May Lyons Show Update We had great weather for our May show held in Lyons, May 21 st and 22 nd. There were a lot of new faces and it was great to see old friends for KPHA s first show of the year. Several random draw prizes were given away throughout the show and awards were given for Hi-Point and Reserve Hi-Point in each division. KPHA would like to thank all of the volunteers and exhibitors who helped to make this a great show to kick off the show season for KPHA! Taking Your Paint Horse on the Trails Kansas is a great place for equestrians to get out with their equine partners and enjoy some great scenery and fresh air. KPHA is planning a fall ride at Kanopolis State Park for either the last weekend in September or first weekend in October. Plans include arrival Saturday morning, ride Saturday afternoon, potluck dinner Saturday night, potluck breakfast Sunday morning with a ride after breakfast, and travel home Sunday afternoon. Kanopolis offers 27+ miles of trails, 10 pads without facilities, 17 electric sites, 13 electric/water sites, two sets of 4 adjoining 20 20 pens, 10 15 20 pens, 3 wash bays, tie posts at each site, water at corrals, group shelter house with water, and modern shower house. There are many horse friendly parks in Kansas with over 300 miles of trails, many of which have facilities to keep your horse and have camping facilities. -Banner Creek Reservoir Holton, Jackson County 9 miles of trail on north side of lake. (Expansion planned to double mileage.) Banner Creek is about 30 miles north of Topeka, just west of Hwy. 75. -Big Hill Lake Labette County in SE Kansas 17-mile trail surrounds three-fourths of the lake providing a variety of terrain for all ages. -Cedar Bluff Lake SW of Hays, Trego County With advance planning, group rides are allowed by special permit. -Cimarron National Grassland Elkhart, Morton Co. in SW Kansas The 19-mile Companion Trail parallels the Santa Fe National Historic Trail, and begins at Conestoga Trailhead and ends at Murphy Trailhead. -Clinton Lake Lawrence, Douglas Co. in NE Kansas Approximate 35-mile trail system which runs along south shore of Clinton Lake. -Eisenhower State Park, Melvern Lake (Crooked Knee Trails) Osage County, approximately 40 miles south of Topeka just west of Hwy 75 (10 miles north of I-35). Approximately 20 miles of trails on north side of lake. -El Dorado Lake (Boulder Bluff Horse Trail) SC Butler County, NE of Wichita just off I-35 The equestrian camping facility is located in the Boulder Bluff Area of El Dorado State Park just north and east of the city of El Dorado. -Fort Leavenworth Leavenworth Co. Fort Leavenworth Military Reservation is immediately north of Leavenworth in Leavenworth County. Eighteen-plus-mile trail system, within confines of Fort Leavenworth Military Reservation. Permission required. -Harvey County East Park located near Newton just off Hwy 50, 5 1/2 miles of trails. -Harvey County West Park located near Newton just off Hwy 50, 5.1 miles of trails. -Hillsdale Lake (Saddle Ridge Horse Trails) east central Kansas between Ottawa and Louisburg, near I-35 and Hwy 68, Miami Co. Marysville equestrian area on east side of reservoir has 32+ miles of marked and unmarked trails available to horseback riders. -Johnson County Parks and Rec Riding Trails Heritage Park. Approximately 150 acres of riding in area leased to Mid-America Combined Training Association (MACTA). -Kanopolis Lake located approx 30 mi sw of Salina near I-70 and I-135, Ellsworth Co. Kanopolis offers 27+ miles of trails open to hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders.

-LaCygne Lake -extreme east central Kansas south of Louisburg on Hwy 69, Linn County Park Approximately 30 miles of equestrian trails; wooded areas, lakeshore, creek crossings in SE Linn County. -Melvern Lake see Eisenhower State Park -Milford Lake near Junction City and I-70, Riley Co. Eagle Ridge Equestrian Trail, Milford State Park, located on southeast end of Milford Lake. Approximately 10 miles of horseback riding on some of the most scenic and diverse areas that Milford Lake has to offer. -Perry Lake Jefferson County, just northeast of Topeka near I-70 and Hwy 24. Wild Horse Camp, Perry State Park. -Pomona Lake (Black Hawk Horse Trails) south of Topeka and east of Hwy 75, Osage County. Black Hawk Trail begins in 110-Mile Park on northeast side of Pomona Lake, NE Osage County. -John Redmond Reservoir (Hickory Creek Trail) Coffey Co., 3 miles north of Burlington on Hwy. 75. -Sand Hills State Park Reno Co. North of Hutchinson on Hwy 61; east on 56th or 69th to trailheads. Fifteen miles of multi-use trails, 6 trailheads. -Lake Scott State Park west central Kansas, Lake Scott State Park is located west of Hwy 83, between Oakley and Scott City on K95, Scott County. -Tuttle Creek Lake (Randolph & Carnahan Trails) north of Manhattan and I-70, Riley/Pottawatomie Counties Randolph State Park: Almost 15 miles multi-use trail with 2 trailheads. -Wichita Pawnee Prairie Park in SW Sedgwick County Five-mile bridle trail. Located west of Airport and south of Kellogg. -Wyandotte County Lake Kansas City, KS Day use only, no camping. Eight miles of trail around 300 acre lake through oak and hickory forest. -Kansas Rail Trail The Kanza Rail-Trails Conservancy has built or is building and maintaining the following trails which are open to equestrian use. Flint Hills Nature Trail about 117 miles from Osawatomie to Herington. Parking available at Rantoul, Vassar, and Council Grove. Landon Nature Trail about 38 miles between Topeka and Lomax (south of Pomona Lake). Parking area on 53rd Street, between Hwy 75 and SE Adams Street in Topeka.
