Welcome to the Pacific Northwest Welcome to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, home to the 54th Annual Studebaker Drivers Club International Meet! The Tacoma Area and Greater Seattle Studebaker Drivers Club chapters are proud to be hosting the 2018 meet and are so lucky to have the LeMay - America s Car Museum, a first-class car museum, right in our backyard. We are looking forward to sharing it and this area with all of you. This is an exciting time for this region, home to Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks, Amazon, and almost four million people from all over the world. We are rich with Native American history and heritage, with many cities, (including Seattle and Tacoma), named after Native American leaders and tribes. There are so many things to see and do here. We have spectacular mountains and hiking trails for those who love the outdoors, world-class shopping, sporting events, arts and culture, famous restaurants, wineries, and breweries. We hope that you will take a few additional days to do some day trlpping on your own. Tacoma, where America s Car Museum is located, is also where most of our meet events will take place. Hopefully you can take time to see some of Tacoma s treasures that include the Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum, Washington State History Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Ruston Way, Stadium High School, and the fantastic Point Defiance Park, Zoo and Aquarium. From there you can take a ferry to Vashon Island, a gorgeous rural paradise with great roads for a day trip in the Studebaker. Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States and has so many activities. Some of the best include the Seattle Center and Space Needle, Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square, Seattle Art Museum, Museum of Flight, Seattle Waterfront and Great Wheel, Seattle Aquarium, and Alki Beach. Wednesday, the first day of the meet, AOAI and LeMay ACM will be displaying and examining the histories of Avanti #R1001, the first production Studebaker Avanti, and Avanti Prototype #R5653 with seminars at the museum. Both cars will be on display at the Museum. This event is in partnership with the Avanti Owners Association International and Studebaker Drivers Club, Inc., and should be exciting for everyone. We are planning a driving tour to the other LeMay museum at Marymount, home to several hundred automobiles and other memorabilia. Bus tours to Seattle Center and the Museum of Flight are planned for Thursday and Friday. The Space Needle is the symbol of Seattle, created for the 1962 World s Fair. The bus tour will also include a stop at the world-famous Pike Place Market. The Museum of Flight is amazing, home to many vintage and historic aircraft like a British Airways Concorde and the Boeing 707-120 Air Force One that was delivered to President Eisenhower in 1959. For other travel, vacation ideas, and fun things to do while you are here, please check www.traveltacoma. com and www.visitseattle.org. I look forward to the meet and the exciting events we have planned for you. Warm regards, Laurel Berry President, Greater Seattle Chapter Studebaker Drivers Club Turning Wheels March 2018 27

SDC began a movement Into the Future with the 53rd International Meet in 2017. With the 54th International Meet In Tacoma, Washington, we continue to build on the success of that meet as we visit the Pacific Northwest for the first time in many years. The format is much the same as last year, as nothing is removed from our old format except the wasted time. It gives you everything you like about an International Meet, and guess what? It costs you less to attend! HERE S WHAT WE HAVE IN STORE FOR YOU THIS YEAR For those arriving early, our affiliated friends, the Antique Studebaker Club and Avanti Owners Association International have activities on Monday, August 27 and Tuesday, August 28, and extending throughout the length of our meet. Both ASC and AOAI are headquartered at the Best Western Tacoma Dome Hotel. On Monday and Tuesday, ASC registration will be available. Their hospitality room will be open all week. On Tuesday, ASC will have a driving tour through scenic parts of the area, arriving at the LeMay Family Automobile Collection at the former Marymount Christian Military Academy south of Tacoma for lunch. Starting on Tuesday, AOAI will have their registration and hospitality room open. Tuesday afternoon, the Swap Meet vendors will be setting up inside the Tacoma Dome Exposition Hall and outside in the parking lot across the street from the Tacoma Dome and north of LeMay America s Car Museum, our host museum. Today, SDC registration will be open at SDC headquarters, the La Quinta Tacoma Hotel, in the afternoon for those who are checking in early. Memorabilia displays will be setting up in the La Quinta this afternoon. DAY 1, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2018 We begin the day with registration at the La Quinta Tacoma Hotel. Be sure to check the hotel events board for the location of the registration area and all the other SDC events at the hotel. The Swap Meet is open today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside the Tacoma Dome Exposition Hall and outside in the parking lot north of the LeMay ACM. Be sure you have your SDC, ASC or AOAI registration badge with you as it is your ticket to get into the swap meet. Also starting today, if you show your registration badge at the LeMay ACM, you can get a 4-day pass to visit the museum for only $14. The LeMay ACM is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. This afternoon, AOAI will have a presentation at ACM, open to everyone, of two very significant Avanti vehicles, featuring talks on their history and restoration. The SDC Board of Directors meeting takes place in the La Quinta in the morning. This is the time when the club s business is conducted. Come to the board meeting, where all of the directors are together, and ask your questions. The Memorabilia Room is open starting today. Drop by and see Studebaker watches, models and displays that members have brought to the meet for your viewing pleasure. The SDC Hospitality Room opens today and features local Pacific Northwest snacks, coffee and other beverages. Stop by, make some new friends, talk Studebakers, or just share your thoughts with each other. Remember to leave a little something in the tip jar for those hard working folks who attend to this room and keep these goodies supplied all meet long. The SDC Judges Meeting takes place in the late afternoon at the La Quinta. Are you interested in becoming a judge of Studebakers for an International Meet or a Zone Meet? Come to this meeting and learn the criteria required to be a judge as our Chief Judge discusses SDC s Judging Standards. Today at 5 p.m. is also the DEADLINE to register your Studebaker to be judged in Class 1 through 4 on Thursday. DAY 2, THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2018 We begin the day with registration at the La Quinta Tacoma Hotel. Be sure to check the hotel events board for the location of the registration area, Newsletter Judges and the Chapter Officers meetings and all the other SDC events at the hotel. Stop by the hospitality room, sample some Pacific Northwest favorites, say Hello and check out the displays in the Memorabilia room close by. Drive-through Electronic Judging for cars PRE-REGIS- TERED for Classes 1 through 4 takes place on Haub Field (next to the LeMay ACM) starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. Today is also the FINAL day to register to be judged for Classes 5 through 9 and Special Interest vehicles starting Friday at 9 a.m. The bus tour to the Museum of Flight departs this morning from La Quinta and returns in the early afternoon. You will see the Studebaker powered B-17 bomber and many other airplanes, including Air Force One and the Concorde SST. They have many things to see as you tour the main gallery, the original Boeing factory building, Boeing Field apron and 28 March 2018 Turning Wheels

the new flight pavilion. There is even a snack bar where you can grab a quick lunch. This morning, Chapter Officers will be holding their meeting, which is open to ALL registrants; followed by the ever popular Cooperators Session to answer all your Studebaker technical questions. SDC s experts will be on-site to help you diagnose your mechanical and electrical problems. The ladies will have the opportunity to experience a Pacific Northwest version of a classic English High Tea at the ladies luncheon in the very unique Olive Branch Café and Tea Room, just down the street from the swap meet and located in Freight House Square, a repurposed railroad building. Transportation will be provided from the La Quinta. The tea room is filled with a very enjoyable not-to-miss antique décor. After lunch, the newsletter editors meet to discuss the latest techniques in Studebaker journalism. Drop by, as it is open to all members, and you may pick up a few ideas to take back to your chapter. The Memorabilia display will be open again today. Be sure to attend the driver s meeting for the Dealerships Tour to the LeMay Marymount Collection. Tacoma native and automotive expert, Lance Lambert, will be giving background information on the Tacoma Studebaker dealerships and other interesting locations you will be driving by on your way to visit the LeMay 500 plus car and memorabilia collection south of Tacoma at Marymount. Harold LeMay and his wife Nancy amassed a collection of over 1500 cars. Some were relocated to the new LeMay - America s Car Museum, our host museum, and the others are at Marymount and other locations. You can return at your own pace, but you need to get back to the La Quinta in time for the Studebaker Band Concert at 6 p.m. The Studebaker Band, under the direction of Glenn Shull, will kick off the Members Night evening event with a concert before the cocktail hour, famous Cascade surf and turf buffet, and Studebaker Auction. The bar will be open before and during the buffet and Studebaker Auction, in case you get thirsty. There will be comments by the Meet host chapters, SDC President Tom Curtis, and others prior to the Studebaker Auction. The Auction is your chance to bid on and win a rare or unique Studebaker item or other goodie you just have to have. Admission to Members Night is free, but you will need to pay for the Buffet in order to participate in it. DAY 3, FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 2018 Today is the last full day for the Swap Meet. Be sure to buy that special part before it is gone. It is also the last day to register for the meet and pick up your registration packet in the La Quinta Hotel. Be sure to check the hotel events board for the location of the registration area and the other SDC events and don t forget to stop by the hospitality room, sample some Pacific Northwest goodies and say Hello. The LeMay - America s Car Museum is open today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so use your special SDC $14 discount pass and pay them a visit. They have many Studebakers and other fine cars there for you to see. Griot s Garage will also be presenting a Detailing Seminar in the parking lot at LaQuinta Hotel this morning. Take the bus tour today to visit the two major icons of Seattle, the Space Needle and the Pike Place Public Market. The Space Needle was built for the Century 21 World s Fair in 1962 and has been recently remodeled. The Pike Place Market was enlarged last year to accommodate more vendors, restaurants and public areas. Watch the salmon fly at the fish market you may be able to catch one. Studebaker models, pocket watches, and memorabilia displays are being judged today in the La Quinta Memorabilia Room. Come on by and check out the action on your way to attend the Something Old and Something New seminars. You may learn something you never knew. Today is the FINAL day of drive-through judging at Haub Field, next to the LeMay ACM, since awards will be given out tomorrow. So if you haven t already done so, bring your Studebaker down to have it judged and have its picture taken. DAY 4, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2018 The Swap Meet is closing today. The Tacoma Dome inside portion will be packing up, as they have to be out by noon. The outside parking lot portion will be open until early afternoon. We suggest you get your parts early before the swap meet closes. Our Car Show is open to the public today. So wipe down your Studebaker and get ready to show it off. We expect a huge turnout of people to attend. Food vendors will be open, if you get hungry, and at noon, the Studebaker Band will have a concert for you to enjoy. After the concert, the class winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony. Stick around to see if you or someone you know has won an award. This concludes the SDC Tacoma 2018 54th International Meet schedule. However, you may want to arrive early before the meet to visit the LeMay Family Lucky Auto Auction or extend your stay to visit Bell s Studebaker Museum Open House in Bellingham or the Washington State Fair in Puyallup.
