Now in its fifth year the Mt Arthur Challenge continues to attract more and more competitors with the 2017 event gaining a record number of participants and sold out prior to the scheduled close of registrations. ABOUT THE MT ARTHUR RESERVE TRUST The Mt Arthur Reserve spans over 2000ha of bushland and is managed under the Crown Lands Act 1989 by the Mount Arthur Trust, a small group of dedicated volunteers from the local community. The Reserve has been managed by various Trusts since its gazettal in 1964. The Trust has little regular income and is largely dependent on volunteer labour and government grants when available. Over the last few years the Trust has obtained several grants for projects within the Reserve and has been active in upgrading signage and picnic facilities, road maintenance and safety upgrades, fencing, weed control and tree planting. In 2011, 2012 and 2014 the Mt Arthur Trust placed in the top 3 finalists of the Crown Reserve Community Managers Category of the NSW Regional Achievement and Community Awards. The Mt Arthur Trust host the Mt Arthur Challenge on the reserve as way of highlighting the diverse functions and scenic beauty of the recreational area. The event is organised by the Mt Arthur Challenge Committee (a subcommittee of the Trust). The Challenge Committee was awarded the 2016 Community Event of the Year at the Wellington Australia Day Celebrations and the event is now considered as one of the six major Wellington events, joining the Wellington Boot, Wellington Show, Springfest, Vintage Fair and Eisteddfod. The event has been successful in encouraging more people to visit the Reserve from outside of Wellington. We have also observed a greater number of locals out and active in the Reserve since the event has been running.
