Van Nuys Tower Today The Van Nuys Airport Traffic Control Tower is located on the west side and about mid-field on the Van Nuys Airport. The airport is a public use airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando section of the city limits of Los Angeles, California. No major commercial airlines fly into this airport. Van Nuys Airport is used by private, chartered, and corporate aircraft and is owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports, commonly referred to as LAWA. Van Nuys Airport is currently the world's busiest general aviation airport and the 18th busiest airport (in terms of takeoffs and landings) in the world. Covering 725 acres, the airport has just two parallel runways, runway 16R/34L, 8,001 feet long and runway 16L/34R, 4011 feet long. Van Nuys Airport handled 398,022 aircraft movements in 2008, averaging over 1,090 operations each day. Thus far in 2009, Van Nuys Tower has had 220,733 operations (as of the end of July, 2009), averaging 1,041 operations each day. By comparison, Los Angeles International Airport, (with 4 runways and exceptional amounts of commercial traffic) has roughly 1700 operations a day. A portion of the busy activity record at Van Nuys Airport is due the fact that most news helicopters from the Los Angeles area are based at Van Nuys Airport. Hollywood celebrities, politicians, and corporate executives are known to use this airport because it offers them convenience and anonymity. Reflecting this level of use, over 790 aircraft are now based at Van Nuys Airport, 242 of which are multi-engine jet aircraft. Perhaps due to its proximity to the nearby Hollywood studios, the Van Nuys Airport is commonly used as a filming location by a variety of studios. For example, Humphrey Bogart s famous goodbye scene with Ingrid Bergman in the movie Casablanca was filmed at Van Nuys. In 2005, a film documenting the history of the Van Nuys Airport was released under the title One Six Right, named after the more popular runway at the airport. A sequel to that movie, One Six Left, has also been produced and released. The airport is also home to the Van Nuys FlyAway Bus service, which provides non-stop bus service from the airport to Los Angeles International Airport. This allows travelers to park their cars at Van Nuys and not have to deal with driving to LAX or parking fees at LAX. 4
