Brief history of was opened officially on the 9 August 2012 by HRH Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. St. Georges Park is situated on the former site of Needwood Forest and Hunting Lodge which dated back to the 13th century. Various monarchs including Edward IV and King James I were known to have used the hunting lodge. Byrkley Park and Lodge were later built in the 19th Century by the Bass Family. William Bass died in 1952 and the estate was sold that year, with the lodge being demolished and interior fittings exported to America. Forte purchased the land in 1992 and obtained permission for two golf courses and a hotel, but was later resold to The Football Association in 2001. The St. Georges Park project began in 2008, with the build itself taking just 74 weeks. The site includes one of the last remaining stands of Wellingtonia trees, planted 170 years ago in 1852 to commemorate the death of the Duke of Wellington. 3
