BENEFICIAL to all concerned. Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook Ibrar Ahmed from Cherrybrook Technical High School spoke about the problems in Pakistan and how the devastation far outweighs that of any of the tsunamis, earthquakes and other natural disasters have on ther populations. He told us of the injustice of the food wastage yet obesity is a major problem in western society while 22,000 children die of starvation every day. Irene McBride from Hornsby Girls High School explored the Four Way Test in relation to Australia s handling refugees in detention. Whether the TRUTH is distorted by politicians and the media for votes and readership and that the number of refugees Australia accepts pales into insignificance compered to the UK, USA and Canada. She told us that Article 9 of The Geneva Convention states that no-one should be subjected to indiscriminate, unjustified arrest, detention or isolation. Australia supports, and is a signatory to this. Is Mandatory Detention in Australia FAIR to all. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS and is it BENEFICIAL to all concerned. After much deliberation Col & Trish chose Erina as the winner. President Graham congratulated all three students on their eloquent speeches and said how privileged we have been at our last two meetings to have heard nine students give first class presentations and that The World is in good hands! NR comment. The goals of the Contest are: To acquaint youth with Rotary, specifically, the tenets of the 4 -Way Test. To promote ethics in all aspects of the students life To demonstrate and enhance Rotarians commitment to youth. To heighten awareness of Rotary among parents, school officials, and the community at large. To recognize, encourage and reward hard work and accomplishment in our youth. To provide an opportunity for Rotarians to participate in a Community and Vocational Service Volume 24 Issue 20 Page 3 of 10 Monday 22 November 2010

I swear they go faster as I get older!!! This year we have chosen the Castle Hill Country Club for our Christmas Luncheon. It is located at the bottom of Spurway Avenue at Castle Hill and for those of you not familiar, it is a beautiful location, with sweeping views of the Golf Course. How to get there.. Best to turn left off Showground Road, into Carrington Road at the Council Chambers, turn left when you reach the end of Carrington, then when you hit Windsor Road turn right. Once you go past the Crown Plaza Hotel, it is the next street about 100m past the Hotel.) (I have given you these instructions because if you go right to the end of Showground Road onto Windsor and turn left, you will not be able to turn right into Spurway.) Thanks to all those who turned up to help at Warrah last Saturday week. The fence was completed in a furious morning of Rotary activity and Warrah are delighted. Thank you emails from both the Warrah CEO and President are reproduced below. Those who assisted are (I hope I have remembered everyone! If I missed anyone, my apologies) Graham Cuthbertson, Rob Wansbrough Barry Lambert, Rob Hamer, Michael Moroney, Clive Denmark Colin McGowan, Bob Davison Tony Makin, Colin Wright Rod Crosweller, David Turnbull Brian Furrer, Trish Bell With Ros Bushell and Sandy Burrage providing a delicious morning tea. We also had excellent help from the Warrah Maintenance Manager Nenad. Tony the Driller! Volume 24 Issue 20 Page 4 of 10 Monday 22 November 2010
