THERE'S GOLD IN THEM THAR' HILLS! The year is 1897 and gold has been discovered near Dawson, in the Yukon Territory! Men raced across the Chilkoot Pass by means of dogs and sleds and down the Yukon River to reach the gold filled creeks. This year we will be recreating that fabled gold rush at Camp Cedar Valley, located near Viola, AR. just east of Mountain Home. Google Camp Cedar Valley for more information about the camp, including specific directions to camp. Your patrol must be prepared to meet the challenges you may meet. Each dog team, (you and your patrol members) will set out on your trail to find your gold! Your team should be prepared to handle any situation which you should encounter. There will be some new twists this year. Along the way there will be many obstacles which must be overcome before continuing. At each obstacle you meet you will be told a story that just might contain clues on how to prevail over each challenge. The Cedar Valley is very treacherous, indeed, fraught with many dangers around every bend! Scoutmaster s you had better work hard to prepare your miners for this challenge!
Notes from the Mayor s Office Now listen up! The Honorable Mayor of this here Cedar Valley Minin' Camp got's a few things to say to you all, so ya better perk up an pay attention, 'cause he ain't sayin it twice! Speakin of payin there s a gonna be some card playin around the camp that can pay big money, an the Mayor don t want no trouble so you better keep your card playin and your nose clean! Better know your first aid cause we will be callin on each an everyone of you. Ol Doc Grizzley, well his eyesight ain t so good. His last patient got his fingers on one hand sewn all together and can t tie no more knots. Oh poor Lucky! Speakin of knots, you re a gonna have to really know your knots at this here minin camp, in fact your gonna have to know about 40 of them! I m just durn tired of losin good pack mules cause they ain t tied up properly an wander off the cliff. I m also losin miners when they go after them mules an don t come back, but them pack mules are expensive to lose! Miners, not so much. An another thing! You better know how to throw a stick of dynamite down a hole. The best ones that can do that are a gonna get paid in lots of gold! We re also gonna need some help with the grub. Our last cook, Betty Barfmore, ate some of her own food one night an had to go see Ol doc Grizzly. That was her second big mistake! There will be lots of gold for the patrol that can cook breakfast Saturday morning an dessert Saturday night. When poor Betty rushed to the outhouse she must of taken all the matches in camp with her to light the lantern in the two seater, an got blowed up. Every single match went up with her, so you re a gonna have to light fires using only flint & steel, so be prepared! There s a gonna be a lot s more a goin on an on the next page I ve scribbled down a few of them. Just remember, be prepared! XXX Mayor of Cedar Valley Minin Camp
