Hudson Valley Council, BSA Dutchess District 2017 Klondike Derby Fire & Ice February 4 th, 2017 James Baird State Park 2017 KLONDIKE DERBY HUDSON VALLEY COUNCIL, BSA DUTCHESS DISTRICT Theme: Unravel the mysteries of the Land of Fire & Ice, survive their magical onslaughts, and bring back the treasure and win!! The Story: Plan carefully. This Klondike has two distinct parts: Do the Course Patrols from units will be completing the challenges presented at each station and competing for top honors and best overall scores. There will also be awards for best sleds in several categories. Serve the Community In Dutchess County, more than 30,000 residents are still food insecure (struggling to eat a decent meal on a regular basis or going without food for a day or days at a time). Each scout and scouter should bring one non-perishable food item to be donated to Dutchess Outreach which has food pantries throughout the county. Your patrol will receive points toward your overall score. Thank you to all units and Scouters volunteering this year. Thank you to Anna McElroy for the patch design. 1 P a g e

On the day of the event we will need adult volunteers from each unit to help with the mass judging events: 1-Launch! Fire & Ice Sampler -and- Lunch-Feeding the Dragon. Please see description in packet We will have directions and score sheets available the day of the event. Please see the list of stations and contact Brian McElroy if you can help if another unit is handling a station, it s always possible they need another helper so ask, don t assume you can t help at that station! Brian McElroy 845-464-8797 (cell) brian@mcelroys.org As always even those running stations must register. Registration The Dutchess District will be hosting this year s Klondike Derby on Saturday February 4th, 2016. The Klondike Derby will be held at James Baird State Park. The theme for this year s event is Fire & Ice. Cost for the Klondike is $10.00 per scout $ 5.00 per adult Price includes a Klondike patch and ribbons, as well as hot chocolate and a snack at the end. Reservations should be made in advance on the Council Website. You must register online but payment options have changed. You may now mail in a check with a copy of your online registration. Deadlines continue to be in effect. There will be no Unit walk-ins accepted the day of the event. Late registration fee (after January 30, 2017) will be $12.00 per scout and $7.00 per adult. On-site check-in for the Klondike will be Saturday, from 7:30AM 8:30AM. All vehicles must be parked in assigned parking areas. Please note that we expect a large number of units and depending on the weather, parking may be at a premium. Car pooling is encouraged. All scouts are to carry water and a mug with them. Scouts will be cooking their lunch (1 pot meal/nutritious soup or stew) as part of a station and must have all ingredients, utensils, fire building materials etc. on their sled. Lunch is a timed and judged station. Encourage them to plan ahead (see section Feeding the Dragon for details) All stations will close at 3:30PM. The awards/closing ceremony will be held at 4:30PM. 2 P a g e

Service Project: 1 non-perishable food item should be brought by each scout and adult. This continues to be a time of need in our county and the district has committed itself to helping meet that need. This food will be collected at check-in and will count toward each patrol s overall score. Safety Concerns/Be Prepared: At least one adult leader in your troop should be well versed in safety issues surrounding cold weather camping/activities. The SPL and this person should review the precautions to follow when doing activities in cold weather with all members of the troop. The Scout Handbook is a good resource for this discussion. Please dress in layers. Wear boots (NO SNEAKERS) Event Contact Information: Brian McElroy 845-464-8797 (cell) brian@mcelroys.org In the event of bad weather, an announcement of cancellation will be made. 3 P a g e

Activities. 2017 KLONDIKE DERBY HUDSON VALLEY COUNCIL, BSA DUTCHESS DISTRICT Liekki Jää reki (Flame and Ice Sleigh) Judging Rules Sleighs will be judged on creativity and construction. All sleighs will be considered for all categories. So long as nothing about the sleigh violates the rules, goals and spirit of scouting, anything goes. In the event there is no snow then wheels will be allowed, however all sleds must demonstrate snow worthiness to qualify for this part of the competition. Sled should have (each of these will be part of overall judging points for the station): Magical look Look like it can fly Demonstrate the magic and wealth of the patrol A treasure chest or secret compartment that can hold the supplies food, station requirements, first aid kit, etc. that the patrol needs for the day all patrol supplies must be stowed in the chest or compartment except the staves/poles Category 1 Most Creative will be judged on: Fire & Ice related themes and concepts, overall utility design features for navigating the course, materials: jewels, magic, fire and ice, does it look like an adventurer s sled, and ease of use. Category 2 Flight will be judged on: Sled should look like it could fly using magic, steampunk tech, magical creatures, etc. The overall design and look should support the idea that the judges could see this sled swooping through the winter sky. Category 3 -- Judges Choice Judge s favorite based on theme, scout spirit, enthusiasm, construction etc. and costuming. NOTE: When designing the sled theme, a thought kept coming into my mind, a ride they used to have at Busch Gardens called Questor. Your sled certainly doesn t need to look like it, but the idea of a flying magical vessel searching the land of ice for jewels is Questor! ASO here s a link to their old video on YouTube, the Questor sled is shown at the end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktnwevay050 4 P a g e

Lunch cooking challenge: Feeding the Dragon Introduction: Build a fire adequate to cook your lunch. Prepare portions enough for each member of your patrol and your Judge. Serve and eat the meal, including your Judge in a normal BSA/Scout Handbook specified way, following guidelines on such things as nutrition, serving sizes, grace, prepared menu and other matters. Lunch should be a 1-pot meal-type meal, and should include the following features (i.e., these will be part of the judging): - Colorful - jewel-like would be the most in this category - Hot lightly spiced would be the most in this category HOWEVER make sure as always to check that ALL can eat whatever you plan, and be prepared to explain the results of the discussion to your Judge - Include a hot beverage to keep the patrol warm - Timing prepare a meal that you will have adequate time to cook properly after the cooking area is hot enough, and to eat it (50 minutes total) - Each of the areas mentioned above in the Introduction, and anything you are guided to do by the Scout Handbook - Judges may add a few bonus points in any category that specifically follows our theme of adventuring/jewels/magic/fire & Ice be creative and have fun with it!! 5 P a g e
