Summary This report summarises broadcast media coverage and internet coverage* of ten different science stories between 1 April 213 and 31 March 21. The ten stories were nominated by the, and are: > Climate change pause the slowdown in rising temperatures (labelled as Climate Change Pause throughout this report); > Epigenetics; > Physics the LUX dark matter experiment, or the discovery gravitational waves in the Antarctic ( Gravitational Waves ); > DSM-V fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (published May 213; DSM-5 ) > Synthetic biology; > GMOs for better, more nutritious food > Big data; > Aquaculture development of sustainable fish-free prawn food ( Sustainable Prawn Food ); > Brain and mind projects; and > Solar and wind power storage. This report also breaks the coverage down into and non-. > Please note that the duration of coverage includes the entire length of each segment in which the topics were mentioned. This does not necessarily reflect the duration devoted to discussing these topics. Qualitative analysis could identify this more precisely. > The devoted more time and reports to every topic apart from climate change pause and epigenetics. However, epigenetics was rarely discussed. > The leading topic by volume of reports was solar and wind power storage, followed by big data and DSM-V. > The total duration of segments in which DSM-V was mentioned was greater than that of any other topic. It was also mentioned in the most internet reports (16). > The leading station to report on all topics (by volume) was 72 Sydney. However, the leading station by duration was Radio National. This issue was also widely discussed on 5AA Adelaide. On Mornings on 72 Perth, Geoff Hutchison discussed the overwhelming demand for solar power in regional WA, resulting in the banning of new installations in towns such as Carnarvon. This was a preview of the Four Corners episode that night about the data trail of an average Australian family. However, the Mornings program on 612 Brisbane, hosted by Steve Austin, featured the most extensive discussion of big data (by duration). This was largely due to a regular segment on this program, called The Hidden Persuaders Panel, which featured panellists from the communications industry. Big data was a common topic during this segment, mostly due to the impact it may have on marketing and communications. Coverage peaked in May 213, when the new edition was released. No topic was discussed in more reports on stations in a single month than DSM-V in May 213. Radio National broadcast the most extensive coverage by duration, and the third highest volume of reports (seven reports with a total duration of just over one hour and 38 minutes). Unusually, no coverage on Radio National was broadcast in May 213. All coverage on the Big Ideas program on this station (which contributed almost one hour of total coverage) aired in December 213. This was due to an extensive interview with psychotherapist Dr Gary Greenberg, who had recently released a book which argued that the DSM was contributing to an over-diagnosis and over-treatment of conditions such as bipolar disorder. In contrast, 1 of the 13 reports on 1 the leading station by volume and all coverage on 77 Melbourne, the second leading station by volume of reports, was broadcast in May 213. 1 coverage was predominantly limited to brief news items, apart from an interview with Professor Patrick McGorry in July on One Plus One about the definition of psychosis in DSM-V, and another interview with Dr Gary Greenberg about his book on The Drum in October 213. Coverage on Afternoons on 77 Melbourne included an interview Nick Haslam, Professor of Psychology at the University of Melbourne, and David Castle, Chair of Psychiatry at St Vincent s Health. Various scientists were interviewed on this station, including Charlie Teo, who discussed the need for more funding to research cancer in Australia. This issue was rarely discussed in great detail, with mostly brief mentions about Barack Obama s announcement of $1 million in funding for research to map the brain. As the research project was only in its infancy, little coverage looked at this subject in great depth.
