COLORED CONCRETE ENERGIZED BY Case Study Daum Kakao Space.1, Jeju Island, South Korea COLORED CONCRETE WORKS An initiative of LANXESS
DATA HIGHWAY TAKES SHAPE. A futuristic form of Nature. Virtuality has seldom found such structural expression as in the case of Daum Kakao Space.1, where the concept of a Data Highway has been applied to architecture in a most spectacular way. Daum Kakao, one of South Korea s largest IT companies, has collaborated with Minsuk Cho, Korea s foremost architect, to draw up a master plan. This creative complex has already established an impressive platform that is destined to grow in the future. The design embodies Daum Kakao s special corporate culture, but also reflects the unique landscape around the building on Jeju Island. To implement the project, the decision-makers deliberately departed from otherwise typical urban trends by selecting this hitherto undeveloped location in the remote Jeju Province. Another objective was to create a working environment inspired by the surrounding mountains, sea and caves. The design has had a creative and motivating effect on the company s first 350 employees who already have moved into their new offices in Daum Kakao Space.1. 2 LANXESS INORGANIC PIGMENTS Daum Kakao Space.1

ALONG THE HORIZON. The structure remains true to its natural environment even on the inside thanks to colored concrete and plenty of light. IN THE DESIGN PROCESS, WE WERE GUIDED BY THE VISION OF A STRUCTURE THAT REFLECTED ITS SURROUNDINGS. Minsuk Cho Daum Kakao Space.1, the first model. Minsuk Cho was born in Seoul, South Korea, where he also earned a degree in architectural engineering from Yonsei University. He subsequently received a master s degree in architecture from Columbia University in New York, United States, before launching his impressive career. Cho s first professional work was with the Kolatan/Mac Donald Studio and Polshek and Partner in New York. Thereafter he moved to the Netherlands, where he worked for OMA. After numerous other positions, he returned in 2003 to Korea and established his own architectural firm, Mass Studies. The winner of over 20 awards, Minsuk Cho gained international prominence after designing the Korea Pavilion for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. 4 LANXESS INORGANIC PIGMENTS Daum Kakao Space.1
Reinventing creative structures. The creators of Daum Kakao Space.1 decided in favor of the rustic exile of an island for reasons other than the stimulating influence of the natural environment. In fact, Minsuk Cho and his team of architects from Mass Studies were guided by something entirely different, namely the vision of using the vastness of the area to visualize the IT giant s modern and flat organization in the architectural features of the complex. Whereas business success is often expressed in the number of floors reaching into the sky, Daum Kakao Space.1 attempts to structurally reflect the com pany s horizontal organization. The 132,000 square meters of horizontal space symbolizes a kind of super highway. An architectural superstructure divides the site into a rural and an urban area: a statement, both symbolic and literal. And a story of tomorrow s working world come to life. Surprising what a warm appearance concrete can create, while simultaneously replacing complex facade designs. LANXESS INORGANIC PIGMENTS Daum Kakao Space.1 5
EARTHY SHAPE AND COLOR. Concrete as organic as volcanic rock. To implement his visionary design, Minsuk Cho selected a material and color that were an authentic rendering of the island s typical features. After an intense search, he decided on concrete colored with Bayferrox pigments to mimic the island s volcanic rock. No other building material could better form a link to the region s geological formations. Mass Studies had the pigments for the outer shell of Daum Kakao Space.1 custom mixed to specifications by local experts Wooshin Pigment Co, Ltd. and then delivered to the island. Specifically, it was Bayferrox 318, Bayferrox 920 and Bayferrox 4130 that were used in the formulation. The resulting mixed color tone was a perfect match of Jeju Island s typical volcanic rock. Integrally colored concrete also proved to be an excellent building material for the project because it supports creative geometries and characteristic surface textures. And not least, the image of the project as an organic design also benefits from the eco-friendly properties of this building material. A shining example of variety: the inside of Daum Kakao Space.1. 6 LANXESS INORGANIC PIGMENTS Daum Kakao Space.1
