We did get some of those April Showers. Some of those who came back from the Laughlin River Run late on Saturday got caught in some wet weather. Last month I quoted the old saying April showers bring May flowers. Do you know what Mayflowers bring?.. Pilgrims! Ok, enough of the levity! Down to some serious business. The Las Vegas Metro Police Department Motorcycle Division did outstanding in the 2015 SPMTC held in Phoenix. The LVMPD had the biggest cheering section of all (SNHOG)! Not even the local Phoenix PD had as big a cheering section as LVMPD. I want to thank Steve Ritchey for inviting our chapter to this great event. We all had a great time and it just made it even better that LVMPD won 1 st place in the Harley Davidson class events. The April Meet & Eat was at Casa Don Juan in Summerlin and Rod Rodriguez was the lucky Dinner Winner. So if you join us at the May Meet & Eat at the Harley Davidson Café, you could be the next lucky Dinner Winner! I know that the Labor Day double overnighter was scheduled for Moab, UT. This is not going to work because there are no available hotels close to Moab on that weekend. So we have changed the destination for the Labor Day double overnighter weekend to Elko, NV. The County Fair will be going on! S.N.H.O.G. The Director s Saddle...continued Saddle...continued I would suggest that we keep Moab, UT on the schedule for 2016 as Moab has some great scenery and awesome National Parks close by. Our May double overnighter is coming up quickly, on Memorial Day weekend. This ride is taking us to the North and South rims of the Grand Canyon. Since this ride takes us through the National Parks, now would be a good time to buy your park pass. As we all know, Speedo will have an awesome route for our Grand Canyon ride. Many more great events are coming up in the next few months, including the June annual Picnic in the Park for our General Membership meeting. Check the calendars for all of the great upcoming rides and events! Ride & Have Fun SADDLE UP! LET S RIDE! Page 2

It s Time for a Drink By Larry Kusler, RC, Safety Officer Sorry but I am not talking here about the kind of drink some of us have been known to consume after our ride is over. This time I am talking about water. For those of you that have experienced the lovely riding weather we endure in the summer, you will know of what I speak. For those of you that have yet to enjoy a ride through the desert in the middle of the summer, you have an experience unlike any other coming up. For all of you, it would be best to heed the advice about to be given to you. If you spent any time back east where the humidity is significantly higher than what we have here, you know what it s like to be absolutely drenched in perspiration. Seemingly gallons running off of you; clothes completely soaked. You know for certain that you are losing lots of water. It is obvious. For the desert dweller it is a little different. You are still losing just as much water through perspiration but with the extremely low humidity, for the most part it evaporates much more quickly. You may not realize just how much water you have lost until it is too late. Happily there is a solution. Drink water! When you think you have had enough, drink some more water. Now I am not a big fan of water. I jokingly comment that I know what fish do in it, so my drink of choice in the summer is one of the sports drinks. My bike never leaves the house without way more of it than I think I will ever need. I also supplement that at each and every stop with water (ick) and that gets me through the summer rides. A couple of years ago we had a relatively long ride across the desert in the summer. The road captains were wandering around the group at the first stop checking on the riders and the passengers to make sure they were drinking. One of our members indicated that, like me, he didn t like water and would prefer to wait until he was thirsty. We had a short discussion and since I happened to be the ride lead on that ride I explained to him that the group would wait for him to drink before departing; peer pressure at its best. He decided that he was thirsty, drank a bottle of water and the group departed. The important point here is that he (like all of us) can t wait to be thirsty before we start to drink. For the summer rides you need to start hydrating at least the day before the ride and consume what for many is more water than they may think is necessary. It isn t possible to drink too much water. I promise you that your body will eliminate it faster than you can consume it. Don t forget your passenger if you have one. They are losing just as much as you are and need to hydrate just as vigorously as you do. Plan to carry water on the bike. If you have a bagger it s easy. If you don t then get a bag that you can attach to your bike and put water in it. Even on the short rides, take way too much water with you. You never know when you may have to wait on the side of the road for a little while. There isn t a lot of shade to wait in and you will still be losing water. There are also hydration vests that you can buy at the dealership. I have several now and I love mine. I look a little strange in the middle of the summer wearing a lightweight jacket but those Harley vented/ mesh lightweight jackets worn over the top of a hydration vest allow the air through and slow down the evaporative loss from the hydration vest. Continued on next page Page 3

It s Time for a Drink, continued I am fairly comfortable at temperatures up to about 110. Above that, just like all of you, I am hot. But I don t feel nearly as hot as I would without the vest. If you don t have one you can simply pour water on yourself as frequently as possible. It will evaporate quickly but as it does it will remove body heat. That s the important thing about all of this; keeping your body temperature from getting too high. Both methods are a lot like wearing a swamp cooler. In a nutshell, water in you and water on you will help immensely. If you have reservations about riding in the summer take the time to talk with some of our more seasoned riders. You will find that they will be happy to share with you what works for them. We are blessed to be able to ride year round. It gets a little cold in the winter and a little warm in the summer but we still get to ride. That is why we bought the bike and joined the chapter. Common friends with a common passion. Page 4

Personal Therapy & Couples Time By Randy Roberts, Road Captain Hello everyone, My name is Randy Roberts and I m one of the newer Road Captains. I ve been riding motorcycles since I was 11 years old, mostly of the dirt bike variety but as I grew older, I moved on to street bikes (mostly the foreign types, sorry). I had put the bikes away for a spell and replaced them with children. Well, now the kids have grown and I found myself with a little extra time on my hands. Ironically, my friend Larry (otherwise known as L.P.) was always spending his Saturdays riding with the HOG Group. His lovely wife, Gretchen, would try to convince me that I should ride along with LP on one of his other Harleys. Well, you and I know that a person just doesn t borrow another person s Harley, these things are sacred! Besides, what if I dropped it or put a scratch in it, oh my God, I could never forgive myself. Well after much debate and a lot of pressure from Gretchen, I finally gave in and took Larry s prized Dyna for a ride. Wow, I had forgotten how much fun it was to ride and that riding a bike allows you to forget about the day to day crap and therefore provides some much needed personal therapy. You know, I put almost a thousand miles on that bike until one day LP suggested that I try one of the larger cruisers. Off we went to LV Harley and I jumped on an Ultra Classic for a short ride (Thanks JP!) I went home that night and spoke to my wife about getting a Harley and told her how much fun we could have together riding this thing. She s never been one to say no to my crazy ideas, so she agreed but told me that she would probably not be riding along as the motorcycle scene really didn t interest her. I believe it was October and the HOG Group was about to go on an overnighter to Tucson, AZ. I convinced Kathy (my wife) that we should go along for the weekend. Well, she wasn t going to ride all that way on the back of my bike, but she and Gretchen would follow the group in our car. The car also doubled as an extra baggage carrier which I think some of the group really appreciated! Over the weekend, I was able to convince her to go on a ride to Tombstone with some of the other riders. That was the start of a whole new relationship for us. Since that trip, she has rarely missed an overnighter, or even a chance to ride with the group! She s grown to love riding so much, that she has since owned 2 bikes for herself! Her newest pride and joy is a 2014 Heritage Softail. After riding with the chapter for about a year and a half, and watching how the other RCs would provide protection and added safety for the group, I decided to put in my application for Road Captain. I knew that it would require a certain amount of dedication and effort, but for me, it would be a worthwhile endeavor that enables me to give back to the club that has given so much. Here s the moral to my story Owning and riding Harley Davidsons, especially with the Southern Nevada Harley Owners Group, can provide awesome new experiences, awesome new friends and much needed personal therapy. It can also provide a great way for couples to get some fantastic together time! I would like to remind all of you riders that summer is just around the corner and the temperatures will surely soar into the 90s and even 100s. I know that we always try to remind riders to drink plenty of liquids, preferably water and/or Gatorade, but please, make sure that your passenger also has plenty of liquid and wears the proper clothing, i.e.: long sleeve shirt, hat, sunblock, etc. You may not think that they could get heat stroke or heat exhaustion from just riding on the back, be trust me, the voice of experience is telling you that they sure can! Have a great summer and I ll see you on the road! Page 5

Helping HOGs By Matt Garland I m taking time this month to update you on two of our charities: Nation of Patriots and Guide Dogs of America. The month starts with the Nation of Patriots annual golf tournament on Saturday, May 2. Even if you re a scratch golfer like me, meaning that you scratch your head wondering where your ball went, you can get out there and have some fun while supporting a great charity. The tournament takes place at the Paiute Golf Club. You can sign up via flyers available at the chapter meeting or online at the link below: https://www.regonline.com/register/checkin.aspx?eventid=1685941 And keep your radar set for the Patriot Tour as it begins on Memorial Day weekend and ends on Labor Day weekend. During that time one American Flag is escorted across our fine country through 48 states. The Flag will be received by our region on July 19 and will be escorted to Lancaster, CA on July 21. While the Flag is visiting Southern Nevada it will participate in events to help raise funds for the charity. The Nation of Patriots runs on volunteers. If you are interested please contact Larry Kusler at bigkuss@cox.net or Paul Smith at pwsmith3@cox.net More information regarding the Nation of Patriots is available online at: www.nationofpatriots.com And don t forget to look for our own Steve and Grace Cohan as they raise funds for Guide Dogs of America. They travel the country attending various rallies selling raffle tickets for a customized motorcycle. All of the proceeds from the ticket sales go directly for helping to provide guide dogs to the blind. The bike is donated and so is the customization. To learn more about Guide Dogs of America go to their website: http://www.guidedogsofamerica.org To view a touching video that includes stories from recipients of guide dogs, watch Tails of Independence at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsap7iovyfw&feature=youtu.be The next stops for Steve and Grace near us are: May 20-24: Red River Memorial Rally in Eagle s Nest, New Mexico June 4-7: Street Vibrations in Reno, Nevada So if you see Steve and Grace at a rally, stop by the booth and show your support. Event Photographs A Friendly Reminder! Photographs are such a great way to remember events in our lives. Our SNHOG Event Photo Gallery is also a great way to share the fun we have as a Chapter with friends, family and/or anyone who is skeptical about joining our Chapter. By browsing through our event photos for just a few minutes, anyone is able to quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round! Although Claudia Smith and Patty Scobee are our official Chapter Photographers, they are obviously not the only ones taking pictures at our events. If you have photos you would like to submit for the gallery, please email them to photos@snhoglv.com and they ll get added to the gallery. The name and date of the event must be included in the email. Be sure to visit our online Photo Gallery at http://snhoglv.com If you are interested in becoming a Chapter Photographer, please fill out and submit an officer application. PLEASE BE ADVISED Photographing, filming, recording, and videotaping of activities and events will be occurring at our events. By entering the H.O.G. event area, you irrevocably grant permission to the Harley-Davidson Motor Company and its agents to photograph, film, record, and/or videotape you and use (and authorize the use of) your name, image, likeness, voice, and/or biographical or other information in any and all media now known or hereinafter developed in perpetuity for any and all purposes. Did you know... Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. Arlington National Cemetery Page 17
