Smooth air, better performance, and stunning views are great but they re offset by trickier landings, invisible terrain, and limited emergency options. So what s the key to staying safe after sundown? This seminar looks at night flying from a risk management perspective. Using decades of accident data, we identify common problems and recommend the best ways to avoid them. Along the way, we cover: Requirements for pilots and aircraft Unique flight planning considerations Why all nights are not created equal Things that can take you by surprise The seminar will be presented by Melanie Folcik Barillaro. Melanie, a very dynamic speaker, is an experienced instructor with airplane and rotary wing ratings Qualifies for WINGS credit. Visit faasafety.gov to register.

SolidWorks is published by Dassault Systèmes, and the student version is available free to EAA members for non-commercial use. According to the publisher, over two million engineers and designers at more than 165,000 companies were using SolidWorks as of 2013 All tutorial resources (instructions, part models, videos) will be available in the EAA SOLIDWORKS Resource Center at EAA.org/SOLIDWORKS in early August. Look for an announcement in e-hotline!

Speaking of the resource center, did you know that you can now take the Certified SolidWorks Professional Exam ($99 value) for free? DUATS Discontinued May 16 As you may be aware, the FAA will discontinue the Direct User Access Terminal Service (DUATS II) Program on May 16, 2018. On that date, the AOPA Flight Planner, AOPA GO and other flight planning tools will no longer have the ability to brief or file via CSRA DUATS. Users should transition to using 1800WxBrief (Leidos Flight Service) for briefings and filing on or before May 16 th to eliminate possible disruptions. Both the AOPA Flight Planner and AOPA GO are fully integrated with 1800WxBrief. The online AOPA Flight Planner provides an interactive, graphical briefing and can send flight plans to 6 of the top EFB apps on the market. New Leidos Flight Service accounts can be created for free from within the AOPA Flight Planner or AOPA GO. Instructions are provided below for linking existing Leidos accounts or creating new Leidos accounts from within the AOPA Flight Planning Tools: Existing Leidos Flight Service Account (1800WxBrief): If you have an existing Leidos Flight Service account, enter the email address associated with that account in the Pilot Info section of the AOPA Flight Planner or AOPA GO. You may be asked to add AOPA as an authorized service provider in your account information on the 1800WxBrief website (1800wxbrief.com). After entering your email address as noted above, additional instructions will be provided if provider authorization is required. Create a New Leidos Flight Service Account (1800WxBrief): If you do not have an existing account with Leidos Flight Service, enter the email address you would like to use for setting up a new account in the Pilot Info section of the AOPA Flight Planner or AOPA GO. You will be asked to provide some additional information to finish setting up your account and will receive an email from Leidos Flight Service upon completion that verifies your new account was created successfully. No further authorization will be required when setting up a new 1800WxBrief account.

Humanities DJI and Microsoft bring support for native Windows apps to drones with new SDK

DJI and Microsoft have announced a new strategic partnership to bring forward a new software development kit (SDK) to Windows that will allow for full flight control of commercial drones. Applications being written for Windows 10 will be able to be optimized for use with DJI's drones. Real-time data transfer and the use of AI and machine learning for image processing will help turn captured data into valuable business assets. In addition, DJI has also chosen to use Microsoft's Azure cloud platform for storage and processing of photos and videos. "Together, we are bringing unparalleled intelligent cloud and Azure IoT capabilities to devices on the edge, creating the potential to change the game for multiple industries spanning agriculture, public safety, construction and more," says DJI executive vice president Scott Guthrie. A native SDK for Windows enables developers to deploy Windows applications to DJI drones. One of the largest benefits to native Windows support is the ability to use already supported sensors, actuators and other robotic components without needing to invest in custom software. Microsoft and DJI have already started working to improve Microsoft's FarmBeats agricultural project. Data is being collected from aerial and ground sensors and analyzed using artificial intelligence models running on the Azure IoT Edge platform. Real-time heat maps are now able to be generated with the help of DJI's drones to help produce higher crop yields. Although DJI is the clearly dominant force in the drone industry, Intel is also aiming to take a sizable market share with its own AI software to process collected data. Despite the fact that there is still significant room for hardware improvements on drones, software is going to be the key to attracting the attention of business customers over the next several years. The official DJI SDK for Windows is available today (May 7, 2018) as a beta version. A final revision is set to launch this fall. GeoFs Free Online Flight Simulator GeoFS is a free, online flight simulator, with global scenery, that runs in your web browser. Whether you are a licensed pilot practicing VFR, an aviation enthusiast or just looking for some fun flying in beautiful landscapes, you can enjoy any of the 20 available aircraft, ranging from para-glider to airliners, absolutely anywhere in the world. Free 10 meter global satellite images Photo-realistic sub-meter HD imagery on subscription. more... Global high resolution terrain mesh Massively multiplayer Navigation map with 30,000 referenced runways ADS-B (real-life) commercial traffic in real-time

Runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Mobile Joystick support 20 available aircraft (+ community contributed) Real-time atmospheric conditions weather forecast feed GeoFS is built on top of Cesium, a 3D globe technology (just like Google Earth) that can provide global, highly detailed, photo-realistic landscape. When flying GeoFS for free, you are provided with global, 10 meter resolution, satellite images mapped over a high resolution mesh (30 meter, down to 1 meter in some regions). To enhance realism, you can subscribe to GeoFS HD and fly over high resolution, photo-realistic aerial images. GeoFS HD is particularly suitable for VFR practice. The environment can be dynamically lit depending on the time of day. Runway lights and PAPI are also rendered on major runways to help you at night and with your approach slope. A "location selector" offers to fly directly to pre-selected places of some interest. Or you can simply search for a specific location and be instantly transported at the right spot. Navigation map provides air space charts, traffic positions and about 30,000 clickable runways to take-off from. Clicking anywhere on the map allows to start flying from any altitude at any point on the planet. You can fly absolutely anywhere on earth. GeoFS runs a realistic physics simulation. Flight model is based on the Thin Airfoil Theory and simulate lift, drag and stall on all aircraft surfaces in real time. However, controls and procedures are simplified so you can be up and flying in seconds, even without any experience. Each aircraft is tweaked to accurately reflect real-life performance (speed, max altitude, rate of climb, etc.) All main instruments, while simplified are accurate and functional. Some of the most detailed aircraft offer an animated virtual cockpit and advanced shading (reflection, bump mapping, etc.) Real-time weather data is collected from openweathermap.org, based on your flying location, and used to generate atmospheric conditions (wind, cloud coverage, air temperature and pressure) that will have an effect on your aircraft.

Wind is also interacting with terrain to create dynamic lift: you can soar along cliffs and ridges with gliders. GeoFS is multiplayer: as you fly, you can see other pilots around you. Log-in with your Google or Facebook account and chat with other pilots. It is easy to find and join other pilots in flight from the list of logged-in users. You will also be able to spot real-life air traffic. The data (ADS-B) is fetched and consolidated from several sources and you can see and follow commercial aircraft flying in your area. 2018 Local Aviation Event Schedule Visit the eaa1310.org Calendar page for updated listings and more information about these events.
