www.gwrra.org www.gwrra-regiond.org www.ohiogwrra.org www.chapteriohio.com Friends for Fun Spirit of Fun Roads to Adventure!! The I s of Ohio Safety & Knowledge JANUARY 2014 BOB AND BECKY S PAGE How's it going--good?? Well, the forecast that is coming in the next couple weeks, it sure sounds like winter is going to be here. We might have to put an extra blanket on the bike. For those of you who are reading this in Arizona or Florida, I reckon you can ignore that part, but winter is here for sure in Ohio. As of every year, we need suggestions for rides and week night dinner rides. If you come up with anything, let Bob Campbell or any of the other staff members know. We will try and complete a ride schedule at a staff meeting, possibly January 19th.It is hard to believe that we went through 2013 so quickly, but we did have lots of fun rides, dinners, and events with friends that made the year go that fast. Just a touch on the last events of 2013, the Christmas party which John has some pictures. We want to THANK everybody for their gift for Becky and I. We already have got to use some of it, "thank you" again. It was nice of the Des Dutch Essenhaus restaurant to take out an ad for a year in our newsletter. We had a good turnout for the Iron Pony dinner ride which 25 members attended. Thanks Charlie & Nancy for giving them a "heads up ". On December 23rd, for the Salvation Army bell ringing we had 9 members present and people seemed to be very much in the spirit of giving that night. As always, we closed down Wendys with warmth and fellowship. Thanks to those who showed up on a very, chilly evening. Don't forget for those who are attending Cabin Fever, get your registration in, flyer and information in this newsletter. We turned our gathering schedule in to Ryan's Family Steakhouse-did not get any information on any price change, we will see when we get there. We have information to pass on at the January gathering from the state officers meeting which was held in November. Here we go again, Becky and I will try and do as good of being chapter directors as we can, but like always, we will need your help and support. Hopefully we will have a fun 2014 and a safe year also. We will keep Rob & Sue informed, seeins how, they are our ACD's, we don't want them to miss out on the fun that the CD's have, because next year this position is open to them again. With a little bit of coaxing, maybe we can get Rob to write a newsletter article. I already know what his answer will be, but we will keep trying for one. With this last comment, we will see if Rob is reading this article. Let s keep Rob in our prayers so he can come out and play with the rest of us this year. Hope everybody has a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year!! Hope to see everybody at the January 11th gathering. AGAIN we would like to THANK our staff for their fine work and support of Chapter I, without them, it would be tough. They do such a good job in each of their positions. Have fun on your runs to the "Roads of Adventure". Bob and Becky CDs CHAPTER DIRECTORS Bob & Becky Benjamin 330-276-5900 amishtrike@aol.com Click on the picture to see how Ike Weaver is doing! RON S RIDER EDUCATION PAGE Drowsy Drivers are less risky in city traffic than on country roads By: James Davis There are two kinds of drowsy drivers: You The other guy Both can kill you. Maybe I should offer a definition for 'drowsy' before launching any further into this discussion. There are two kinds of fatigue: physical and mental. When a person is experiencing mental fatigue he is, as far as I'm concerned, both tired and drowsy. This is far more than a state of being close to falling asleep. It involves: loss of alertness decreased ability (and/or willingness) to scan and re- RIDE EDUCATOR Ron Harford cognize danger 330-276-2761 increased reaction times rlharford@embarqmail.com decreased motivation (willingness, again) slower mental processes like decision making I suppose it has escaped none of you that these are exactly the same symptoms evidenced by a person who is intoxicated or using certain medications (read: drugs). What is particularly dangerous, it seems to me, is that a drowsy driver is sometimes not even aware of his diminished capacities. Take, for example, the driver who is suffering from 'road hypnosis' who can be seen actually driving his vehicle (subconsciously) yet is oblivious to hazards in the road ahead and who does not even realize that his lack of hazard detection (or collision avoidance) activity is itself a hazard. It turns out that drowsy drivers are more dangerous to you if they are driving on country roads away from traffic than if they find themselves having to contend with city traffic. This, because when driving in city traffic they receive relatively frequent 'notice' of their drowsiness - sometimes because they hear/feel their tires running over lane dividers, sometimes because other drivers honk their horns or flash their lights in an effort to get their attention, sometimes because they are forced to make more decisions (shifting, for example). If it turns out that YOU are the drowsy driver, the odds of falling asleep are relatively small. Operating a motorcycle involves so much activity and attention that it is very rare indeed that a rider will fall asleep. On the other hand, because it does take so much attention and alertness to handle a motorcycle, drowsiness should be a major concern to all of us. Similarly, statistics gathered by accident investigators suggest that very few accidents happen because a car/truck driver actually falls asleep as compared to those that happen because a drowsy driver fails to detect a hazard or fails to take proper collision avoidance action. Since a drowsy driver is often unaware of how diminished his capacities are, if you are tired you are well advised to stop driving as soon as possible. If you are away from city traffic, be extraordinarily careful until you can find a place to stop for some rest or for the night because you will receive far less 'notice' or reminders of your drowsiness than if you are driving in normal city traffic. NANCY S PAGE Here I am wondering who's on the sick list as the year end's -- Let us just say a prayer for those who have had illnesses, broken bones or sprains, some bumps or bruises. But most of all we do need to keep those in our prayers who have lost loved ones. Most recently, former member Elaine Sick, just recently lost her daughter, our sympathy to her. Everyone have a HAPPY NEW YEAR as we send out well wishes for Rob on his test results, along with anyone else who has had health issues. We need to keep many positive thought's for our new year and to our director's, Bob and Becky for all their hard work. So if anyone has any suggestions for a ride or any other activity, pass the word in the right direction so it can be put on the ride schedule calendar.
